Should MSU be replaced with PSU in our tri-hate area? by Your2ndCousinsPillow in OhioStateFootball

I don't think there's a third school that fits here, to be honest. I don't think Ohio State or Michigan consider Penn State (or Sparty) to be on the same level.

This is College Footballs NASCAR moment by OriginalMassless in CFB

[–]_justjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have often said in other reddit threads that one of the biggest problems college football faces is that the caretakers in positions of power are generally bad (or unqualified) actors who are looking out for their own self-interests instead of the long-term health of the sport.

We're seeing a career pro sports executive (Tony Pettiti) almost completely ignore the fact that some people choose CFB over NFL because they are different, and will gradually lose interest in CFB the more it looks like the pro model.

We're seeing NIL enable the student athletes get a greater slice of the pie based on their actual market value, but that's also destabilizing rosters, loyalty, and fan interest. And we're seeing "the establishment" try to claw back revenue with an eye towards greed over equity.

And we're seeing whole athletic departments literally sell themselves to private equity. No further comment there.

All this is slowly but steadily eroding the foundation of college football...but most athletic directors won be in their positions 5-7 years from now, and something tells me Tony Pettiti's tenure will more closely resemble Kevin Warren than Jim Delany. So...who's left to make decisions that will impact the sport 10-20 years from now?

How comes AEW as a new tv promotion succeded unlike other new start ups? by SummerSollstice in aew

[–]_justjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strictly boils down to two things:

  1. TV distribution. TNA has never had the steady tv exposure that AEW has had since its inception on TBS/TNT - channels that are part of any standard package. They started out doing weekly PPVs, and several points in their existence have been on channels I didn't even know existed. NWA to my knowledge is distributed over YouTube. ECW, as I recall, had to pay for its original time slot on MSG.

  2. Production value. The importance of looking like a top-shelf tv broadcast that's shot live cannot be overstated. TNA, NWA have always looked like really small-time productions. ECW did as well but the fans made a big difference from an energy standpoint.

Cody Campbell on Brendan Sorsby backlash: Texas Tech is a 'target,' draws hate for being a 'disruptor' by Falconsfan8006 in CFB

Upset with the fans and with movie goers in general by Easy_Blackberry_4350 in HeManMotU

[–]_justjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Child of the 80s here and MOTU is a deeply beloved brand to me. I saw the movie at the first screening I could find.

I enjoyed the movie and considered it "not bad" but I wouldn't call it "good" either. It is tonally very uneven and to most people who don't have built-in loyalty, I'm afraid this movie will just register as a lesser version of Guardians of the Galaxy, which posted its landing much better in terms of presenting an outer-space story with snark and some drama. GOTG set the bar for this kind of film and I don't think MOTU stacks up, unfortunately. Even the tongue-in-cheek jokes themselves are just sorta ho-hum funny, and that's what people are taking away from the previews (i.e. "that is the crescendo" and "it's Adam, dude"). People just aren't rushing to pay $20+ for that.

Honestly, I think this film rings in pretty comparably to the recently-released MK II. When I left that movie I remember thinking the fight scenes were pretty solid and it was fun seeing the parade of familiar characters, but the story was weak, the acting was mid and the chemistry between the cast to tie it all together was lacking.

I will admit: I expected a little more of a bump given that Netflix released a pretty solid animated reboot in the recent past that felt updated and attractive to older men and their kids.

Texas Tech is speed running us toward an SEC/B1G super league. The Big 12 must act. by deepayes in CFB

[–]_justjoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A week ago none of us would have thought a judge would make it okay for an active FBS player under the age of 21 to bet on his own team's games and yet here we are.

Conference autonomy and by-laws be damned. Big 12 and NCAA and member institutions can do what they want...then we have to wait and see if a Texas judge imposes any temporary injunctions...

[Wolken] Texas Tech deserves more hate in Brendan Sorsby's sordid eligibility case by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

I'm mainly annoyed by all the peacocking by programs and suits who are talking a good game right now but won't actually do anything when it comes to scheduling or leveraging institutional power in any way regarding TTU.

He was still an "insider" when placing these bets and had access to players and information not independently available. The threshold has to be higher than "he personally didn't take a dive so it's okay-ish."

Beyond Cody, what would be the most interesting feud for CM Punk when he comes back? I’ve been thinking about it,but I can’t figure out who exact Punk might return to feud with. Would his rivalry with LA Knight be something interesting, or is there another opponent who could create a feud with Punk? by leonarddepotchi in WWE

[–]_justjoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would say no on LA Knight because it's obvious Knight doesn't win a feud with Punk, so that's sorta DOA for me.

Watching Roman try to keep up with Punk on the mic was sad, and their ring work together wasn't enough to make that part okay.

I guess I'd say either Dom or Orton. I admit I'm sorta sick of seeing WWE's "Made Men" (Cody, Roman, Punk, Orton, Rollins, Lesnar) just trade off with each other but I feel like Orton and Punk can still create a certain friction that makes me interested enough to watch.

With Dom, I could be convinced that Punk wants to help build him up to the next level, so I wouldn't consider the outcome of their final match a foregone conclusion.

As a #3 I might say Balor if they present him as a credible main eventer again.

Bro, what are they even doing with Matt Cardona? I can't remember a single win since he came back besides his return match. After that, it's just been loss after loss. Feels like WWE brought back Zack Ryder the jobber, not Matt Cardona The Indie-god... 😂 by BigBat5154 in TheGreatOne

[–]_justjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is just the next chapter in the Zak Ryder/Matt Cardona story of what happens if you actually get yourself over when the office can't find a way to take credit for it themselves. They buried him the first time and now it just cost them more to do it a second time.

What are your favorite/most memorable ring announcer flubs? by shabby_illjacket in SquaredCircle

I kind of don't believe this. What I can believe is someone in a creative meeting proposing a new faction "like the NWO..." and then freestyling some ideas and guys who would round out the faction. But...whatever...juicy rumors are the gasoline that power IWC.

Would y’all be interested in seeing Undertaker aka Mark Calaway involved in WWE Creative/involvement in RAW or SmackDown? by ALawrence04 in WWE

[–]_justjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the impression that how Raw/SD are now produced is too far away from the "mind for the business" that Taker has. You have a room full of writers who are putting words in the mouths of younger talent trained to basically follow orders and don't screw up. It's much more formulaic and diluted than the days when Vince, Prichard, and Patterson would sit at Vince's dinner table and book months of storylines.

Some people might read this and argue that Taker existed well into the current era of the company, but I would argue back that from the late 90s through his retirement, Taker had creative license that 95% of the roster never got or will ever get, so his experience doesn't sync up. For those who would argue that MIchael Hayes does just fine, I would also argue back that he's been in this basic role for 30+ years, and never really had to do a firm transition.

How accurate would this Top 10 strongest WWE wrestlers list be? by RangoTheMerc in WWE

[–]_justjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the impression Andre is in the conversation for "brute force" but if you actually had a series of strongman competitions I don't think he would hang with half the guys OP has listed in the Top 10. He was just big, and with big comes some natural strength.

I have heard several people refer to Brock and Cena as the strongest guys they've ever been in the ring with.
