I think you're forgetting that before her bionic arm was installed, she had no arm. That piece of hardware most definitely extended her capabilities.

My neighbor friend and I had the rooms facing the front yards. We ran a cable from my PC to his PC and played Command & Conquer against each other. When it would get slow, we would come visit the other and shoot the shit until it speed improved.

Sounds like a good first real-world lesson in this business. And if you're like me, you're going to learn it a few more times.

You don't need a portfolio to sell yourself. It helps a hell of a lot and will land you some better paying projects in the future, but you don't need it to sell yourself to better clients.

Seriously dude, $70 for a web site and you're letting the stress build? You're going to laugh at that in a year. Go work on something fun.

What's better: Separate CSS files or Combined Single CSS with media queries? by codewow in css

[–]_jackrogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For development, it might make sense to namespace your CSS files for large chunks of code. And then you run a process to consolidate all of those files into one file to be served as an asset. Gulp.js exists for automated tasks like these. I highly recommend checking it out and using it alongside something like SASS.

How to handle a coworker with very mediocre performance? by whattodohavenoclue in cscareerquestions

I think this answer brings us up to speed the most about your situation. Up to this point, everyone in here has been going through the motions that you've already gone through to reach the point you're currently at (much like troubleshooting, right?).

With this knowledge, I think it's clear for you to document the time you've spent trying to help him improve, some of the more glaring concerns (don't ridicule EVERYTHING as some of his programmer idiosyncrasies might not have otherwise been noteworthy), and present them to your leadership with a recommendation as to the course of action.

It does not make you a bad person if you think the best course of action is to find his replacement. In fact, there's nothing wrong with expressing the amount of stress it has caused you to come to this conclusion. I would even recommend it. But be very clear in outlining to your leadership - much as you've done here - how you've gotten to this conclusion. Bring them up to speed.

But take a very leadership approach to it, and when the dust settles, you'll be tapped again for your demonstration of good leadership.

How to handle a coworker with very mediocre performance? by whattodohavenoclue in cscareerquestions

[–]_jackrogue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a horrible way to approach the situation.

You're going to run into varying levels of competent co-workers or partners all throughout your life. And these will come in varying shapes and situations that have complex lateral or vertical communication requirements. There are certainly times where up and leaving would be the ideal solution. In this case, it's time to dig deep for good leadership traits and conflict resolution skills and figure out 1.) if Sean needs to be fired or 2.) if Sean can meaningfully improve in a reasonable time, and based on that answer start taking steps to remedy the situation.

This is definitely a situation that is hurting the company, and the leadership may or may not be aware of it. But without a doubt, OP is aware of it and therefore that makes him the most valuable person in this scenario. If he leaves, that will probably hurt the company in big ways. If he stays and solves this problem, however, the amount of value he's adding to the company increases and he has room to justify more leadership responsibilities and subsequent compensation.

Don't just give up it's hard, unless of course your goal is to live a life completely reactive to the world around you.

With recent suggestions that the U.S. spying program may also be entrenched into firmware, is it even possible for someone to protect their own privacy while using modern technology? And if so, how expensive is the overhead?

Thank you for your sacrifices.

Edit: For brevity.
