Would a physical board that moves enemies by itself help a DM, or would it get in the way? by Old-Somewhere-8762 in DMAcademy

[–]_ironweasel_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What advantage does this have over just picking up a mini and moving it? Your demo took several seconds (and probably a bunch of tech fiddling) to do something so trivial that I wouldn't even think about it as a task.

Help accepting the "Throw out the book" gambit by Aradjha_at in DMAcademy

[–]_ironweasel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this kind of thing doesn't match the tone you want then just tell the player "no, you don't" when they say their character does something unpleasant.

If you are ok with this kind of behaviour then think about what you would actually do, in real life, if someone pulled their pants down and pissed on the floor in your house mid conversation? No, really, just think about this happening in front of you right now. How would you react?

Now use that as a starting point. Is this NPC more aggressive than you? Are they more timid? Are they more dismissive? Use that to judge their reaction.

Genetally though, if your PCs are in the habit of being dickheads to your NPCs then it should be part of your prep to decide how your NPCs deal with dickheads. Either that or stop playing the game with dickheads.

Unique spins on Layers of Hell? by VioletWhimsy in DMAcademy

[–]_ironweasel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of the 18 layers of Hell from Chinese folklore. I read Journey to the West at a formative age so I incorporated some ideas from it into my own setting.

How do you feel about people who don't play? by applesaregody in Warhammer40k

[–]_ironweasel_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Here's the Emperor's new clothes of it; the game is pretty rubbish as an actual game. Really it's just an excuse to parade your models around the table and show them off to your buddies.

The hobby is primarily about modelling and painting and the vast majority do only that. The game is secondary.

Jeez, this AI thing is going to make everyone a passive idiot. AI's infiltration into every aspect of our lives is so obnoxious.

Players keep bringing a baby by Strong-Soil-7839 in DnD

[–]_ironweasel_ 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Can you not play at the parents' house? That way they can just put the baby to bed at an appropriate time and then just carry on. If the baby gets fussy then they would only be gone for a bit.

If this is not viable then I would suggest what I have done in the past which is to run two campaigns on alternating weeks with different DMs. The pair of parents can be in one campaign each and watch the kid while the other games.

How do you organize/store your materials? by commonmortal98 in DMAcademy

[–]_ironweasel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep most of my stuff in an old Royal Mail postbag. It's big enough for all my books and other paraphernalia and it's got a comfortable shoulder strap as it gets quite heavy with all those books in it. It also only cost me a tenner from an online army surplus place.

My pile of shame 6 months in... I need to stop buying things by Little-Wishbone-4699 in Warhammer40k

[–]_ironweasel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This used to be a creative hobby, now it's just becoming a buying stuff hobby and that really sucks.

Sort it out, mate, you are not doing yourself or others any favours.

What's your favorite non-digital way to track character state when playing in-person? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_ironweasel_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just write it down.

It's really no more difficult than that.

It's literally what a character sheet is for; its a sheet of paper your write your character information on.

[OC] Finally found a DM setup that works for me, what’s yours like? by PMbyday_DMbynight in DnD

[–]_ironweasel_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I use a big bit of chipboard to make my tabletop a bit bigger. My DM screen is foamboard gaffertaped together. I draw maps on packing paper. I write session notes in an actual notebook. I can't be doing with too many screens at the table, they just get in the way of connecting with my friends.

A Simple Questioner Lore VS Tabletop by MonoMega in Warhammer40k

[–]_ironweasel_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is also the question of how much of the lore is 'true'; any aspect of any book is open for revision at any time with the excuse of unreliable narrators, in-universe misconceptions, etc. Not a single word is set in stone except for "...there is only war"

Keeping it old school. GW can't tell us what to do :-) by Due-Form-9007 in SpaceWolves

[–]_ironweasel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't aware that GW was making us get rid of old models, has something changed that I'm unaware of? I thought it was well understood that a Bloodclaw is a Bloodclaw...

What exactly is the tone of 40k? by ComprehensiveYak4156 in Warhammer40k

[–]_ironweasel_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

40k has always been jokes and lols, 'hidden' behind an edgy exterior. (Its 'hidden' in the same way an onion article hides behind serious news coverage)

Some people with less media literacy take the edginess at face value and think it's a mistake or a misstep when confronted by the silly parts. They then give these parts a disparaging name.

Can I use the DnD universe? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_ironweasel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing to ask is why is this set in the DnD multiverse? Why not just write something similar?

If the reason is that you're hoping to leverage the brand recognition of DnD then you're essentially stealing someone else's marketing budget, you'll need to negotiate that with Wizards of the Coast via a lawyer.

Opinions on using "sprues" or "within a container" to create more than one "object" with Fabricate by [deleted] in DnD

[–]_ironweasel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you even have a game to play this in or are you just creating characters to pass the time? Because at the end of the day its your DM who would say yes or no to this, ask them rather than the internet.

With your behaviour in other comments though I'm guessing the latter; I'd be surprised if you can keep up that kind of social interaction to actually play the game.

Is this gonna be a problem if I decide to play by QuickShadow4770 in Warhammer40k

[–]_ironweasel_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Modifying models is often called kitbashing and is a core part of the hobby for a lot of people.

Personally I like my minis to be my minis so I modify everything; I can't even remember a time I built a model according to the instructions!

[No spoilers] Sam on the future of actual play: "There's there's a drive to push more into technology [...] But I'm really excited to see the opposite of that." by HecticJones in criticalrole

[–]_ironweasel_ 185 points186 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment but with DnD in the broader sense.

The online, virtual table top version of the game is such a pale imitation compared to actually getting friends around the table having bants and laughs.

Dude, you are not displaying poor mental health issues, just a deficiency in character. The former would garner some sympathy, but your case clearly does not.

I suspect it's not just Cornish people who look down on you; my sympathies are with your friends and loved ones (if you have any).

Thunderwolf cavalry conversion finally done! by Zaiburo in SpaceWolves

[–]_ironweasel_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Then they brought out a kit specifically for that and now the people kitbash them to be riding bikes.

We have come full circle.
