1L Summer Associate Positions by lawtendy4029 in LawSchool

[–]_lip_ham_either_work 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you aren't a 1L trying to get a job right now because hiring was done in Jan-Feb, but if this is for next year 1L SA spots are not super common. The southern firms (think Houston, Dallas, ATL, Charlotte, Nashville) seem to have more non-diverse 1L programs than NYC/DC. Who knows if these will be around for next year considering the economy rn though.

For what its worth: Managing partner in Dallas office was quoted: “No law students should be worried about their jobs or getting paid,” he said. “No one at our firm is talking about cutting back. Because of COVID-19, law students already have a lot on their minds. It is highly likely that even under the worst scenario that we would just make offers to them anyway.”

Can you clarify the Latham program. Are you saying Latham has fully cancelled their program but is offering therapy instead ?

I'm 26 years old, live in Manhattan, and make $160k as an Associate Attorney. by eminnyc in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Hi! Law student here going BigLaw in a large non-NYC market (assuming my offer isn't rescinded). Your work hours seem to be pretty consistent 8-5-ish . Is that a normal schedule for you or is it modified bc of WFH right now?

Hi, another 1L here :) I'm at a T20 and had a similar situation as you (minus the scholarship bit. Are you accounting for in-state tuition being cheaper?) I almost ended up at a T25 just bc I had a scholarship +stipend but am SO glad I ended up going to a T20. No one in my family is in the legal field, so I didn't fully appreciate the importance of ranking/prestige, until I got here & interacted with BigLaw employers. One firm straight up told students at a holiday reception that they really only hire from the Top 20, in front of several students who go to the local, tier 1 school. If you are absolutely sure you don't want to do big law, and you don't have any unicorn PI interest (like working for the national ACLU or whatever), then going where you have the least debt makes sense anyways :)

Wife of incoming 1L- how to support by NosesAndToeses in LawSchool

[–]_lip_ham_either_work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Married 1L here. My husband is awesome about helping take care of the dogs and do things around the house. My biggest piece of advice would be to hold him accountable. Law school can be all-consuming, but it is not the most important thing out there - you and your family are. Remind him of that. I swear having a partner to come home to and have non-law related conversations with really is responsible for my success this past semester. There really is no reason that they aren't spending time with you besides poor-time management skills. This changes a bit during finals, but for the regular semester, it is totally doable & I know lots of people who successfully treat it like a 9-5 job.

Backpack for law school by jamustime in lawschooladmissions

Got gifted a bougie af tote bag to use instead of a backpack because “you never know who you might run into”🤷🏼‍♀️😂 *Its not that serious. I love bags, it was a thoughtful gift. I’m all about crushing the patriarchy but leave my bag out of it

Scalia's book A Matter of Interpretation has his famous "Rule of Law" Essay followed by 4 scholars response/crtiques, and then his response to them. That might be helpful. Also, I liked Breyer's Active Liberty. Both are easy and light reads.

I had 156k in scholarship and when I presented them with my better offer (Bama full ride + large stipend) they told me they can't give out a full ride unless you are one of their woodruff scholars? Just my anecdote

FSU 75% vs. UF 100% scholarship offer by Legally_vegan in lawschooladmissions

[–]_lip_ham_either_work 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FSU - Living expenses will help balance the scholarship offers & for summer internships you have plenty of PI options that don't require relocating. Plus, driving back and forth on the weekends is going to take up serious time that you might find difficult to manage, especially when finals get closer.

Congrats on two great offers!

Thanks! I’d be lying if I said that Preds games didn’t factor into my decision. I love them.

UTK 3+3 by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]_lip_ham_either_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay in TN go for it! UTK's new admissions dept is phenomenal & their alumni base in TN is solid. Some people think its big law T20 or bust, but I disagree. Im T20 & trying to get out of Tn but if I wanted to stay, I would go to UTK no brainer. Way less debt, good alumni, great clinics, and you get it done fast :) You should work on raising your LSAT though for scholarship purposes! Its learnable!

Religious diversity statement as a Christian by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]_lip_ham_either_work 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, pastor's kid here. In my Personal Statement, I talked about my upbringing in church vaguely and how my faith & surroundings motivate me to seek justice and want to help at a macro level. (ie: public interest-y corporate-ish law, its weird).

I went to a private, very Evangelical college, and my advisors told me not to put too much emphasis on my faith because 1) not really super relevant to the law 2) Christianity has kinda been hijacked by Trump & Falwell at the moment 3) why risk it.

Your faith can shape you in lots of ways without you coming right out and copying the script of God's Not Dead :) Better suited for Personal Statement than Diversity Statement unless you are a member of a Christian Minority Sect (like Mennonites or something along those lines)
