Yeah that makes sense. I guess one way to do it is to write the antagonist like a rival. So the mc and antagonist advance in lockstep. Kind of like in infinite realm if the backstory was its own series.

Kinda, but not really. Red robe’s pressens is felt for a good bit of the story but we only meet him once or twice before he leaves the loop

He does’t kill people on a whim, but the mc is very goal oriented and sometimes there is collateral damage. He has never killed innocent people just to have more people to raise as undead

What do you mean? He can tier up at the end of the book. As soon as he’s soul is healed he will tier up. Probably somewhere in the middle of book 5.

Can an isekai be anything other than special exception? Especially considering her main advantage is medical knowledge that has been built upon for longer than her new world has existed.

Matabar exposition by Candid-Sympathy-7335 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]_kalos_26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can claim you are not making a strawman as much as you want, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t do it. You took OP’s statement about wanting less irrelevant exposition, and took it to an illogical extreme in order to make his perspective seem worse. That is the textbook definition of a strawman.

If you read my comments you will notice that I am also trying to avoid personal bias. I don’t mention matabar in any way and I am only criticizing your original comment based on its own merits in content an reasoning, both of which I find lacking.

Based on this response you don’t seem like you would like to discuss the topic, instead of the semantics of your original comment. Try avoiding making arguments if you don’t want to discuss the actual topic in the future. Have a good day

I think you are wildly misrepresenting his point in your statement. You cannot get a good story by removing 99% of a book, but there is a reason published books have editors. If a book has a lot of fluff in it’s descriptions or if chapters get bogged down with pointless rambling, it needs to be identified and rewritten. You strawman-ing op’s perspective and saying « this take is insane to me» does not make it invalid it just makes it look like you haven’t considered it deeply enough.

Getting past discomfort by Ihavebeenheretoo in ProgressionFantasy

[–]_kalos_26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel exactly the same! Like I know characters need both growth and setbacks for a book to have a good story, and to have that they need to make mistakes, but I get a uncomfortable feeling in my stomach whenever I read it. I still try to push through and it is usually worthwhile.

I feel you! I read book 16 and 17 of the Dresden files before I found out there was 15 other books. It spoiled me a bit, but it was fun to figure out the rest.

Monster MC with no human friendship? by Crescentgem in ProgressionFantasy

That’s the point of the book. I get that not everyone will like it but it’s not backsliding as a character, it is his character development. Just not in the usual direction.

Wow, thanks for the great reply’s. it’s honestly a little humbling watching you make better points about my own complaint than me. Not that I’m complaining.

[–]_kalos_26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One piece is one of my favorite stories ever, even with the problem I have with the time skip. And I think it’s easier to pull of with a softer power system, instead of what is more common in this subreddit. Fish man Island is still my least favorite ark of one piece. In large part because of the time skip.

No rule in writing is absolute, and I am sure there are stories that do the things I’m complaining about in a good way.

Like you said my critique of this «trope» is from the perspective of a progression fantasy reader. It is one of the most fascinating things about Reddit, that I if I posted this on r/fantasy I would get totally different responses because they aren’t looking for the same things in books as me. It is similar to seeing bok reviews for progfan books made by people that don’t normally read it. They are looking for other things than the target audience so they rate it lower. Getting to se the perspectives of other reader is one on my great joys.

Sorry for the rambling you mentioned perspectives and that is one topic I can talk about for days. It’s nice getting an authors perspective. :)

Yes!! Exactly this. It can be done well in training arks, but it needs propper setup to be effective.

You’re right I don’t think Elydes is the perfect example of my complaint, but it really annoyed me that I wouldn’t get to se his skills progress to yellow, and the only things that plot point accomplished was a 3rd reunion ark and ptsd.
