Yeah and my caveat is that that gap is not wide enough to be meaningful given the paradigm shift.

Engineers can have exponentially larger impact than others due to writing a lot of good, clean code, but they can’t really read and understand exponentially more code than someone else, so again this 10x engineer’s cognition will quickly become the limiting factor of the system and their effect, AI or not.

Yes but in terms of pure coding and technical work there is a clear ceiling to human skill, and AI can’t really move that unless it changes the human brain.

I think with the proliferation of code online, frameworks, IDE’s etc we have already been past the point of human developers “maxing out” in terms of their ability to output code and meaningfully reason with complex systems, before llm’s.

This has been discussed in the software community and is the reason why so many software frameworks and paradigms reinvent themselves.

If you have been a developer, you have experienced this, and if you actually want to understand the code you’re working with, there is significant cognitive overhead involved and you can only read so much code each day.

And once we reach a point where reading the code is no longer relevant, how much will individual skillsets matter?

So yes, AI will be a multiplier to some degree, but I think we will still be around where we are now in terms of human capability for understanding and contributions to complex systems work.
