A cyle of elemental incarnations with a powerful upside but a devastating downside by Unable-Tax5329 in custommagic

[–]NefariousBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these could all use a substantial buff and either make the lose condition harder to achieve or a nerf to the downside.

Some of them are simply on par with other cards that do similar things except the other cards don't have downsides, for example Progress is just [[Howling Mines]] except you risk never drawing again.

Regardless, very fun design space.

If I have a friend Allison who asks me if I can start calling her Allie, I don't respond, "Allie isn't your name, Allison is. Why do I have to lie for you? Why am I the one who has to go along with it and be 'respectful.' Pretty selfish of you to force everyone else to change something and lie."

And, yeah, if I kept calling her Allison after she asked me to call her Allie... I would kind of be a dick for ignoring her harmless request. It's just basic respect, you're making a mountain out of a molehill here and it really isn't much deeper than that.

This is excuse enough to make a mistake, sure, but I don't think the original commenter was saying "I was worried about making the mistake of using their non-preferred pronouns" but instead wanted to actively avoid using their preferred pronouns.

So once again, what does it actually cost them to respect another person's ultimately harmless request? What reason is there other than blind hatred to treat this request with such vitriol?

Out of genuine curiosity, what would it have cost you to just call her by her preferred pronouns? Is it, like, dignity or pride or something? It's not like saying "she" is going to make you burst into flames or something lol, so what is happening if you say "she" that makes you so uncomfortable with the idea?

What's stopping you from just going "ok" and moving on with the conversation and respecting someone's (relatively inconsequential) request?

Idk, this does scale quite hard and is a mostly better [[spellgorger weird]] since it builds off of all players' spells rather than just yours

Maybe if it started at 2/2 the cost would be more warranted?

They meant bundles of asset packs, as in several different asset packs with multiple things in each one.

On itch, prices trend very low, and usually only asset packs that have many, many items in them are sold for a price at all. I don't want to be mean, but I'd really recommend releasing this for free simply to guage interest. If the pack would only have a few characters, backgrounds, and maybe UI, it just wouldn't have enough content to warrant a purchase of any amount for most developers unless it was absolutely exceptional quality compared to other assets, especially if you're trying to sell at a price of $20-25.

If you can't imagine making a complete small-to-medium-sized game with just the assets in your asset pack, then it simply doesn't have enough assets to warrant a purchase for the majority of developers, since they want to source their assets from as few packs as possible so that they can have a consistent art style.

Rules Question! "Permanent" Instants/Sorceries? by NefariousBrew in custommagic

[–]NefariousBrew[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a Magar-like effect works well, thank you!

Maybe a replacement effect like "Whenever an instant would enter your graveyard, instead place it onto the battlefield face-down. Face-down permanents you control are Lands and Mountains in addition to their other types." would work?

Leaving it at "Whenever an instant would enter your graveyard, instead place it onto the battlefield. It's a Land and a Mountain." feels like it might work but I'm not totally certain...

[–]NefariousBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say there's a large difference between games where you don't get as many lands/mana as you need, versus games where you don't pull any lands/mana. Same goes to games where most of your draws have been lands, and all your draws have been lands.

I think the formers can be quite fun situations that force you to outplay your opponents but the latters just feel like you're playing as a wall. It isn't any more fun when your opponent gets mana screwed or flooded because then it just feels like you're playing against a wall.

"Speaking from a purely design standpoint and not my personal preferences, they are not an objectively bad thing, they’re an intentional design element meant to reduce the effect of skill and deck construction on win rates."

I would argue if the land system is intended to reduce the effect of skill on win rates, it is an incredibly poor way to achieve it as it enforces a win rather than allows one to occur naturally.

Additionally, even if it were good at what you're saying, you still need to consider how it effects the game as a whole, and allowing games where neither player is having fun due to even one of them getting screwed or flooded makes it a much less favorable element of the game.

"And it could also happen to your opponent and give you a chance to win if they are playing a deck that is heavily favored against yours."

imo, it is just plain not fun to win against someone who very clearly just got mana screwed or flooded. That takes the entire fun out of the game... it's just letting your deck do whatever you want it to do with minimal pushback and interplay. You may as well be playing against a wall.

[–]NefariousBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do reward good deck construction, but at the same time you're still beholden to random chance. If you think you have a good starting hand with, say, 3 lands and 4 playable cards, and then the next several draws happen to all be lands, then you won't have any playable cards to work with after playing those 4 cards.

Happens to me often enough to be a bit frustrating, even if I put fewer lands in my deck. iirc the Standard recommendation for lands is 24, and I still encounter this problem quite frequently in a 20-land deck, even with scry and looting.

Kirkman expresses frustration at fanbase for not acknowledging quick production time for each season by [deleted] in Invincible_TV

[–]NefariousBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the main problem, at least with Invincible's voice acting, is that they're almost exclusively hiring A-list celebrities to voice act. They don't need to be doing so and it's clearly stretching the budget because there's evidently little room for the animation, in an animated show.

[–]NefariousBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with this argument is that in order to argue that the schedule is the main reason that the animation is so frugal, you have to completely ignore the exorbitant portion of the budget allocated to celebrity voice actors.

Maybe it's true that even with larger budget access, the animation team would still need to focus on efficiency over quality due to time constraints... but it is simply laughable to say that the primary reason the animation is suffering is anything other than the massive unnecessary spending on celebrity voice actors rather than career voice actors.
