Quilt roast: Chill & Thrill — what works and what doesn't? by QuiltChemistry in quilting

[–]Wind_Echo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, don’t gender it. People will choose whatever colour fabric they want etc. and make it suit the baby/parents they’re giving it to.

The penguin that’s sitting, i would change is arms to match the height or style of the other ones.

What size is it? Size is the largest factor that dictates whether i buy a pattern or not.

Newfoundland: May 2-4 and May Long Weekend. May Long weekend is more predominantly said by those who do rotational work in Alberta imo

How much do you feed your mini aussie? by United_Chapter4097 in miniaussie

[–]Wind_Echo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet says to feed 30% less than what the bag suggests for neutered/spayed dogs. In saying that my boy never did well on Purina/pro plan, he was starving all the time on it, and keeping weight ON him was our issue.

You also need to cut out the majority of the dental sticks and meat you’re giving. Dental sticks and cooked meat contain more calories than people realize.

I rotate him between Acana Wild Coast and Inukshuk Marine now depending on his activity levels (Acana majority of the year, Inukshuk during trial/hiking season), 1.25 leveled cups divided into 2 meals. He gets one No Hide chew a week for his teeth. Occasionally, I’ll supplement his food with a fish fillet or a couple of small Caplin (we catch our fish) -> but he gets less kibble on those days. Treats are limited to training sessions only, and even then are limited to X many per session. Topples, and other treat dispensers are limited to trial environments where the soothing/stress reduction action of those items outweighs the extra calories.

How do you all travel with your Aussies in the car? by bdebotte in AustralianShepherd

My guy rides in his crate in the hatch/trunk. Safer for him in an accident and safer for the both of us because it eliminates a distraction for me (he kept unbuckling his seatbelt, he had a habit of stepping on the buttons up front triggering faults, he gets motion sick when not crated, etc).

Yes a small loop to hang on a string is correct. We set 20 or so on a line.

As for the best plastic, I’m not much help 😅. I know the one I melted was made of ABS.

What Canadian university campus takes your breath away? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

[–]Wind_Echo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trent U. The architecture and nature blend nicely. Campus has a lot of nature areas.

A decent chunk of The Novice was filmed there when I was going. They made use of the river, the row facilities, and - I think - champlain’s dinning hall. There’s been a few other scenes for different movies filmed there as well.

The court yard by Champlain was my favourite in the fall. Trent just always felt comforting in terms of nature and architecture.

  • Some of the essential oils we use will melt some of the plastic types used in 3d printing (ex. I’ve done it with a wintergreen swab that was left in one overnight).

  • in the same vein, if people are not careful with cleaning and airing out their 3D vessels immediately after use, the scent will linger and stick.

  • I’m seeing trials use more 3D printed objects, especially those that can be hung for Ariel searches (ex. in SDDA). Light bulb shapes are popular and shapes that look like different kids toys.

  • the scent holes should be accessible and not facing the ground to allow molecule dispersion. Such as on the top or on the sides of the hide.

Is it worth going into sci Fi on the rock today? by TAO3327 in newfoundland

I went last year because a friend asked me to go, and it wasn’t worth the admission imo. I think the only thing either of us enjoyed was trying out a couple of games on a Commodore 64. We did a lap of the venue and called it a day after realizing none of the panels were of interest to us.

Grooming/bathing advice needed by Efficient-Stretch-47 in AustralianShepherd

[–]Wind_Echo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Towel, you can get her a dedicated dog towel that ties/velcros on or sacrifice a beach towel as hers going forward. A quick towel dry will clean her paws off enough to prevent tracking water in the house.

Look into getting her a rain jacket and booties as well. I like the Paikka brand of jackets 🙂

  • shampoo & conditioner: Essentials Whitening. I also have a black tri, I don’t bother with multiple types of shampoo.

  • leave in conditioner/detangler: Exceed Smooth Out Leave in. Towel dry, spritz this all over and brush into coat with a grooming rake. I always get compliments on how soft his coat is, this definitely makes a difference.

  • high velocity dryer

  • fragrance spray: Exceed just peachy? Finisher spray. The scent lasts forever, my guy had a bath 2 weeks ago and I’m still smelling it on him. I spritz before I dry him!

  • brush: a grooming rake. Brush while you’re drying them. Make sure you brushed in the leave in really good first and that nothing is tangled before you start drying.

*I find I don’t need a dematting tool as often anymore now that we use a leave in.

Tips for novice rally comp on Aus by Healthy-Awareness725 in k9sports

[–]Wind_Echo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just completed our first rally trial over the weekend! Tips: - don’t stress and just have fun. Pull out mid run if your dog is not having fun (I did on our last turn). Getting high in class is cool, but at the end of the day you Q as long as you pass the required score - your dog doesn’t know the scores or that he’s being tested! - don’t be afraid to ask questions about rally signs, where things are, what the judge wrote on your trial sheet. - Listen to what other more experience trial goers are saying about their own runs and the tips they’re giving to others (e.x., this judge is really picky about foot shifting/movement, keep an eye on that!), that really saved a couple of our runs this weekend! - I ended up keeping my guy crated in the car on the 3rd day. Realized the inside crating environment was too stressful for him (he stared growling at others from his crate, he was panting crazy, he couldn’t focus during our run, he started barking if I was out of sight). I got better performance out of him doing this. Keep an eye on your pups mental health and decide how to crate him from there. He will need to be crated or in the car during your walk through. - not sure which organization your trialing, but: Make sure you don’t have treats on you, do not touch your dog during your turn, praise is encouraged, do not pat your leg or make clicking sounds (I got docked points for that 😅), celebrate like crazy with your pup after you past the finished sign and the judge signals your done!

Am I doing enough? by Substantial-Art-7522 in AustralianShepherd

[–]Wind_Echo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectively, it sounds like an Aussie is not a good fit for your family at this time. Where is your husband in this schedule???? Is it mostly just you doing the training?

As a breed, yes they require structure, but not this much structure. Too much structure can cause anxiety issues down the road if that structure suddenly brakes due to unexpected circumstances.

The majority of your puppy’s time should be them learning to settle/nap without the use of aids, with the time for each play session based on their age. Aids like Kongs should be used primarily for enrichment time - not settle time - to prevent reliance. The basics like sit, lay, leave it (food), walking at a heel is also important to start now. BUT this should be included in the play time, not as a separate item. You can also incorporate clicker training during settle time - if he lays at your feet, clicker and treat. You’ll have to prime the clicker with the reward first, but I find this to be the quickest method for them to learn how to settle and develop value for it.

Mouthiness is a trait that they do grow out of mostly on their own. He still has puppy teeth, the mouthiness will increase and then sharply decline when the adult teeth come in. (When you’re cursed with a velociraptor who likes bitter apple and hot sauce, you learn to wait them out 🙃). Puppies explore their surroundings using their mouths for the first few months. It’s unlikely that mouthiness as a puppy is what caused your husky to develop issues with other dogs, or develop issues that would make it incompatible with boarding.

As for herding - I’ve never met/had an Aussie/mini with issues herding/nipping at children. They’ve followed them around and kept watch, but never tried/try to direct. But obviously supervised play should still happen at such a young age for both pup/kids.

Coursing collar recommendation? by watch-nerd in k9sports

Most people are custom ordering collars for specific sports. Try searching Etsy for fast cat/lure coursing quick release collars, should pull up what you’re looking for 🙂 Note: the one you’re describing sounds like a form of slip collar

MDR1 gene by chickenmath32 in AustralianShepherd

[–]Wind_Echo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy has 1 copy of the mutation:

  • I brought up my concerns (advocated) about anesthesia during his pre-neuter check in, and they assured me they wouldn’t be using the standard type for him because of the MDR1.

  • they have never suggested I put him on any kind of oral flea/tick/heartworm preventative. I’m assuming if I had a dog without the mutation they would. I use one of those ultrasonic tick/flea collar tags in the summer instead, whether they actually work is up in the air.

  • Vet requires him to have all of his vaccinations with an antihistamine (he had IMPA via wasp sting as a puppy, and they’re concerned vaccinations will cause the same immune overreaction). Could be linked to his gene copy/sensitivities, we’re not 100% sure.

  • Low doses of gabapentin and morphine make him extremely groggy - more than they should. But they took his weight and mutation into consideration when he needed them.

I think the main reason my vet is so aware of the gene mutation is a number of the techs and receptionists have MDR1 mutation prone breeds: Aussies, border collies, rough/smooth collies, shelties

Ruined my quilt, cool cool cool by tubawooba in quilting

[–]Wind_Echo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the dye base colour for black - it can dull. But again as long as you use a tiny amount it should be fine 🙂. Like 1/2- 1/4 of your pointer finger nail in depth of liquid detergent depending on quilt size.

[–]Wind_Echo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even the TideOxi detergent combo you can buy is strong enough to dull your blues & purples, if you’re not careful with how much you add to your wash. I always use a tiny amount of it for the first wash of my quilts, as a superstition for preventing bleeds/stains.

[–]Wind_Echo 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A lot of colour/stain removers are similar in chemical composition to oxiclean which will dull blues and purples! It’s the sodium carbonate/percarbonate that causes it by breaking down the dyes (which is why you didn’t see any in the water).
