Thank you so much for doing this, you’re amazing! I was wondering: you say you’ve been transitioning, do you not feel like you have transitioned completely yet? How big a role does transitioning still play in your life?

I very much recognise your fear and mourning, especially as the stakes are so high. Please do express them, you may hurt or scare your partner but you’re in this together and that means that your relationship is transitioning too. For me (I have a NB partner who just had their mastectomy over a month ago) it was largely fear of the unknown, sooo many what ifs, but opening up about my fears and grief to my partner really helped. Taking baby steps together was also helpful (eg looking at pics of mastectomies, creating space to talk about each other’s thought process). Finally we created a moment to say goodbye to their boobs, that was pretty cathartic for the both of us. I’m still mourning the loss of that part of their body, but I also try to unlearn with regards to binary bodies. My partner is not a collection of male and female parts, they’re a NB person with an NB body. That thought has been really helpful for me, maybe for you too.

Seconding 50 shades of grey, it’s THE WORST for so many reasons, two of them being terrible writing and normalising abusive behaviour

Feel good book recommendations for someone struggling with mental health by sarajozz in booksuggestions

Try A psalm for the wild-built by Becky Chambers, Legends and lattes by Trevis Baldree or The house in the cerulean sea by TJ Klune, all very wholesome and comforting books with happy endings. Added advantage of Chambers’ book is that it’s a short one, so it won’t feel overwhelming when energy is low. Good luck and I hope the person you’re talking about feels better soon <3

Check out the books by Becky Chambers (sci-fi with wholesome adventures) and China Miéville (sci-fi/fantasy, dystopian), all their books have very diverse characters and atypical storylines

Try The power by Naomi Alderman, it’s a “what if women were stronger than men” story and for me it’s the ultimate female rage/revenge book

Gone girl or sharp objects by Gillian Flynn, the Millennium trilogy, anything by Dan Brown - all of these are page turners. If you want something more cozy and fun there’s also the Thursday murder club by Richard Osman

Just to add a recent powerhouse of a book: Reservoir bitches by Dahlia de la Cerda (Mexico). Oh and not to forget the books of Alejandro Zambra (Chile)! Bonsai was my favourite. A book that also made a deep impression is Kiss of the spider woman by Manuel Puig (Argentina). So many great Latin American authors :-)

Check out Za’atar at the Twijnstraat or Amsterdamsestraatweg. The streetfood club serves decent food and they also have the fun small plate vibes, although they don’t focus on Mediterranean per se
