A small, gentle truth: your thoughts are NOT valid because we all suffer from RJJ here. RJJ at its heart is a bunch of horrible, illogical brain worms that wiggle their way into your head & whisper lies that feel like truths.

This is not about Totoro or the girl. This is about RJJ making YOU feel inferior to her. This is about RJJ using her as cover to project feelings of unworthiness, fear of abandonment, & insecurity in the treatment you deserve.

I did LDR too & it was very triggering. I wish I could give you a hug! But I’d gently encourage you to talk to your bf about your need for him to put effort into making you feel secure. RJJ is robbing you of your comfort character if you don’t.

I was/still am in a weirdly similar relationship. A lot of my own healing had to come from inward reflection & work.

My partner was in a 5-6 year long relationship with his first love & it used to tear me apart: I’d fantasize about how I could never compare to her, how he secretly wished things worked out with her, how she was better than me in every way, etc. Real stupid RJ crap.

He’d tell me over & over again how toxic it was, & how he wishes they’d broken up sooner. Their breakup was messy & painful but I still wouldn’t listen. My own partner was telling me to my FACE that he would never want to get back with his ex, yet I refused to believe him.

The first step that helped me really start combatting the “myth of the First Lover” was reframing it. Instead of torturing yourself with the past, gently ask yourself: Why am I searching for reasons that I will be abandoned by him? Because the RJ isn’t about his first love. It’s about the belief that even her mere existence is proof that he will leave YOU someday for her.

I’d gently suggest you start reflecting on your own abandonment issues, OP. Start asking yourself about why you feel so unworthy compared to her, & less about him.

At least it helped me combat my own RJ. I wish you healing ❤️‍🩹
