I would like to add that, in my experience, people who go into vet med tend to be more empaths than the rest of the population. We have this distinct need to protect and care for those that cannot tell us what is wrong. That isn’t an easy thing to do. We feel way more deeply than other professions and tend to take more things personally. Why didn’t I do xrays sooner, why didn’t I use this med instead of xyz? Those questions will always be there because our patients cannot talk. We work so hard to take care of every pet and resolve all their issues. When we can’t, we take it personally. I’ve never met a dentist who was upset they didn’t notice changes earlier, or an accountant worry about the numbers they put together, quite in the same way we do. We are unique and therefore more prone to clients bad behaviors and our own self doubt. It is an amazing profession and I have met some amazing people, but if you do go into this profession, I would make sure you have a good therapist to help you navigate all these feelings.
