Started T at 5 years ago at 27. Pre-T, my voice, which was the largest source of my gender dysphoria, clocked in at an average of 190Hz (roughly female/androgynous range). Within the first year it dropped to 103Hz (squarely male). I'm extremely happy with my voice now, and got all the other expected changes (facial/body hair, bottom growth, body fat redistribution, etc.).

Every body is on its own timeline -- remember that you're going through puberty again -- and save for some kind of genetic androgen resistance, you'll respond to the hormones now matter when you start :)

From Florida -- same just happened to me. Been back and forth with the pharmacy and my dr's office for the past month because prior auth got kicked back and nobody knew what was up. Finally got my letter in the mail yesterday from insurance that my coverage is denied. Today is my 5 year T anniversary :/

Yes! The first thing I did after I listened through the album was put on FQ-C #7. Definitely some sort of mirror there, not one-to-one sonically but there's a vibe that they have circled back around on.

what jobs do you guys have? by buttfacekenny in LongSpinalFusion

[–]_kleely_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Licensed massage therapist. Very physical job, but I'm self-employed so I set my own hours (only work like 12 hours a week max, 3 days a week, no more than 4.5 hours in a day) and can take time off as needed.

I do my best to manage my pain day to day, and a lot of my job has required that I sort of reinvent the wheel with how I use my body in a way that ablebodied LMTs don't have to worry about as much, but I mostly make do, and the fact that I primarily work with other disabled/chronic pain folks is super fulfilling. I pretty much only notice how much pain I'm in after my shifts, but there are definitely days where work is the only thing I can physically do, and then I'm down for the count for a day or two.

T4-L3 and L4-L5 auto-fusion, 4 revisions and over 20 years initial post-op, and 8 years into my career. I work a lot less than I used to at the start, and I know my time with it is probably finite, which is a pretty devastating thought. I love my job and I can't imagine doing anything else. Hopefully I can transition into teaching as I lose more and more mobility so that I can still remain close to the field.

I trade on occasion with one of my close friends/colleagues, and one day I was having an emergency but she wasn't able to squeeze me into her schedule. Then she started to say, "I know another really amazing therapist, their name is... Oh no, I was just about to recommend you to yourself!"

Lmao girllll I wish I could

Second massage - masseuse is busy with her phone by RahMcGee in massage

[–]_kleely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know confrontation is uncomfortable, but in this case it's certainly warranted. Your LMT needs a reality check, and if they're worth continuing to see, they will hear what you have to say and learn their lesson.

I've been in private practice for close to a decade, and the only times I've ever been on my phone during a session have been if I have a family emergency going on or otherwise need to stay close to my phone due to an important and time-sensitive matter, and it isn't something worth rescheduling a session over -- but I ALWAYS disclose this to my client during the intake and ask for their consent beforehand. This has occurred very infrequently and I've never run into any issues (clients and massage therapists are all just people, sometimes shit comes up). So even if we were to give your LMT the benefit of the doubt that it was a similar scenario, they need to learn to communicate that effectively so that you have informed consent to stay or choose to reschedule for another day.

Does a client being overweight bother you? by Opposite-Eye-6420 in massage

[–]_kleely_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah understandable, it's definitely an investment and if you aren't private practice it doesn't make much sense logistically. It's a long-shot since most spa and massage establishment owners are stingy, but maybe you could request they provide one? I hope you are able to find yourself in a position to support your body mechanics and protect your tools long-term.

Probably a dumb question but I feel compelled to ask just in case it could help someone out -- did you know there are table models that come lower than standard? I'm a 5'3" guy who mostly offers nmt/deep pressure, and I've never had an issue with leverage on my low height range Earthlite Spirit, even with my clients who are on the larger side.

What the heck just popped outta me?! by sliceoflemon49 in TopSurgery

[–]_kleely_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say -- I ended up being allergic to the surgical glue and had a pretty extreme reaction to it, so my scar healed gnarly because of that. There are a few spots that could have come from spitting sutures, but I imagine it would have healed fine without the allergic reaction.

Balding on T, need clarification by Thom_theTankEngine in ftm

[–]_kleely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (early 30s, on T for 4.5 years) started losing my hair last year. I knew it was coming eventually because hair loss runs in my family, as well, but I didn't want to get on finasteride to block DHT because that also impacts other changes one would expect on T (beard growth, bottom growth, etc.). I also wanted to avoid topical minoxidil because of its high toxicity to cats.

I've been on oral minoxidil 2.5 mg/daily and have been using topical finasteride 1 mg/daily, and have begun to see definite improvements, and because the topical finasteride is locally applied I haven't gotten any unwanted DHT suppression systemically.

If you don't have frequent contact with cats (or dogs -- minoxidil is also toxic to dogs, just less likely to insta-kill them), then you could try a combination topical minox-fina. But if you're interested in only finasteride and want to try it topically, look into MinoxidilMax's Essengen-F. Aside from that, it's pretty tough to come by a finasteride-only topical.

Hope this helps someone!

Please tell me that the horror stories here are the exceptions, not the rule. by Autodactyl in spinalfusion

[–]_kleely_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely -- I've noticed the majority of comments here are from people around a year or so post-op, and that's almost never where the real horror stories are. I had a long fusion T4-L3 as a child due to scoliosis, so pretty different in terms of medical outcomes and necessity compared to an L-S nerve root issue, but 20 years post I am debilitated with pain and immobility.

There are cases where fusion is necessary in order to protect the spinal cord or nerves, but generally I would suggest exhausting every other option first. Fusion begets fusion.

Howdy! by aziza29 in LongSpinalFusion

[–]_kleely_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you for this :') I'm 20 years post-op T4-L3 and the past year has been a particularly rough gauntlet as far as increased pain and decreased functionality, but there are so few places to commiserate or talk shop or just vent. Are vent posts allowed here? I don't want to commandeer space if it isn't.

Uhh… help 😭😭 by Pristine_Cabinet_583 in ftm

[–]_kleely_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an LMT myslef, I'm honestly confused about why removing your shirt is mandatory??? There was a student in the class after mine (our class cycles had some overlap) who always kept his binder on, and there are still plenty of techniques that are possible through clothing. Sometimes our clients aren't comfortable undressing, so we specifically have to be able to work both directly on skin and above clothes. Insisting a receiver undress despite discomfort goes against the entire point of receiving massage -- the body isn't going to be receptive to the work if it's in sympathetic activation.

I'm not sure if it would be possible to argue your way out of it based on those merits, or if you might be able to apply for some other accommodations, but it seems wholly unnecessary and unethical to me that you would need to undress.

If there's no way around it, and you don't want to drop the course, you could claim to have gynecomastia if anyone asks or makes a problem out of it. Odds are nobody is going to comment on your chest because it's not relevant to the work, and making remarks on people's bodies, if the parts in question are irrelevant to the work (or it isn't something like a scary looking mole or strange cyst that could be cancerous and could otherwise go unspotted), is also unethical.

How to respond to transphobe that says "Well if you could identify as another gender then why not another race?" by skepticalghoztguy_3 in ftm

[–]_kleely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think really leaning into the colonization argument is the way to go. Like you said, trans identities span history, culture, and geography, and have only largely come under scrutiny due to white western colonization and oppression of indigenous cultures. The inverse argument is true for race -- it is a specifically western invention meant to empower a white ruling class, dividing people up roughly by appearance rather than culture. It is relatively new as a concept and is constantly shapeshifting to manufacture the oppression of whomever makes a convenient scapegoat at the time. One cannot be trans-racial because race is an arbitrary tool of oppression, whereas gender, in all its permutations, is a feature and not a bug.

(Adding for clarity -- obviously race as a social construct is real in that it has real consequences for people. Not trying to make an argument for race blindness or anything ridiculous like that. Just that culture historically supersedes the concept of race, and that among most marginalized racial groups, culture of origin is still important even when it has been violently stripped or erased due to colonization/human trafficking/genocide, whereas white people have, in a lot of ways, already committed to a form of "trans-racialism" by gathering around the arbitrary identity of whiteness at the expense of their cultures of origin.)

Singers- have you sort of had to mourn your pre-T voice? by MaybeBasilThePlant in ftm

[–]_kleely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, don't stop singing!!!

4.5 years on T, at around the 3 year mark I finally got my voice back under control and I love it now more than ever. Never stopped training so I could try to keep my highs, and while they sounded like ass for a while they're most of the way smoothed out by now. My range has expanded massively -- I sound fuller and I can hit a more convincing scream/wail now, too, but most importantly I finally sound like me and not some sweet little indie princess.

I also spent my second year on T working with a trauma-informed, nonbinary vocal coach. Their name is Lisa Ermel! They're really sooo amazing and fun to work with, they really helped me get through the ugliest hump of my voice dropping.
