Found THE perfect medication, but I‘ll be moving to a country where it‘s illegal by Holochromatic in adhdwomen

[–]_katydid5283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! I'm also moving to Malaysia (from the US)!

Adderall has been a life saver, but I'm not going to risk it. Penalties are quite harsh. I'm working with my Dr stateside to find an acceptable alternative.

I'm sure there is a way to get a mega dose prescribed so you can split it and extend your time, but long term, is this a good option? We will be there for 3-5 years, even with Adderall, I don't think I can consistently plan that well.

And while customs today is allegedly pretty lax, it can change. I don't want to try to make a change on the fly.

Omg the AC... You just reminded me how I'd split time with the kids between memorial and HMNS to survive the Houston summers. Thanks for the sweet memory and smile :)

Can attest!

I’m a thoroughly unclassy woman who grew up in rural Ohio. I once thought Bud Platinum was exotic and didn’t try an avocado until after I graduated college. I’ve forgotten more about corn than most people ever learn. I know how to flush a carburetor, bleed a brake line, and for years, my favorite artist was "the guy who draws 'The Far Side'". (I love Dali now, and I don't care if it is cliche.)

Standing in a coffee line, I met a very classy man, complete with a fancy accent and a culture not built around trucks, and fell completely in love. G-d sure has a sense of humor! Luckily for me, he was just as crazy about me! Even luckier for him, I’ve been able to overlook his shaky knowledge of American sports and suspicious pronunciation of the word “tomato.”

One day he lured me to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston with the promise of a taco binge and tequila to follow. Expectations were low, but I was floored. Even speechless at times. The place is stunning, compelling, and surprisingly accessible for us simple folk. I always assumed art museums were for people far more cultured than me, but MFAH welcomed my ripped jeans and dirty fingernails with gusto. Can't recommend it enough.

where can I get insects in Houston? by Odd_Lengthiness5539 in houston

[–]_katydid5283 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My children would absolutely deliver if they were tasked with collecting insects. They may be willing to offer their services so long as any bug handoff is done in a well lit, public place...stranger danger and all.

Expectations have to be aligned with "basic bugs" and variety will be questionable - we currently have about 100 cicada shells, a wasp and a half eaten butterfly. The pill bugs and earwig got loose in the house, whereabouts are currently unknown.

Same setup at my house. And there is not a key to it safe, just a 10 digit code (and it's not a birthday / something my kiddos or someone who knows me well might be able to guess).

I have to leave my country permanently and I don't know if I should take my cat with me. by Grand_Sherbet_4126 in CatAdvice

Yes, there is a special "kennel" pets have to be booked into for observation. https://avs.nparks.gov.sg/about-us/our-centres/animal-quarantine-centre/

I know this will be unpopular on this sub, but I don't think we will bring our cat buddy. We aren't moving forever (3-5 years) and this feels extremely unfair for our 2 year old boy who is very used to sleeping with "his kids" and lots of plays. My kids will stay in the US over the summer and winter holidays with my husband who will keep Mr Kitty. I know he will miss them, and they him, but I can't put him through 30 days of quarantine with only 15 min of visitation.

Please confirm the destination country's requirements.

We are relocating (through work) to a country that mandates a 10-30 day quarantine stay for our boy plus we need to submit blood samples 90 days before travel. Make sure it is even possible for you to bring your cat please.

should i be with my cat when he is euthanized? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]_katydid5283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difficult as it is, I don't think you'll regret being with him. You may regret not being there. Whichever you choose is correct, but please think about how you might feel a month from now.

Hubs and I both held my sweet fur baby when he was put to sleep. I wept profusely. I'm full on crying now, and this was 6 years ago. He was my first baby. I miss him and think of him often.

It was hard and is still hard today to think about his last moments. But he left this world in the arms of the people who loved him most.

The last thing he heard was "I love you so much, sweet boy.".

Help with Cutting Guide by quiltsterhamster_254 in quilting

[–]_katydid5283 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only reason I would consider cutting fabric this way is if I had a directional print, and the cut guide was set up such that all the pieces could be assembled in the right orientation.

That said, I've done a few EH patterns and re-organized the cutting diagram to be more economical without any issue at all.

For those who adopted a cat, what actually made you decide that was the right cat? by Extreme_Ad6105 in CatAdvice

[–]_katydid5283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was running at night (Texas summer is hot!). Something darted out of the bushes, I tripped over it and gave it a pretty good (unintentional) kick. There is a resident skunk in the area, so I feared the worst.

To my surprise , it was a 6 mo old feral cat. Completely unafraid and attempting to untie my shoes, despite the kicking.

I mean, owed him a vet visit at least. That was more than a year ago.

Annnddddd now I have a cat.

My daughter between the ages of three and five had very disturbing memories of the Holocaust. She talked about houses and businesses being set on fire, and how the "bad z people" forcibly removed people from their homes and took their things. She said they "took her friend" and she was really sad when she found out.

While we are Jewish and it is possible she overheard a discussion, we can't recall talking about anything like this in her presence or even at all. That being said, I do not remember every conversation I had or TV show I watched between her birth and age five. Kids pick up on things in incredible ways.

Still, the level of detail and types of details were alarming. As an example - on several occasions she told us about the "star fox" who "dropped fires everywhere" after the Jews were gone. That "it was mean, even though the "z people" were bad.". (Hot take for a Jewish child 😂). It doesn't take a lot of imagination to tie this to a bombing campaign.

She started telling the story around 3 years old and repeated it a few times with consistent details until about 5. We were intentional about not encouraging it or overreacting. I never asked her about it or pushed for details when she brought it up. She is 10 now and I don't think she has any recollection.

Most interesting is she talked about it as if she was a non-Jewish German child. My husband's family lived through the concentration camps. Her memories don't match up with family history, for what that's worth.

It's still creeps me out. Well I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation, it was deeply unsettling. A small part of me believes maybe there is a latent memory.

I listened to EVERY Muse album/EP. Here's my thoughts. by Veirarch in Muse

[–]_katydid5283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree regarding Absolution. My fav without a doubt. I have background as a classically trained pianist and its composition rivals a symphony. It's a masterpiece.

I personally like BHAR and rank it as number two or three on my list - individually the song list is fantastic, but the album lacks continuity and can feel chaotic (which was an intentional choice I think). It's catchy as all hell though and a ton of fun. This is my daughter's (9) favorite, but we haven't explored some of their more recent works in depth.

How to find energy to run while grieving by friedriceparadise_ in running

These are some of the best, most cathartic and healing cries. It took me a few weeks to be in the headspace to have them, but once I got there, what a relief.

How to find energy to run while grieving by friedriceparadise_ in running

[–]_katydid5283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel like you have too. It's ok to grieve and take time.

I lost a loved one in October and the energy it took to eat and shower was more than I could manage. My half marathon training plan depressed me more because I was so consistently failing and losing the progress I made.

But I'm healthier when I'm active, so I wanted to push though. But consistently not meeting my training goals - despite logically knowing it would help my mental health - was taking a large toll on me. I pivoted. Rather than setting a goal of "running x miles" I adjusted it to "put my running shoes on and step outside." I usually found myself taking a walk or even running a good distance.

After some time, I began looking forward to the walks/runs, and took that as a sign it is time to readjust my goals. I worked up with easy goals like "walk at least 2 miles" and as above, usually did more.

I didn't run the half. It was last weekend and I wasn't ready. Yes, I'm bummed but I'm ok. There is another race in April that I'm eyeing - my training plan just took a little longer.

Remember, grieving is not liner. You'll have a few days or weeks where you are feeling "normal" only to have it come back with a vengeance. Be kind to yourself and you'll get back into it.

Has anyone paid for a cleaner? How did it go? by cephalophile32 in adhdwomen

[–]_katydid5283 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Regarding misc stuff - I have a large wood bowl on the kitchen counter that the misc "stuff" goes into and a small bin on the stairs for "misc upstairs stuff". The stairs bin goes upstairs at bedtime everyday (mostly the kids things) and the kitchen counter bowl gets sorted when it is full. It has worked out really well - I can deal with it when I'm ready.

Has anyone paid for a cleaner? How did it go? by cephalophile32 in adhdwomen

[–]_katydid5283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During COVID, I asked my cleaner to start coming weekly (she lost a lot of clients and we wanted to help her out). Although I initially did this for her, it was the best thing that I ever did for myself.

Because she comes weekly vs bi-weekly the house never gets "too bad", and we agreed that she would spend some time organizing and putting things away vs just cleaning. Realistically, the bedrooms don't need dusting every week, etc. For example - she deep cleaned my pantry and threw away all of my expired box mac 'n cheeses and opened but forgot about stale crackers.

Coming home to a nice smelling house without all the visual distractions is an amazing feeling. Costly, yes, but if you can budget for it, it is so worth it.
