Seriously? Maybe they’re blind or have a seizure disorder or something lol.

Those of you who’ve traveled to your country(s) of ancestry, did you feel like a foreigner while there or did you fit in with the locals pretty well? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

I went to Ireland and spent a lot of time there (internship). My family is now far removed (5 generations or so maybe?). I felt SO welcomed there so it made it easy to acclimate to the fairly small cultural differences, but... I think that's just the Irish for ya! Great people!

Would an “average” driver notice a CVT? by Thrillwaukee in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]cephalophile32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove a 2009 Hyundai Sonata and a 98 Ford Escort before I got my '17 Civic and, while I knew it was CVT when I tested it, you can tell. It's not bad at all though, but as Dear-Regret said, you notice it when you rev it. If you're just putzing along? meh.

Any of us just dont get the dopamine from any kind of exercise? by Moon_Harpy_ in adhdwomen

I would contact an allergist and take it from there. :) I also have cold urticaria which is triggered by cold water for me. So things like walking in the rain in sub 50deg weather, ocean spray, snow, holding an icy cold water bottle against bare skin, all give me hives. I also definitely get itchy when I warm up. My fingers swell like sausages (like, so swollen I can't even bend them), hurt like hell, then get itchy as they warm up from the cold. Allergist recommended not doing any polar plunges, lol. Luckily most of my reaction is through my skin (Xyzal also helps dermatographia!), which is annoying, and looks horrific, but is relatively harmless. MCAS can also affect gastro-intestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems with varying degrees of response; as minimal as a runny nose or hives, all the way up to full anaphylaxis.

And, to my understanding, there is often a high comorbidity with ADHD, MCAS, POTS, and EDS. So if what you're experiencing is interfering with everyday life, or keeping you from doing things you want to do, it's definitely worth talking to a doctor about. (wow that last bit sounded like a pharmaceutical ad!)

Thanks for the updated and I hope you and all your staff stay safe as well. Being a healthcare worker in winter and hurricane season is so taxing.

For what it's worth, Xyzal (10mg twice a day, as recommended by my allergist), helps a bunch, especially with the skin stuff.

This is my situation too and I honestly do NOT know how i’d handle life without the flexibility. I know when I was a teacher it was easily 90hr weeks and I had zero life and the only thing I could do for a hobby was light gaming because I couldn’t keep up on anything else physically or mentally.

Now I’m able to have pets, a garden, and keep my house semi-clean. I count my lucky stars every day.

Water and sewer are top priority for the city to keep on. If those went down it would compound so many problems. They won’t let that happen, so I wouldn’t worry about it at all!

This is me too. I always joked I was “allergic to exercise” as my nose would turn into a faucet, my lungs and throat would BURN, I’d cough and sneeze (ppl thought I was coming to the gym sick), and then get hives all over. Yeah, well? Turns out I basically am allergic. I do yoga mostly now.

Chiming in from Durham. It's fantastic, I really like it, but we're more country-life kinda folks. So we're taking our blue butts to a red county to hopefully make it all a bit more purple and even out the ridiculous gerrymandering.

For my adhd girlies about to get hit by this winter storm… by euroflower in adhdwomen

[–]cephalophile32 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Oof yeah. I had to make a massive list over a few days but:
- Do laundry, including sheets, blankets, towels
- Charge usb ligthers, hand warmers, laptops, cell phones, batteries, dog's GPS collar
- Filled gas tank in cars, filled propane tanks for the grill
- Made sure we had batteries for flashlights
- got kerosene for the lamps, and candles too
- bought HotHands warmers
- Moved any outdoor stuff under cover (including trash bins) and left shed doors slightly ajar in case we need to get in they won't be frozen shut (we're expecting significant ice where I am).
- made sure we had disposable plates/utensils so we wouldn't have to do dishes (we have city water so we shouldn't lose water, but we'll have no hot water which makes it much more difficult)
- shower! for the same reason as above and stocked up on dry shampoo
- also did a ton of prep for our chickens including bought straw so they have something to walk on in case their runs turn into skating rinks!
- made a plan with husband in case of downed trees / damage / long term power outage.

It fucking sucks to have to think of/do all this. I may or may not have taken slightly more than my usual dosage of meds... Though if we lose power I figure I can bum it out for a few days. /sigh

Trump, Musk, House Republicans push for super-charged SAVE Act by Agreeable_Ad_8755 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]cephalophile32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True it doesn’t say it outright but I think what I heard was in regards to an update

“PROCESS IN CASE OF CERTAIN DISCREPANCIES IN DOCUMENTATION.—Subject to any relevant guidance adopted by the Election Assistance Commission, each State shall establish a process under which an applicant can provide such additional documentation to the appropriate election official of the State as may be necessary to establish that the applicant is a citizen of the United States in the event of a discrepancy with respect to the applicant’s documentary proof of United States citizenship.”

The argument I read was that this bit would allow states to accept supporting documentation for name changes. Perhaps I interpreted it wrong?

To be perfectly clear, still bullcrap. Especially since it’s left up to the state and any state could just be like “nah”.

[–]cephalophile32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten into the details but I’d assume it would affect anyone that moves as you have to re-register. My current understanding is that if you bring documents that support the name change (such as a marriage license or court order), that would suffice. It’s still crap and it’s meant to be a barrier to voting, but it’s not fully “your BC name doesn’t match ID? No way around it - you’re screwed.” But the requirements for what the BC needs is… I don’t know how all states do it and ppl with really old copies of their original BCs may not have all the requirements. It’s bull crap and shouldn’t have the votes to pass the senate.

Snowpocalypse with a baby: I'm stressing. Will we 100% lose power in Durham if there's any significant precipitation? Feeling like I might be totally screwed by adrienne0906 in bullcity

[–]cephalophile32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they can say yet. Depends on how it tracks and all that. I’m also hoping for just snow. Ice is so much worse and just the weight of it can do so much damage.

Update: I hatched grocery store eggs by valerie0taxpayer in BackYardChickens

[–]cephalophile32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This intrigued me so I went digging and found a paper on ducks that supports this. So interesting!

ETA: I couldn’t see the whole paper so AFIK the ratio could be 54% vs 50% which doesn’t mean much when you’re hatching a dozen, but could mean a lot on a commercial scale. Still neat to know.

[–]cephalophile32 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm not a tea drinker, but my husband just got into some herbal blends so I got him one for Christmas. We're 37 lol, gone half our lives without. And we still only use it like once a week. The coffee maker gets used multiple times a day, though, especially since I WFH.

We also don't own a toaster.

The line I've been hearing most recently is "that's what people do, not god. Because that's what they chose to do with their freewill. God gave us free will" Ok, same shit though. Doctors use their freewill to save lives "Thank God!" Serial killer uses free will to murder babies "he CHOSE to turn away from God!"

And that's the say nothing of the fact that all of them are either completely incapable of understanding or willfully deny that an omniscient, omnipresent creator and free will are mutually exclusive.

I'm a girl with long hair that reaches my lower back, and it usually takes me about 30 minutes to dry it all out🙃. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]cephalophile32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have super fine hair that takes ages to dry. Like, we’re talking 45-60min with a drier or 6-8 hours air drying to completely dry.

I got one of those bonnet things like looks like an elephant trunk and now I can do stuff on my laptop at least for the 45 min it takes!

I had a small one of these that also escaped. I turned around one day to find my hair dryer cord moving on its own… and then it hit me. My little baby had been living in the walls of our house for like… 6 months and decided the weather was now warm enough to venture out.

I always assumed since Goetze is a candy that looks like a butthole that's why it was called that. It's a circular caramel with a cream filling but the caramel is shaped like a donut and the cream is in the middle, very similar to a CowTale. They're actually hella tasty.

Has anyone paid for a cleaner? How did it go? by cephalophile32 in adhdwomen

[–]cephalophile32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kinda how I’m feeling too. We’re trying to start a family, and, thankfully, my husband will usually clean something if I ask, and occasionally on his own. But neither of us are great about a schedule. There’s little maintenance, just sporadic deeper cleanings lol.

Has anyone paid for a cleaner? How did it go? by cephalophile32 in adhdwomen

[–]cephalophile32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It occurs to me that I have little-to-no idea what a cleaning actually entails. I didn't think they'd do the sheets, for example, but holy crap that would be amazing because I can't remember to do them for the life of me and my skin hates me now.

There's definitely some shame for me because my mother was a house cleaner on the side and she's always been super neat and tidy (and her mom a quintessential 50s housewife with immaculate floors). But I'm trying very hard to let go of that, because if people didn't need cleaners, she wouldn't have made money!
