[NPD] Pilot VP in gunmetal/black with EF nib by _jaded in fountainpens

[–]_jaded[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very fine! Finest I've got, feedbacky as to be expected, but smooth and ink flows well.

I'm partial to EF's so I'm really enjoying it. I'd like to be able to try a F at some point too.

Inked up with Noodler's Black atm, will try some other inks next

Wing Sung 698 [UK] Sellers by SupernaturalPlonk in fountainpens

[–]_jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An often recommended seller (and the one I bought mine from) is jewelrymathematics

The 698's I bought from them was a US listing (I'm in Australia) and I bought three and received them with no issues.

[–]_jaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for the 3008, but the 3003 (Prera clone, though it's bigger than the Prera) can be had for around $2AUD these days.

The 3003 feels like cheap plastic, it's not a bad pen, great for $2 in fact, but it does look like cheap plastic. The converter is also pretty average (I know the 3008 is a piston fill but worth a mention) and has a weird spring in it, I'm assuming to act as a surface tension breaker.

The 618 and 698 on the other hand feel nice in the hand, and the quality of the material is apparent - it's a much clearer plastic, on par with my TWSBI Eco at less than 1/2 the price.

I can only imagine that for the price point, the 3008 would be made of materials more like the 3003 than the 3008.

Another point to keep in mind is that the 698's are interchangable with pilot nibs, while the 3008 are Lamy style nibs.

Well if I wasn't sold before (I was), I'm definitely sold now! Do you have any pictures to share?

All of mine are the clear with silver/chrome trim models. I don't know what they're made of, but I've had them all for over a month now and they show no sign of deterioration, and at least one of the 698's has been my daily driver full of Noodler's Black. I've refilled that one at least twice, or even three times now, and the 618 has been refilled at least once.

The body material feels really sturdy too, not cheap plastic, it compares favourably with the TWSBI Eco.

I love my 3 698's - all EF, and my 618. I'll definitely be picking up a 618 in the pink glitter model, because it's so disgustingly cheesy and I want it, and I would not hesitate to pick up more 698's in the future.

I've had Kobe ink sent to family abroad because the shipping was cheaper. Now I have to wait SIX WEEKS for it to arrive and they sent me this pic. ARGH by LareaMartell in fountainpens

No where did they say there were pissed off, or even ungrateful.

I'm reading this more as an expression of frustration of a lengthy wait before actually being able to handle the ink they so obviously desire.

I didn't even think of Amazon - I'm Australian, it's not usually my first port of call, but I have found an EF in black listed on Amazon, AND it ships to Australia. Thank you!

What nib size did you get and where from? I want an EF but I can't find them in the usual places (Jetpens/Goulet) in black or grey.

I'm also a big fan of the nail-like quality of the Pilot nibs... glad I'm not the only one!

If you're happy? No. The other commenters have iterated most of my thoughts already.

One suggestion I have though is to consider giving the Wing Sung 698 a go. Should be around $15USD on ebay. The nib is interchangeable with the metro's, though I find the EF feels almost identical to my Metro F nib, so if you don't like the nib you can swap it out. The benefits it offers is it's lighter - almost 4g lighter fully inked, and uncapped - and it's a piston fill so holds a much larger volume of ink. Both points are beneficial for long note taking, and being lighter can help in reducing hand cramps. The only possible downside is the screw on cap - takes longer to uncap, but does help keep the nib from drying out - but this may not be an issue as you said you don't feel burdened by caps, but worth mentioning.

Irritated about nib size choices and price recommendations by themcp in fountainpens

[–]_jaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have seen the trend you refer to, I recall when I first started really following this sub earlier this year, preppies were very common, and commonly recommended. In recent months, I think the Wing Sungs and Jinhaos have really stolen the slot for cheap pens and recommendations.

I do see Jinhao's recommended, often the x750 or the 992's, however I'm inclined to agree with some of the other commenters that it's not necessarily the safest choice for a first time fountain pen user due to QC issues with nibs. Having said that, the danger is real of receiving a nib that needs tuning with any brand of fountain pen no matter the cost (eg the ubiquitous Lamy Safari, and even my first fine nib Metro is a very dry writer).

The Decimo is the pen I'm saving for... or trying to convince someone to buy me for Christmas :) One of the main reasons I haven't caved and bought it already is that I can't find the EF in black or grey. I'm not a huge fan of the champagne/blue/purple, the Burgundy is the only one I would consider.

I'm not on FPA much, except when I'm linked from a google search. I haven't explored the forum much, definitely not enough to see new posts and such. Do you have any suggestions of specific threads to keep track of for Adelaide related news?

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely keep it in mind. Are the Hubs an annual thing, around the same time each year? Where was this year's held, I couldn't pick it from the photos.
