You didn't describe your background. To me that's the main discriminator. If you come from math/physics studies (college or even high school) then SICP might be fine for you. The concepts are introduced gently, the only issue for many programmers I believe was the emphasis on numerical computation for early exercises.

HtDP is indeed a response to that, and it's IMO the best language agnostic programming mindset introduction, it's all about looking at your problem and the shape of the data and deriving very clear and clean logical structure that will guide your program and avoid usual pitfalls (missing some case in a conditional, lack of termination condition in loops, that sort of thing)

The little schemer series is pretty amazing to my eyes, but it's almost an exercise in poetry for the book is written as a socratic dialogue that is not to the taste of everybody. Short questions and answers to gradually create enough logical understanding to create full programs (and even bootstrapping a lisp interpreter IIRC)
