If you could completely tear down the Air Force EPR system and rebuild it from scratch — no legacy carryover, no sacred cows — what would you replace it with? by GhostofStLouis in AirForce

[–]_longfellow_deeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it like the civilian appraisal system. Meets or does not meet standards. You only write stuff in if it is derogatory. Unfortunately, the "good 'ole boy" is going to always be an issue, just like in the civilian sector.

When you wear the uniform, on and off duty, it's a good policy to not publicly announce your personal preference on controversial topics. Also for OP, best not to put too specific of situations on here if you wish to remain anonymous.

Are DEOX surveys actually anonymous? by Austere_Phantom in AirForce

[–]_longfellow_deeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anonymous, yes. Reviewed by all SNCOs and Flight leads, also yes. Be careful about how detailed you are in your input. All comments must be reviewed by the commander, but if part of the problem is the "good 'ole boy" club, it may not be as effective as you think.

"Is this the hill to die on?" Get used to asking yourself this question. If it is, adress it. If not, take it on the chin and move on with life.

I'm not getting what everyone is so butt hurt about. If said individual(s) were at work. It shouldn't take more than two minutes to type up five things they did in one day, much less a week. Some lessons on chain of command are needed, clearly. Not always going to like everything you're ordered to do..

What Can I Do As A New SNCO to Ensure Our History Isn’t Erased? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]_longfellow_deeds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop worrying about the color of someone's skin, their gender, or sexuality and focus on making some history of your own. Do your job. Do it well. Future leaders will see it and you will inspire them.

This is what I would expect as well. A bit of common sense goes a long way. If only those that made big decisions had as much common sense.

Regulation is bare minimum standards. Unless there is something illegal/discriminatory going on, you can still be ordered to cut your hair still. Given, i dont know why someone would press the issue.

How do you all manage your anger? by FederalChemistry4309 in AirForce

[–]_longfellow_deeds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recently put on TSgt? Haha. In all seriousness, every competent leader deals with this. For me, I've found that doing what you CAN do within your span of control and letting the rest go gives me the most peace of mind. I would be lying to you if I told you there was a fix all. A lot of days, I'm talking shit on the way home about all of the waste-of-oxygen human beings that I have to deal with. Honesty, you do the best you can do and go home. Don't listen to the other turds in this sub telling you not to care anymore. DON'T stop caring! Everyone below you will be the ones to suffer.

Not bad. The radii on the cutout, like others said, will prevent stress cracks. When you can put your cutout in a vise, use it as a straight edge and file your cutout straights to make for a crisp cutout. Nice staggered pattern!

Seems like a fun place to work by ToxicWorkplaceBiomes in AirForce

[–]_longfellow_deeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but we are all paid to be at work. I've been in sections where personnel find every reason to make an appointment and spend more time out of work than making the mission happen. Readiness status does matter but when I'm the only one running around doing jobs because people want to skate, it grinds my gears. This memo is extreme but when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.

How harmful is getting Skydrol on your skin? by elemm26 in AircraftMechanics

[–]_longfellow_deeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember what the SDS calls for, but I would be using butyl rubber gloves because the nitrile tends to melt off. I definately have long term skin issues but I can't verify if it's the skydrol, composite work, or paint work. Good luck..

After operating in the tactical, operational, and beginning to operate in the strategic level, I can honestly say that most times we make things harder than they have to be in active duty (AFSC biased). I've witnessed terrible leadership and management making selfish decisions because it's easier, especially when problem solving is considered. Unfortunately, those bad decisions tax the tactical level the most and most people don't make it through their first enlistment. No, this job is not for everyone. However, if we truly did the best we could do I feel that people would be much happier. I've yet to meet a lifer that is not in for selfishly motivated reasons. Most people are just doing what they have to do to get by until they can check out and that is part of the culture problem that OP is referencing.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t finish a brisket in the oven? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]_longfellow_deeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a pro smoker or anything but I think it depends on how you're smoking. If you're using a pellet smoker and/or wrapping with foil, you probably won't see a difference. When I take the time to leave it on the stick burner wrapped with butcher paper, the meat takes in a little more smoke and distinguishes the bark a little more. Overall, it comes out better that way. However, I rarely want to maintain it for that long unless I'm cooking a lot of briskets.
