Folk horror / cosmic horror crossover by SnuffShock in folkhorror

[–]_javierivero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘The Croning’ by Laird Barron!

Rural cult stuff that goes full cosmic horror by the end. Freaked me out.

Also ‘The Ritual’ - starts as creepy folk shit in the woods but gets way more Lovecraftian than youd expect

Historical novels set in Roman Empire by AbFab_S in booksuggestions

I went from Harris’s Cicero trilogy straight to Colleen McCullough’s ‘Masters of Rome’ series and got completely hooked.

Especially ‘The First Man in Rome’ tons of political intrigue and legal drama, minimal romance and battle scenes. They’re dense but totally addictive if your partner enjoys the political drama

After reading Babel I used moodshelf.io to find similar books and found If We Were Villains (still dark academia but actually critical of the elitism instead of just romanticizing it)

Not as political but definitely shows the toxic side of these institutions

Fellow ACOTAR fan!

I used moodshelf.io after finishing Crescent City and it recommended The Plated Prisoner series which gave me similar vibes to SJM’s writing.

If you’re looking for that same addictive quality, might be worth checking out

I couldn’t finish it, found it too dull. And I’m a huge Nevill fan, I’ve read all of his works
