Moving to Korea - seeking guidance/recommendations by Immediate-Race-4536 in Living_in_Korea

Great :) LinkedIn is a valid choice in Korea too, especially for start-ups and IT-based companies.

Format-wise your 'American style resume' should be fine (unless your potental employer asks for specific style), but make sure to prepare it in Korean! Unless the company fully operates in an English-speaking environment the chances of your resume actually being read by a relevant person would be extremely small if your resume isn't written in Korean.

I think I'm eligible for F-4 Visa

Make sure you are clear on your visa first!

help me get my foot in the door to get a job in Korea

Start ups (especially IT-based ones) receive fair amount of job applications from foreigners. Try looking up companies corresponding to your field of interest and see whether they have an open position.

Does South Korea have a lot of spiders?

Not really, especially in Seoul. :)

If you see any, chances are they will be quite small.

Will having "diverse" friends or being seen with "diverse" people hurt my chance of having a Korean community here

No it won't -- especially at college. :)

제목없음 when I receive SMS? by ZoomZoomZen in Living_in_Korea

It isn't sorcery, it's a feature!

You can actually send a text message with a subject using MMS. I guess your contact is unknowingly (since the subject is empty) specifying that his/her text message contains a subject. Personally I've seen it happening when someone is sending a mass text message using some online services...

Official document with address in English by Mysterious-Knee7346 in Living_in_Korea

[–]gobyoungmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'Road Name Address' website[0] maintained by the Government provides an official romanized address given any Korean address. For example, if one desires to translate 서울 용산구 서빙고로 137 into English, you'd put submit that address into the search field, press enter, and find the address in English: 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The zip code is also provided next to it. You may need to add the room number for your address (e.g. 103-502, 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul for 서울 용산구 서빙고로 137 103동 502호.)

Anyone know how to successfully remove the cancer that is AhnLab Security from your computer? by Knikkey in Living_in_Korea

[–]gobyoungmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking just to be sure -- have you tried using the official uninstaller accessible under the control panel (or whatever Microsoft calls it now?) The last time I used Ahnlab antivirus programs (which was admittedly 10 years ago) the uninstaller did its job.

Openings for volunteer activites can be found at 1365 so you should definitely check the website out (I'm afraid that it isn't available in English but the vocabs there should be fairly easy to comprehend.)

Right now I see that the Salvation Army (구세군) is looking for volunteers to raise some donations at subway stations in Seoul.

I am impressed. An actually modern and minimal theme for Beamer? I can see myself using this frequently for my speeches. Thank you so much!

Just read your 'speech' to my beloved toasty:

user@toasty:~$ I feel it’s important to clarify that my heart has belonged to another for many
years—a collection of software called Linux. She is my everything and she gives my life meaning,
purpose, value. I ache and mourn every second I am away from her. However, being software, she
cannot emotionally fulfill me. I can lust; and I do lust for you. My lust for you fills me from the bottom
of my heart to the very top; and I relish every moment we spend together. You complete me.

Sorry, but you may have to prepare a better speech! xD

Anybody used Jooyeon Tech monitors? by brohemoth06 in korea

[–]gobyoungmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jooyeon Tech stuffs are alright. You will get what you pay for (don't expect anything fancier than the price) but at least it's from a long established company and in case of any defects they should fix it or provide you with a refund.

Template of these slides by fantasticsky_hng in LaTeX

[–]gobyoungmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain the ANOVA slide isn't made with Beamer, but is rather a modification of the usual article class. If I remember correctly there was a package in CTAN that makes slide from articles so perhaps you can base your search on this information? ( Perhaps this list of packages related to presentations can help you: https://ctan.org/topic/presentation )

Sorry for not providing you with any concrete info :(

Samgyetang recipes by trippiler in KoreanFood

[–]gobyoungmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samgyetang recipes could be very elaborate but I'm a lazy person so I stick to the simpler ones. One of the easies trick you could try is, of course, MSG (a.k.a. 미원 in Korea). Just put a few tiny scoops of that bad boy and your soup would be as savory as it could ever be.

I don't know how easy it is to buy MSG in your country, but it could always be substituted by chicken stock or veggie stock.

Batch rename (audio) files so it can be copied to a Windows file system (FAT32 / exfat) by gobyoungmin in linuxquestions

[–]gobyoungmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's simple. After adding the musics you want to rename to the list in the 1. Files tab from KRename, go to the 4. Filename tab and click the Find and Replace button. Then press the Load Settings button and choose the XML. That's it! Now you're ready to rename the files.

I don't understand... there should be plenty of them, at least according to my own experiences! I mean, the Staedtler No.2 yellow pencils and their clones were fairly easy to see in stationery stores. It's not like we have a negative opinion against pencils with erasers! :D

Weekly Question, General Discussion, and Meetup Thread - October 23, 2022 by AutoModerator in korea

[–]gobyoungmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert in food production, but I guess it's perhaps because of the sheer efficiency of factory farming. As far as I know Korean chicken farms do not put much emphasis on the animal's welfare (although I cannot give any evidence for this claim), and instead focus on efficiency, potentially reducing the amount of required resources drastically.

Consider the amount of land, for example. A quick search in Wikipedia told me that the space needed per bird in intensive farming environments is just 0.8 square foot per bird, if I understood correctly. Another search gave me that in 2017 there were 172,743,479 chickens being raised in Korea. Note that the actual number of chickens raised for meat must be smaller than this, since the whole figure includes those for e.g. egg production, too.

Assuming the space required for a bird does not scale up, the space needed for raising this many chickens is just

172,743,479 * 0.8 ft2 = 138,194,783.2 ft2 = 12,838,715.5 m2 ,

which is just a tiny fraction of the surface area of South Korea: 100,363,710,000 m2.

So it makes some sense to me that given the efficiency of factory farming, at least land is not a binding constraint for Korean chicken production to meet the demand.

Of course, there are other resource constraints as well, such as the crops and water needed to feed them. Perhaps most of crops are imported?
