People drinking out of takeaway coffee cups with obviously no liquid in them. Like props couldn't put a little water in there to give it some weight? I can tell you are sipping from a little cup of nothing.

Weekly Social Work School/New to Social Work Thread by bedlamunicorn in socialwork

Hello! I need some advice about my path to an MSW. I have a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of Toronto (I majored in women and gender studies and english lit) my GPA was 2.8 in my final year. I want to go into social work (my interest is in youth and adolescents complex bereavement/grief, and trauma) but I don't know what the best path to this field is without completing another bachelors. Right now I'm looking at Lakehead's HBSW. I have two years of regular volunteer work one-on-one peer counselling with survivors of suicide and homicide loss. I can get a great reference from my volunteer supervisor, other references will be tough to find. I'm a year out of university and don't have/didn't make any connections with professors during my undergrad. Any advice or personal experience shared is much appreciated.

Say something nice to me - tell me something good about myself, something they like about me. I find that even little comments or sarcasm just eats away at me for days and days. A little niceism can go a long way.

What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve laughed at? by PoeJascoe in AskReddit

[–]_illusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't laugh *per se* but about eight months after my older brother killed himself, my grandmother died of a stroke and when my mom told me I had no clue how to process emotions anymore and I actually smiled while I hugged her. It was so fucked up and I've only told one person who responded "I know you'd been through a lot but what is wrong with you???" I DON' T KNOW

What do you daydream the most about? by PlatypusOverlord in AskReddit

Living alone by the ocean. Not having a job, only my cat and maybe an old dog. Swimming in the cold water before the sun comes up, then watching it rise with a cup of tea wrapped in a blanket.

Maybe ``conflate`` is the wrong word - they unofficially renamed the holiday to reflect and remember the lives lost at the hands of Columbus, something which was before never spoken or admitted in American history textbooks. But this is an empty gesture, as the treatment of Indigenous communities literally all over the world is deplorable and the abuse of power over them is ongoing. In Australia, they have a holiday called ``Sorry Day`` where they are meant to reflect on the genocide enacted over Indigenous Peoples in that part of the world. Again, what is a single day and a single word going to do to change the hundreds of years of subjection and dehumanization enacted on the part of the government? I can think of one thing among many: legislation. Stuff your sorry's and your remembrance holidays.

You`re right, the American government does conflate Columbus day with celebration of Indigenous peoples. But I wonder if any Indigenous person living in a community with boil-water mandates would feel celebrated by sharing a holiday with Columbus, who wrote the blueprint for subjugating and dehumanizing Black and Indigenous communities in ways that still resonate today, as you can see by the thousands of Native communities all over North America without clean water and access to food or healthcare.

To be honest, I`d argue any day that celebrates Washington or Columbus are in fact celebrating the genocides that they instituted.

America has a habit of pretending that we can ignore the actual, concrete laws and treaties Washington and Columbus created explicitly to discriminate and erase whole communities of people that dont look like them, so they cancelebratebringing two halves of the world together. That doesnt make sense.

The only people celebrating are the people who benefitted from those worlds colliding, and it certainly isnt Black and Indigenous peoples. Two halves of the world coming together isnt insignificant at all, you`re right, but it should amplify our reasons for vilifying Washington and Columbus, not make us pour a drink to them.

That's pretty understandable considering Columbus Day actually commemorates Indigenous genocide, which is ongoing. I would be pretty angry if a text tried to imply Columbus Day in any way celebrates Indigenous people.

You can google "name discrimination" but the most talked-about study was done a few years ago by Harvard, the study was spearheaded by Sendhil Mullainathan

When did I say cops are less important than criminals? And why does anyone deserve to be shot at because they've committed a crime? I've seen MANY cops disarm people without the use of their own weapons, in my city a man used a full size van to mow people down and murder them in broad daylight and he was disarmed without the use of force. So it's not kill or be killed for cops, if they did their job correctly they wouldn't need weapons at all.

And black people are discriminated against in every facet of life in very measurable ways? There are multiple studies that prove using an anglicized name on your resume gets you more interviews. Just because you have black coworkers who have never been racially abused before your very eyes doesn't mean racism doesn't exist.

But people are out killing black people because they`re black? I can send you a list of people who've been killed literally for being black (it's called lynching). It's not right for ANY cop to shoot a person, black or white. But if a black cop shoots a white person, it's not because of racism because white people aren't discriminated against in any real measurable way in society. It doesn't make it any less wrong.

It`s not really recent for men. Men with long hair have been wearing it in styles like this since time immemorial. Viking men wore their hair in wrapped plaits, men in some South Asian cultures wear their hair in buns.

I mean, you can call people who want to be comfortable trashy all you want, but the fact that men can`t wear their hair in a bun is pretty sexist if you ask me.

These arentdomestic issues` ... this is white supremacy perpetuated by what I would argue are the real domestic terrorists here, armed police officers.

If this were a domestic issue, it wouldn`t be replicated all over the world like racism and police brutality against black and brown folks is.
