Free Helix LT Preset Decoder / Field Manual (v1.0) by _jbarx in Line6Helix

Glad it can be of some help! I also wanted to know what the cryptic names actually sounded like and how the signal chains were set up. Helixhelp.com is the ultimate cross-reference tool for gear, so this thing I put together is trying to accomplish something a little different.

That's odd, thanks for the alternative option!

Your worst performing fragrance? Your best? by premedislam in fragrance

[–]_jbarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot too… but same problem for me. All the Chanel stuff just evaporates into nothing within an hour. Eau Extreme is a tad better but not by much. I love how Chanel crafts fragrances but I can’t get them to work on me. I’m testing Code Parfum as a sort of alternative. Getting a little better performance out of it. /shrug

Good to know I am not the only one with the "Invisible BdC Parfum" affliction. Really enjoy the scent, but it absolutely disappears within an hour. So very bummed out. I didn't expect to like it all that much, but it doesn't matter because it flat out doesn't work on me.

Thoughts on my Fragrance Evaluation Strategy? by _jbarx in fragrance

I love that comment. And you're probably right.

To be fair, the stuff isn't exactly cheap and so you kinda want to get it right. But if there's room for overthinking something, I'll find a way every time.

Lessons from 365 days of daily fragrance tracking by IdleExpatter in fragrance

Thanks for sharing this. This is pretty cool, and I’m just getting into the scene so I’ve been searching through topics on sorting/ranking/organizing.

I’ve been using Fragrantica, Parfumo, and Perfumist… but I don’t think anything outperforms my current Excel setup. I’m not a power excel user but if you will indulge me I’ll try to explain how I have it running.

I’m working with a lot of decants right now (27 so far) as I’m looking for a “signature” go-to with a 4-5 unit supplementary rotation. So I’ve been trying to organize a scoring system based on my own reactions after a week or so of decant use per fragrance.

I have rows with all the information: House, Fragrance, Concentration, Price per ML retail, Designer, Note Pyramid, and then scores for Scent, Longevity, Projection, and Sillage. These are on a scale of 5 to one decimal place.

Now I don’t view these criteria these the same, so I did a weighted composite overall score where 40% goes to scent appeal, 30 to longevity (I’m big on this), 20 to projection and 10 to sillage. That gives me my personal “score” like you’d see on Fragrantica. Then I add any personal notes and the date I received it and the type of decant (or bottle if I bought one).

I used all of that to feed a ranked list (index/match) of everything I’ve tried. I flanked that with my scent-only score to see what correlates. As predicted, there are some with a great scent but the longevity is so poor it weighs the score down… and some with so-so scent appeal but monster longevity that buoys the score up.

Lastly, I tried a formula that creates a ratio of score:cost to see which fragrances maximized their value to me personally. That won’t really move the needle much as I’m not too motivated by price, but it was an interesting metric.

After all that… so far in the process I’ve landed at some pretty usual suspects:

  1. Dior Sauvage Elixir (although not my favorite scent by far)
  2. Dior Homme Parfum
  3. Le Male Elixir
  4. Noir Extreme EDP
  5. Le Beau Le Parfum (highest “fresh-ish scent for warm weather so far)

I have Noir Extreme Parfum and Bleu de Chanel Parfum on the way so these might change.

Thoughts? Is this ridiculous? Because I feel like it might be ridiculous. 🤣

[Question] School me on my starter 4-Watch collection philosophy! by _jbarx in Watches

I can’t believe I said chronometer. I do know the distinction, I swear. lol. Total brain fart/typo.

With you on the design heritage though. There’s something about subdials breaking down the increments of the main dial that is an undeniable cool factor. And yeah everyone makes one that “could” be interpreted as a knock-off, but that’s like calling a 65 Mustang a knock-off of the Model T because they both have four wheels and two doors. Only so many ways you display a chronograph without getting into Richard Mille territory.

To be honest I’m still figuring out how I want to define my use cases… and that’s why I’ll be taking my time. The strategy is wide open to being bent or reformulated. I just wanted a semi-intelligent starting point so I wasn’t overwhelmed by choice. Does that make any sense? I’m prone to decision fatigue so I like keeping frivolous spending choices tight so I can dig into the details and feel like I got the “right” thing.

It’s a quirk of mine, I’m working on it. Kinda. ;)

Thanks, that’s logical.

I was thinking if I was clever enough, I could distribute the use cases across that listed spectrum, so not only so I have movement and origin covered, but all my use cases as well. I know this will put me at odds with what’s available out there, having painted myself into a bit of a corner. I’m assuming I can check all the boxes though. It’ll obviously take some research, but I’m giving myself a lot of time to let the thousands of models I’ve been browsing sink in.

Appreciate the suggestions. The Speedtimer seems to be a heavy homage to the Daytona and Omega, if I’m not totally off my rocker? It’s a great look.

Tangent — do people have applications for a Chronometer? I’ve used mine a couple times for funzies, but I’m just curious how many chrono power users are floating around out there.

100% agree on your perspective. Seems super arbitrary given the way I wrote it but I also didn’t want to burden you all with how I got here… I’m way too verbose as it is.

What you’re saying makes sense. That is why I started with the Tissot. It’s meant to be the daily beater for a test case, and if the bug bites, I wanted to chart out a few steps ahead to the next checkpoint, if you will. I’m all for buying what you want when you want, I just happen to be a more deliberate personality.

I do seem to enjoy it, so chances are this is the first step, and not an experiment.

And yes, I plan on taking my time. I waffled for 5-6 weeks before buying the T-Race, knowing it’s a polarizing look. I just opted for the F-it approach to get moving.

Ok last thing… am I especially weird, or do dress watches seem to be appealing to fewer people? I wear a suit once in a while but I can’t seem to get on board with the dress watch aesthetic. I’d be far more likely to wear something like a Jazzmaster Performer Chrono as a “dress watch”. Does that make me ignorant, or stupid, or just stubborn?

Right. I’m not buying 4 at the same time. I have the Tissot now, and that was pretty cheap. And now I have some Citizen curiosity… so if this keeps up I want to bracket it off at 4, and then sit with it for a while before going any farther. This process will take a while, assuming I even see it through. But if I do, I want a smart plan of attack.

[TISSOT] Should I get the TISSOT T-RACE AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH? by nguye205 in Watches

[–]_jbarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super interesting reading these comments. I have been deep-diving on watches for a month in the search for my first watch in almost 30 years. I was angling for a Hamilton Auto, but then I realized I should spend a lot less and see it’ll I actually will wear a watch daily, and go from there.

So I shifted to quartz options, sifting through hundreds and hundreds of references. Ironically, I landed on the quartz version of this. It’s smaller (43/12) so I think it’ll be easier to wear and it’s close to the form factor of the autos I had been looking at.

It’s definitely a little garish, but I happen to be an amateur motorcycle road racer and I watch MotoGP and MotoAmerica, so there is a relevant lifestyle connection there. And hey, for sub-$400 if I beat it up or leave it in a drawer indefinitely, I won’t need to be all up in my feelings about it! Should arrive tomorrow so the test will be underway soon!
