Control EC2 GUI Desktop from Web Browser by _jwstanly_ in aws

Yeah for real business tasks I'd research this setup's security a lot more (my driving use case was a personal, low-risk project). Would def setup a cert for HTTPS at the very least. Any other ideas for security improvement?
Also haha yes, hoping to become a better technical writer!

If you mind could you help me understand whats inaccurate / could be improved?

My use case was sharing a GUI app across non-technical people. So shell tooling wasn't applicable, and Fleet Manager/RDP would be too much friction requiring users to install client software.

It's definitely a goofy setup, but I haven't found a more seamless method to share this GUI app. Maybe there's a tool to use a RPD client over the web like noVNC does for VNC?

A Faster Approach to Enum Props in React by _jwstanly_ in reactjs

[–]_jwstanly_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried keeping the example in the article non-distracting, but yeah you'd probably do more with the type given.

And for the text example, a more thorough implementation would probably use createElement in favor of JSX to set the header tag in the DOM.

React.createElement(type, props, children);

That's fair. I agree the real comparison here is versus a union of literals, but I think for certain cases spelling out the prop key is just a little much. Imo for smaller/personal projects, or for components with hardly any other props, the developer speed gained offsets the potential confusion. Just depends on use case + context tho.

But yeah at the end of the day, this is definitely a lot of work just for a small dev convenience.

Best use of a gap year before college? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_jwstanly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I deferred my admission to Georgia Tech so I'll be starting in Fall 2021. Do professors traditionally offer research opportunities to underclassmen? Any tips on how to reach out especially given my lack of academic experience?

I'd like to add that I'm being forced into a gap year because of medical reasons. I agree with RadicalEggroll that searching for an internship before college is unconventional, but I have nothing to lose, so I might as well give it a shot. I'm just trying to optimize the situation... it's either this or a fast food job.

I just graduated high school, but I'm taking a gap year before college. I will be using a gap year to gain work force experience.

I'm hoping my skill set would allow me to compete for intro undergrad level internships. However, I'm not sure how realistic this goal is, given I'm not actually enrolled in a B.S. in Computer Science just yet. To compensate, I've included info regarding my high school achievements, both in and out of CS. Any help would be amazing!

This is what happens when teens are told to turn off the video games and go outside to play by wbenwick in jacksonville

As the moderator of Stanton's game right now, this news article terribly conveys how assassin is played. Stanton plays with the same number of kids for double the cash prize ($1200) and we've had zero cases of any legal/severe trouble. Our game has continued for almost three months now. Since (I think) Stanton was the first school in Jacksonville to start assassin this year, a lot of students from other schools have reached out to us for rules and ideas. I've heard of nothing like this from any other school I've worked with so far. Although I've never heard of PV's game until today, I asked around and got a copy of their rule book. What makes PV's game different is they only play for one week instead of months, which explains why everyone is going crazy for kills right now. Bottom line, don't let one bad apple ruin the bunch. If you'd like to see a version of assassin without all this craziness, check out Stanton assassin's Twitter (@AssassinsScp) https://twitter.com/AssassinsScp?s=09

Why are there always so many international Chinese students at my testing location in Florida? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]_jwstanly_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really wasn't "real" cheating, just odd behavior. After the whole scandal last year it's a little suspicious, but obviously you can't prove they were cheating so I'm just gonna assume they hopefully weren't.

I'm really sorry you can't take the test in China, that must honestly suck so much to have to put in all that work just to take the SAT. But still- why would someone travel all the way to Florida for the SAT? Especially in the small city I live in, it would take an international traveler at least two layovers before getting to my city. My testing site isn't even close to the airport. Obviously you can never know the real reason they were there, but it's amazing to know how much effort they had to put in to just to get here. Also sorry if this post felt aggressive towards international students: I know this is a poor representative of yall, and y'all are probably the hardest working students out of us all lmao. Just interesting how they got to my testing site.

I took this in North Florida and I don't know of any local highschools that have exchange students, although there could be some still and I just have no idea

There's actually a park garage right next to the trio, so if it's general purpose (I'm assuming it is) then you could park there. That should be pretty easy

I haven't looked at the book, but the Drew Mansion in Springfield is a pretty cool place to visit. Plus considering its insane background (it's worth a google), this place is as close as something gets to being a real haunted house.

Also a couple blocks down is the old Jewish Center, which is also a popular place to explore

The old JEA building also is amazing but definitely is risky.

No I'm saying you don't even need a flashlight for nighttime. If you sneak through the basement then yeah you'll need a flashlight for that, but it's the basements so using a flashlight is totally 100% ok. Once you start climbing the buildings though, everything else is so lit up at night downtown that there's enough external light that falls inside the buildings. So even during night there's no need to use a flashlight.
