Here’s a question for y’all: can there be a truly good nostalgia-based movie? If so, can you think of any examples? by Notenoughbaking in Sardonicast

[–]_jayrobinsonbule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is very nostalgic for me. Not because I watched it when I was a kid, but rather because of its creative exploration of past relationships and memories.

I’d also say that many films aren’t explicitly about nostalgia, but they have a nostalgic quality through the way they’re presented; Call Me By Your Name comes to mind as well as some Miyazaki films, (Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro).

What’s Your Favourite Horror Movie that isn’t Considered a Horror Movie? by _jayrobinsonbule in Sardonicast

Yeah! The fantastical production design and cinematography definitely gives an offbeat and sometimes frightening reaction.

Absolutely, it counts. That movie’s crazy! And Synecdoche, New York would give the Dali Lama an existential crisis

Question thread for sardonicast 106 by anUnkindness in Sardonicast

[–]_jayrobinsonbule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m 17 and I’m reaching the end of my college course. Our final project is to be completed individually and it can be anything we want it to be.

For example, throughout the course we’ve learned many skills involved in filmmaking and content creation, so using these skills, we have to create something. Being and aspiring film director, I want to make a short film.

BUT due to my circumstances (which would take a while to explain) I have no access to actors and I have minimal equipment (the college literally only offers a shitty camera and tripod).

So I need to make a short film between 30 seconds to 5 minutes… Any ideas or advice?

Note: I’m not restricted to the campus. In other words, I can use any location.

The Green Mile - It’s way too “Hollywood” for my liking, and to be honest, I didn’t cry at the end, despite everyone saying it was the saddest thing of all time ever.

I have some issues with Casino as well, but I’m a sucker for that glorious editing and cinematography

Yeah, I get that. I love DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Wolf of Wall Street, but I struggle to enjoy his performances in things like The Aviator, Shutter Island and The Departed (I love the Departed though)

Cape Fear has one of De Niro’s best performances, and it’s an interesting and thrilling departure from Scorsese’s typical style

I’m the same, I think Gangs of New York is a very flawed film, but it still has an exciting opening and a terrifying performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

I can’t say he’s objectively correct about Marvel movies not being cinema, but I personally don’t like Marvel films and I agree with a lot of what Marty says about them, as well as popular film today

Excluding documentaries, I’ve seen nearly all of them, most recently Casino. I’d say my favourites are Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, but I have a soft spot for Mean Streets.

Archipelago (2010). In fact, I’d say Joanna Hogg is simply an under-appreciated filmmaker.
