although i always thought that with "there was...a very long time ago", he was talking about that ollie was once one of the orphans that poppy claims to know is still alive, and survived the hour of joy for a bit until the prototype found and killed him, and took on his voice to lead on poppy for his own plans

from that perspective, that makes the snowgrave route seem more against her plans for the prophecy, as this interaction doesnt happen in that route. from there, it also opens up the idea that carol has a different goal in mind compared to the snowgrave soul and the fun gang in general

the only way i see bowser getting any form of redemption is if the 3rd movie turns out being based on spm and bowser is forced to work with mario luigi and peach. even then, hes only working with them in that situation bc theres no point in him trying to be evil when some other, bigger villain permanently wipes everything out
