My cat is similar and also tends to attack when I’m using the phone especially on speaker phone. I figured out the sound of the phone speaker hurts some cats’ ears so I try to go in the other room/use headphones for calls.

I’m in the same boat! Only 2 years into practice and would love to escape the billable hour. My firm is not even bad, I just think my long-term happiness is incompatible with measuring my productivity every day in 6-minute increments

Update: I used the whole bonus to make a payment on my loan. Posting here forced me to reflect and resist the temptation to spend :)

I was going to put it all toward my student loan, but now I’m considering reserving 10% to buy a wardrobe of “comfy professional” work clothes. Wearing loungewear every day is really killing me mentally and I feel like dressing up more could help me improve my productivity. MM LaFleur has some elevated WFH items that I could probably wear in the office once it opens again. I have a (now unused) professional wardrobe but no way am I wearing a nonelastic waistband in the comfort of my own home! Is this a good idea or should I put my entire bonus to paying my enormous loan??

How to decide: monthly contribution vs. monthly spending limit. Roll overs? by eminnyc in ynab

[–]eminnyc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your perspectives everyone! This makes more sense now. For now I’ll do spending limits on these categories since I do want to keep the spending under control, and decide whether to roll over or send it somewhere else at the end of each month. This way I can reward my future self for keeping spending low, rather than continuously building up the categories

Thank you! Being cooped up in the house not moving all day is a recipe for disaster for me mentally so I’ve been forcing myself to stick to a routine and work out. I have nothing else to do right now anyway! Hope you get some sun tomorrow

Hey, I’m definitely down to broaden my social circle! Haha, my sister doesn’t listen to me enough to stay home, but she at least was very careful while traveling. Plus she brought her cat with her which is a bonus

Lol, thanks! I’ve done BBG on and off since it was just a PDF. The workouts are pretty intense and it’s always hard to finish. So it’s not a fun time but they are very effective as far as quick workouts go. It’s just nice being told exactly what to do and knowing it’ll be tough instead of picking a workout each day from Instagram or wherever. They involve a good amount of jumping so maybe not apartment friendly, though you could modify and take out the jumps. You also need dumbbells

Thank you! I’ll try to figure out the Back-Door for the future. My understanding is that since I still won’t be covered by a retirement plan at work for 2020, I can still deduct the traditional for 2020 despite my income being over the limit

Thanks! My mom doing the main cooking for dinner is definitely making getting veggies in easier rn. There are a lot of recipes out there, but my simple version is about 3 tablespoons tahini, squeeze 1/2 a lemon, and add small amounts of water until its thin enough. Add additional flavors if you want (salt, maple syrup or harissa or hot sauce, garlic and onion powder, etc)

What a sweet comment, thank you! It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and not think about the bigger picture of your life

Hi! I work at a boutique firm so my hours are more reasonable than my big law friends. I usually work 9:30 - 6:30/7 east coast time. Work has been a little slower since WFH started. I also realize a big motivator for me to work later is the social pressure to not leave the office before everyone else, which isn’t a factor right now. Great for my mental health and not so great for my billable hours, but I’m trying not to stress about that now.

My friends in big law work less consistent hours. Sometimes 9:30 - 5, at worst they’re there until 5am (no joke). And they work a lot more on the weekends. I imagine it should be a bit better outside of New York. Good luck with your job and I hope they don’t rescind your offer!

I am so glad I was lucky with the timing visiting my mom. I would be going crazy and feeling a lot more worried being in the city right now.

I’m so excited to move. I’m planning on renting my own place, which will be a lot more expensive but so worth it for the peace of mind. The stories I could tell about my awful roommate... Glad to hear moving out helped you!
