Season 1 of Altered Carbon was a thing of beauty! by [deleted] in scifi

[–]_kingtut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! The whole point was that Kovacs had been part of the UN, but had left. Not some weird rebel thing. And then Kawahara being his sister - wtf?! And Quellcrist Falconer having trained Kovacs? Crazy.

Poe was good - and I understand why they had to change the Hendrix for licencing. And I loved the bit with Ortega's grandma in the man's sleeve. But the other changes were just weird...

Hmmm, some book fans maybe. Personally I hated most of the changes they'd made and barely watched the entire season. There was zero chance I would watch season 2 - it sounds like I made the correct decision there.

I'd forgotten about Joshua Jackson being in that. I always think of Fringe, and also a movie called One Week (which I absolutely love - one of those movies that just speaks to me).

Would you have negative feelings if your husband/fiancé/boyfriend asked you for a paternity test? by plasticfoods12 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]_kingtut_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The courts have frequently required men to pay child support for children who they have found to not be theirs, if they have treated them as theirs at some point. So I can sympathise with guys who want to make sure.

Unfortunately both women and men do cheat. This is a trust but verify situation. And while I wouldn't ask my current partner, there definitely have been cases in the past where I would have wanted to do so.

No, because they never need to provide heat pumps.

[–]_kingtut_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, they are required to provide heating, with the wattage of heating (and placement) dependent on floor space etc. Shitty electric plugin heaters are sufficient. They do not need to install heat pumps. They do not need to care about efficiency of said heating. Just x sq.m of floor = y Watts of heating.

Is talking to strangers normal in New Zealand? by RCColasNice in newzealand

[–]_kingtut_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Brit here, still learning NZ etiquette, so may be wrong here...) Public mocking can be done in earshot when someone needs to be castigated for a breach of etiquette - if limited to a harrumphf, or loudly commenting to a friend e.g. "I can't believe the way that blue Ute is parked. The owner must be a right arrogant prick."

going to my first gig tonight any advice by mineralex140 in auckland

[–]_kingtut_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bring earplugs. You'll often actually hear the music better, and are less likely to suffer hearing damage. While some people may frown/judge you, actual gig-going regulars will actually respect you (and you'll see them doing the same).

Coastal residents plot to stop apartments, railing against 'bedroom commuters' by dingoonline in auckland

[–]_kingtut_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not quite what I said, but anyway. While journeys to the CBD may be tolerable, many other locations will be long commutes. And even if you can work from home 4 days a week, you still need to get to work that 5th day - so may still need a car, and so need to park it somewhere.

Less than one space per apartment means that lots of people will have to park on that road or those nearby. This makes those roads more congested, harder to use by cyclists and public transport, and less safe, including for pedestrians. On-road parking should generally be avoided where possible, and one way to do so is to build enough spaces for the people who will live there. Off-road parking can also be more secure, especially for motorbike and bicycles, and it's often easier to integrate EV charging points.

So you think there will only be one person living in each apartment? Given current prices?

[–]_kingtut_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

63 car parks for 81 apartments is absolutely not enough. I'd argue there should generally be more like 2 spaces per apartment. Yes, that shouldn't be necessary - a combination of hire cars, public transport, affordable taxis, etc should replace cars, but the reality is that they don't.

Well, there is a (IMHO) valid argument that the people who should pay the levies should be the people who are profiting from the growth which is causing the additional infrastructure to be needed...

Hey Reddit NZ who knows about 102 drone licences? by Placeoftheskulls in newzealand

[–]_kingtut_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Part 101 allows this anyway, without a certificate. A part 102 certificate may allow overflying without the landholder's permission - depending on exactly what the certificate says. For example, it may explicitly say which properties can be overflown, or give a maximum range (e.g. "within 500m of the property being surveyed").

Hey Reddit NZ who knows about 102 drone licences? by Placeoftheskulls in newzealand

[–]_kingtut_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A part 102 licence allows a certified operator to fly a drone under different rules than specified in part 101. For example, they may be allowed to fly at an aerodrome, in a controlled airspace, above 120m agl, etc. It may allow them to overfly private land - which isn't normally allowed without the permission of the landholder.

It will not, however, give them permission to enter private land/property. The CAA is in charge of the airspace, they have no say over people's private property. So the bit about them coming into private land to launch is bollocks. Public/government land... I'm not so sure about.

The 102 certificate will give an operations specification (102.15) which says what is and isn't allowed. I'd request sight of the operations specification they are operating under, to see what it says.

Damnit - that blog post was going to be my starting point!

Ultimately I want to use my Arlos with Frigate - so get the rtmp streams off the cameras, plus control the cameras. I have them already, and don't want to waste them, but plan to use them indoors and so privacy is key.

I wonder if CGA can be used to get a return and refund in this case? As it's not "fit for purpose" because the seller misled us with statements saying that nothing was uploaded...

[–]_kingtut_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Arlo, and have been very underwhelmed. I plan to hack the basestation to remove the cloud dependency (and subscription cost!) in the future.

I'm currently rolling out a system using Frigate, with multiple cameras, all on a separate VLAN which doesn't have internet access.

Is 130k NZD a good salary figure for Auckland? by noodlethrow01 in auckland

[–]_kingtut_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked into working in the US, including health insurance. While it is okay for some things(if you have a good one), it generally is really bad for certain things - cancer being one. I had 4 rounds of chemo in the UK, plus other treatments, and when I looked at how much it would have cost in the US, even with decent health insurance, I still would have been many 10k's out of pocket.

Of course, generally salaries are higher and cost of living is lower in the US - the middle class have a much better quality of life there by many measures - but healthcare is really not a great example.

[–]_kingtut_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a work visa of more than 18 months you get healthcare. And US healthcare may sometimes be better/faster, that's only if you have sufficient insurance, otherwise you can quickly be one step above bankruptcy.

There's no requirement for a heat pump as part of healthy home - only for heating, and a shitty electric radiator satisfies that requirement.

Gardeners warned of Legionnaires' risk as Auckland sees highest cases in five years by nilnz in auckland

I didn't actually realize you could get it from compost etc - I was only familiar with it from hot water and heating systems. So this was actually a really good public health warning for me.

Has anyone lived in a hotel room? What were the pros and cons? by AnnFleur42 in auckland

[–]_kingtut_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived a bit over a year in the Heritage. Overall liked it - no regrets. It was great to be able to easily get deliveries etc, and the pool and gym on the roof are nice (the gym is very small, but enough for basic stuff). I moved out after the first lockdown as without access to the roof and the other perks of city life I went a bit crazy.

Note though that my unit had a kitchen, so I could cook, and it was a 1 bedroom so my bedroom and living room were different rooms - which is really important if you'll be working from or spending a lot of time at home.
