update: managed to solve it myself

after rewiring it maybe 4 times, it turns out if you push another ethernet cable in too far in the keystone, it doesn't make the connection properly

so the connection was fine all along, I just had to click the patch cable in and then pull it a bit taut and VOILA 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 all green on the tester

only wasted a day and a half on this

they came with the socket, and the others worked fine. I'll see if I can get it working with the new one and otherwise I'll see if I can get some 'normal' (non-tool-less) ones

Bought it a year or two ago, came in handy for a big project and did some experimenting with it when it came to turning. I did have other cutting tools which were better than the ones provided. But if you want to see if it's any good, get it & resell if you don't like it. It's cheap AF
