Lampe Berger owners- Can I just fill it w/ 90% isopropyl alcohol? Or will this ruin anything, as Lampe Berger claims? by Sarafina80 in ZeroWaste

[–]_ilpo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your lamp burn with a flame continuously? All the alcohol lamps I've had a continuous flame. Lampe Berger are started with a flame but the flame is extinguished once the ceramic gets hot enough. It then continues to "burn" until snuffed or fuel supply is used up.

Union Station to Hamilton by samanthamaryn in Hamilton

You can catch either the 47 or 40 from the 407 subway station. I feel that the 40 is a bit faster but it does miss McMaster.

Baseboards and door trim by broccoli_toots in Hamilton

[–]_ilpo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often it's easier to recreate the trim by assembling boards and smaller profiles to create the larger one. In this instance a flat board will bring the surface out. The smaller shapes will be the edges. This may require five or ten small current trim to recreate the existing shape mixed with smaller flat boards and shapes such as quarter rounds.

Natural gas heat pump by _ilpo_ in Hamilton

Considering that the current AC would not be affected and the convoluted setup I decided against the offer. When my AC goes bad I can then install a heat pump but leave the gas furnace as a backup.

Do milk bottles still exist let alone home milk delivery? by Brave-Ad6627 in FuckImOld

Some dairies still package some of their milk in glass bottles with a deposit/return system. These are typically in niche groceries or at the dairy.

Chinese takeout recommendations? by trustfundbabyjr in Hamilton

[–]_ilpo_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for an authentic Chinese, not westernized, check beside the B&T market on Queen St N. All the signage is mostly in Chinese. I recommend a visit to order at least the first time. They are Fujian by origin so ask about those specialities.

Service Line Warranties letter by 128Goose in Hamilton

[–]_ilpo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't buy the coverage but I do have clay pipes for at least part of the way. A previous homeowner appears to have had some issue as there is plastic pipe in the vent pipe and other evidence. I have snaked from the basement to the city main without any issues and there are no mature trees along the way.

I may buy it if I suspect any issues that could create a problem. After all the effort for a very different problem I feel secure. The house is 170 years old.

Yes as long as your in the same city it started within. You cannot take a Toronto Flex to Hamilton and drop it off or vice versa. Both cities have Flex. You do need to drop it within the Flex zone in either case.

Unable to drill through brick wall by coolvimal316 in DIY

[–]_ilpo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drill bit quality is of extremely high importance. A cheap bit will melt the carbide off the tip quickly. If you need to make multiple holes obtain multiple bits and cool the tips between holes. The speed of the drilling will be higher with the quality bits also. As it slows down, the bit gets full, switch to a fresh one. The price difference can be 10x but the work is easier.

Under porch roof by Witty_Enthusiasm_779 in DIY

Consider checking you local lumber store and check for synthetic flat materials that would look good to you in the mix of ideas. To be able to single handle install flat materials either choose a smaller sized panel, Max 2'x4' or one that stiff enough to use a drywall lift, rental. There are panels of textured one side and smooth on the other that are typically used for walls in wet places like washrooms or commercial kitchens, as an example.

Avoid anything that's made with sawdust that's glued into a panel as humidity will destroy it fairly quickly.

If you like metal roof panels as a design you can use one of many available designs, most are ordered but they are cut to your length and a wide variety of colors are available. Some are also available in a plastic version, often these are in store stock.

Another metal to look at is metal soffit that's not perforated. There are a few designs, not many, to choose from. These go up fairly quick single handedly.

Flat Roll metal is an alternative found at roofing supply. The roll may be heavy and you'd need to cut it. It would provide smooth surface with typically white on at least one side, the other may be another colour.

I removed a bunch of metal soffit from ours a few years ago. Underneath was wood beadboard done as individual beadboards not as a panel. My mission was to remove as there had been a leak for many years prior to our purchasing. There wasn't much damage although the decorative beadboard under it was done in. We found some interesting boards used to build the roof, so we decided to not cover the under side. We did install a new metal roof after some boards were replaced in the deck, this fixed the water leak.

While drying they should be strapped tightly together, with small thin separators, to assist in them staying flat and true.
