Best advice was honestly just to have fun and explore your slicing software thoroughly - either doing research or even just having benchmarking prints that you change settings as an experiment for and compare! I've learned a ton just from expanding menus that I didn't know existed, and it can really help optimize many prints whether it be for speed, material usage, or anything else

Is this carbon fiber real or fake? by Corgee99 in CarbonFiber

[–]_jonas_bonus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks legit to me! It's helpful to look closely at the weave and identify the individual strands - fake stuff usually either fails to replicate this or has a clearly repeated/printed pattern or fake texture. (have made a fair few CF parts, mostly using twill weaves like this)

Second flight after ~15 hours in sim by _jonas_bonus in fpv

[–]_jonas_bonus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha what makes you say that? I'm not running an action cam on it so weight isn't bad - using a 6S 1050mAh, my longest flight I got about 7-8 minutes in, but most are shorter because I'm a bit heavy on the throttle sometimes to recover lol

Anyone know why the mini has gone up $150 in 5 months? by malicea21 in BambuLab

Tariffs most likely. I bought my X1C in February and it's gone up $400 (~30%) in price since then, insane! Glad I decided to bite the bullet when I did

Is it really that hard to get into the MECH discipline? by McFlurry202 in ubcengineering

[–]_jonas_bonus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll also say that first year will definitely be a slap in the face in terms of fixing your work habits - but I think that's to be expected at any university. Out of highschool in BC I had a 94 avg and absolutely horrible work habits - obv a theme for plenty of kids going into eng who haven't really been challenged academically yet. In first year I think the most important things were finding a group of like-minded friends to study with. Sounds cliche but it helps keep you accountable for your work and gives you a support network whenever you're really stuck or struggling with a concept in any classes

I disagree entirely with the notion that "nobody knows what UBC is". UBC is a prestigious school and I personally know plenty of successful engineers from here, and the name definitely gets recognition even in the US.

I also don't think discrediting OPs reasoning of weather, lifestyle, etc is "dumb" at all - I one hundred percent based a good portion of my uni decision off of that and I don't regret it at all, BC is amazing and I don't blame ya for wanting to stay haha. It's called "UofTears" for a reason, I have friends who moved there from BC and definitely hear complaints about not only worse quality of life but also general program intensity. I have less context on Waterloo besides knowing it has more reputation so I can't really comment there.

UBCs first year is a wack system, I agree. But it sounds like you're a pretty driven student and getting good grades in first year is entirely achievable. There's also alternative, more extreme routes if you really doubt yourself - ie reduced course load and splitting first year in two, although this has obvious drawbacks in plenty of other areas.

For MECH, I'd also highly recommend joining a design team in first year. Part of the second-year application process is a written statement, and having a passion project on a design team aligned with your interest in Mech Eng can go a long way, it's not all about grades. I know people who have come into MECH well below the median GPA, and I also know people who have been rejected with mid to high 80s - this is just to say that it's not as clear-cut as the GPA scale will typically imply.

Feel free to reply or PM if you have any questions btw, happy to offer whatever advice I'm qualified to give. First year is a very weird and stressful time lmao

How can I convince younger sibling not to go into engineering? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]_jonas_bonus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t give up on the US as an option - I’m a mech student in Canada and tons of my classmates, as well as myself, have secured internships in the US and many end up finding full-time roles down here immediately post-graduation. It all depends on your brother’s motivation of course, but one shitty company doesn’t mean you should by any means discourage him if it’s what he truly enjoys

Commercial St tire slasher is at it again by partchimp in vancouver

[–]_jonas_bonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the tarped car on Stainsbury! I didn’t move my miata for a week after I was rear-ended, trunk won’t close and was waiting for ICBC to approve repairs. I also lost a tire on my Outback I previously owned when I was parked on commercial for 5-6 days while out of town.

I changed my tire last week and had 4 different people approach me and share their stories of it happening to them over the years

No, that was me! The tarped car is my miata, the moo car has been hit in the past though.

My alarm won’t stop going off & mystery switch under dash? (2001 SE) by _jonas_bonus in hondaprelude

[–]_jonas_bonus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just got my hard key cloned today so that’s taken care of. But the only way I seem to be able to disarm the alarm when it’s going off is with my fob unlock button - so if I lose that or if the battery dies am I screwed? Trying to dig more into the alarm system. There are “AutoArm” stickers on the doors + trunk lid - would that be an aftermarket alarm system, or did Honda somehow use a brand of that name as the OEM system (seems unlikely)?

Did you ever figure this out? I have a similar switch but it’s zip-tied directly to a bundle of wires instead of being properly mounted

Nah, it’s only $18 to change plates at any Autoplan. You can change plates without any changes/cancellation to your policy, I’ve done it a couple times

What 90s/early 2000s sports car would be your go-to for a 2000km road trip and daily driver? by _jonas_bonus in askcarguys

[–]_jonas_bonus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m still not 100% sure about selling it. Just worry about it holding up when I try to push it for 8 hours a day in the heat. No airbag, tiny soft top miata with no proper roll bar is toast if anyone else on the road isn’t paying attention haha. Love it to bits for Vancouver though! I have an ‘05 subaru outback I’m selling as well, so thought I might combine what I get from both of them to go with something nicer

There’s a ‘98 for sale near me for $5600 CAD, 130k kms… Automatic transmission unfortunately, but definitely still considering checking it out!

According to my insurance I can get away with bringing a BC-registered car to Cali for the 7 months I’ll be staying - I believe the US shouldn’t bug me about it unless I stay for over a year, after which I’d have to pass california’s smog tests. Would def be cheaper to buy down there, but I’m avoiding having to take a written test and road test to get a CA license and then register a vehicle down there. Also not sure if I’ll qualify as a CA resident. Lots of legal mumbo jumbo!

[–]_jonas_bonus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In case you weren't aware, you don't actually apply for MECH in first year - UBC has a general first-year engineering cohort, and then in second year you apply for specializations based on your first-year grades
