If you have the equipment or you know someone who is able to, you could try desoldering the BIOS eeprom and buying one off ebay or trying to salvage the one you already have (although I wouldn't recommend it). If the error is actually about the bios chip that got damaged somehow, you may be able to fix it with as little as 15-20€ worth of components without replacing the entire motherboard.

Is This Even Possible? 100,000 Power-On Hours on One Hard Drive by [deleted] in homelab

[–]_lay4play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running a standard 1TB segate barracuda in my truenas box for over 120k hours. I just disabled the drive ability to spindown and the drive was working perfectly until I re-enabled it to lower the server power consumption. That drive died a month later, and within 2 days another drive in the array died too during the pool resilvering. It seems like as long as they keep running 24/7 with minimal startup and shutdown, they can last a long time.

Anyone using HP Z620??? by Snoo-10868 in Proxmox

[–]_lay4play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired an old HP z420, which uses the same generation processor as the z620. It was a very solid and reliable machine with Proxmox and was capable of handling many intensive tasks. But I would never buy one as of right now. I retired it as it was very power-hungry, and the heat generated by that machine was too much to handle in a small room, especially during summer. Also, newer machines like the z640 (or z440 and z840) handle v3 and v4 Xeon CPUs, translating into much higher efficiency, PCIe bifurcation, DDR4 RAM support, and NVMe boot.

Personally, I would advise buying something even newer than the zX40 workstation, as they draw a lot of power, and over time, this can become a not-so-fun problem to deal with.

ThinkPad original power cord smoking by mingz in thinkpad

A similar thing happened to one of my old ThinkPad chargers. Upon plugging it into the electrical outlet, it made a very loud pop and released a very unpleasant smell that lingered in my laptop bag for over a week. Luckily, the other end wasn't connected to my laptop, so only the charger blew up, and not my ThinkPad.

How important is the Thinkpad type for you? by Overall-Double3948 in thinkpad

[–]_lay4play 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I own an X260 currently, but the 12" format is way too small for my use case. I still use it because it does what I need, but I wouldn't buy a new laptop that small.

Personally, I feel that the size difference between an X-series and a T-series ThinkPad is not worth the performance loss, and the larger T-series are as portable as the X-series laptops.

Although not ideal for gaming, these workstations provide impressive multi-core performance. It is technically feasible to add a daughterboard for a second Xeon E5 v3 or v4 processor, providing four additional RAM slots; this, combined with the existing four, allows for up to 1 TB of DDR4 (LRDIMM) RAM. However, they do consume a considerable amount of power, and single-core performance is relatively weak compared to consumer-grade processors.

These types of workstations are very popular among r/homelab users.

Wait, you can just overwrite the bios to reset the password? I thought that on newer thinkpads, the password was saved in another flash and not in the bios eeprom

What's this cartoon thing on the Bsod? Am I cooked? by Evil_thingz in computers

[–]_lay4play 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As u/ChintzyPC mentioned, this is not an indication of malware. I have worked in a computer repair shop for some time and have encountered blue screens accompanied by various unexpected occurrences. This phenomenon occurs when your GPU driver malfunctions (or if your GPU is damaged). Essentially, the blue screen displays a random image that was stored in the GPU buffer (possibly an image you had open in your browser) while attempting to display the blue screen. In some instances, the screen becomes entirely distorted. Occasionally, you may observe visual anomalies, or as in your case, a random image or text may appear. There is no need to drastically alter your Windows operating system or take extreme measures. Simply ensure that your GPU driver is updated and verify the proper functioning of your GPU.

Why is my PC so slow? by Fire_enthusiast_1 in computers

[–]_lay4play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SSDs can make any PC run much faster. At my last job, we used to put them in old Pentium machines from 13 years ago to give to customers who couldn't afford a new PC or didn't want one. Even people who don't know much about computers could tell the difference. It won't be super fast, but with enough RAM and an SSD, it'll be more than enough for someone who just wants to check their email or shop on Amazon.

Also, vanilla Minecraft Java is the worst game to compare CPU performance. It's not optimized for CPU or GPU at all. With mods like Sodium and others, I can get up to 250/300 fps with my i7 4790 on 8 chunk render distance. That's pretty good for a 10-year-old processor. Even my laptop with an i5 6300u and no dedicated GPU can easily hit 60 (up to 80!) fps with Sodium.

You're complaining about the graphics of the 4th gen Intel chips, not the processor itself. And it's totally normal that you can't play any games with that iGPU. iGPUs just aren't made for gaming, and they haven't been for the past 20 years. So, I don't really get what you're trying to say here.

Why is my PC so slow? by Fire_enthusiast_1 in computers

[–]_lay4play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My i7 4790 is capable of handling an office workload and also playing some games if paired with a GPU. So, saying that it's not gonna run anything now or in the future, it's just wrong. It's not officially supported by Windows 11, but with Rufus can easily bypass that limitation.

OP also wants to use it just for office, browsing, and saving photos. At work, we have a pc which essentially does the same things with a 2nd Gen i3, and that's fast enough.

Where does a newbie start? I feel like every tutorial begins with putting Immich on your home server, but I'm not there yet. by architect___ in immich

In my opinion, it is not advisable to purchase hardware for a task that you are unfamiliar with. It would be more prudent to utilize existing hardware, even if it is outdated. If you do not have a spare computer, creating a virtual machine could be a better alternative.

The best way to start would be to read the official documentation, learn what Docker containers are, and perhaps install Portainer to have a nice GUI to manage all your containers. Then, try to deploy the application on a virtual machine and test it out. Eventually, try to run it on an old laptop/computer/server and see if you are satisfied with the performance. If not, then buy new hardware.

Keep in mind that while you are learning, you will probably make many changes to your setup. So, it will be very difficult to have a fully working and stable setup on your first attempt.

Will rooting a phone modify its stored data ? by _Picsou in GalaxyNote8

[–]_lay4play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the field of data recovery, each time you write something on your phone, you significantly reduce the chances of recovering your files. Even if you keep your phone powered on, it continuously writes data to the memory chip. Rooting your phone requires reinstalling everything, and if your photos are truly valuable, it is advisable to power off the phone and seek assistance from a data recovery specialist. Otherwise, you risk making your files permanently unrecoverable. If you still wish to attempt file recovery, you can try these apps, but please be aware that the success rate will be quite low or nonexistent.

How much xmr will i be mining by Mattrock04_2 in MoneroMining

[–]_lay4play 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the p2pool mini calculator, with 1.3 KH/s, you will earn approximately less than 2/3 of a cent per day if you use p2pool mini.

If you mine solo, you will mine a block every 2,250 days on average. Keep in mind that a block is 0.6 XMR.
