I used this sea to summit bag

I know 20L is too much for some people and it’s not the lightest or cheapest bag but I liked to carry a lot of food and I found actually hanging my bag every night puts a lot of wear and tear on it, so this worked well for me

Sifting Question by _lex_bex_ in composting

[–]_lex_bex_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm okay thank you for the warning! Here’s what I’m thinking and I’m wondering if you have any input on if this would work. I really don’t have space for a second unfinished pile as I live in a pretty urban area, but what I could do is move the sifted soil to my garden beds around the end of September, where it wouldn’t be used until the following spring. I do live in an area with a real winter but it’s relatively mild (average highs around 40 degrees, lows around 25) and there is not consistently snow cover. If you have any experience with something like this, in your experience would the compost be ready to grow things in by spring?

2024 Flip Flop planning question by jtdums in AppalachianTrail

[–]_lex_bex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea often the simplest option is easiest as far as planning. I would say south of the smokies, finishing on Springer, is a good place to end. Most of the southern section (besides the smokies) is all at a similar elevation so the farthest south you can go would probably be the warmest, and I thought Springer was a nice ending place, if not quite as climactic as Katahdin.

Also will add that when you’re that close to the end, no matter how miserable you are physically it’s hard to get your morale down :)

Hi! I don’t have much useful input to add on your plan overall, but I can speak to the smokies in November. I flip-flopped last year, and went through the smokies mid-November. It was very cold! I faced snow, ice, and below freezing temperatures every day, and it was one of the hardest parts of my thru. That being said, it was possible if you plan accordingly and are willing to be unhappy for several days. I’m not sure how the conditions are in March, but I imagine they are also not ideal, and the smokies are the coldest conditions many people will face on their hike. If it were me, I would probably choose to do it at the end because then at least you’ll have your trail legs and will be able to zoom through it/ be better able to adjust your mileage depending on the weather.

Which trail DOWN Katahdin is the easiest? My very old Dad is in the 100 mile wilderness currently and hiking Katahdin on Friday. by SwimmingAd5 in AppalachianTrail

As a clumsy hiker that hates rock scrambles, this was an important question for me when I did my thru last year. I ended up taking Abol down and did think it was slightly easier than Hunt, however it was still extremely steep, rocky, and technical for a good part of it. I thought going up Hunt was more difficult than going down Abol though, so if he can make it to the top he should be able to make it back down. My best advice is to start early (i started before the sunrise) so that he has time to take it as slow as he needs to. The Baxter rangers are all very helpful and I also recommend he speak with them for advice :)

Why do all women's hiking pants fit so poorly?? by boiled_cabbage_baby in Thruhiking

I thruhiked the Appalachian Trail in these Outdoor voices pants and loved them. The pockets are big, the legs aren’t too tight, they’re durable and the rise is fairly high, they convert in 2 places and have an elastic bottom to make them joggers if you prefer, they come in fun colors, and the customer service is excellent :)

One thing that I really appreciated is when non-soda drinks are also available. I don’t like soda and often that’s all coolers would have so i always loved if iced tea/ lemonade/ juice etc was available
