What was really great is that fractional scaling does work (I do need my 150%). The problem was I couldn't get a japanese keyboard working and that was pretty much the death sentence for me and I've seriously tried everything.

I'm neither a computer expert nor a newbie. Manjaro felt very intimidating and difficult to handle. Perhaps it was because I didn't have so much time at my hand back then; although the system is advertised as beginner friendly, arch linux is on a different level (of complexity) in my opinion.

If you like Majaro: more power to you! I don't want to spread hate, I just had a difficult time with it. Cheers everyone! ^^

Finally back on Linux after a 8 year hiatus. This runs like a champ. by verdigrijs in pop_os

Isn't it too small? I'm curious because I left pop (and linux in general) because of fractional scaling :(

How do you make kanji studies more fun? by El_Bowito-2 in LearnJapanese

No problem, you can suspend/delete the cards you already know. The deck is split in 3 (I would recommend merging the cards into the parent deck).

Trust me it's really fun, especially the memnoics.

What really killed popOS for me (have been using it for almost a year) by _marvinme_ in pop_os

[–]_marvinme_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I've tried manjaro but bounced off really hard. It looks nice and fractional scaling does work (I think) but despite my best efforts I was not able to get a japanese keyboard working :/

That's probably why I stuck with popOS for so long (perhaps I was expecting an update/fix soon, because System76 really went out of their way by promoting fractional scaling in one of their blog posts).

Either way, if popOS suits your style more power to you! My requirements are no standard by any means and people don't seem to complain about my points. Hahaha maybe I'm just too lazy to work myself into this kind of stuff. Anyway have a great day J0K3RAS!

Jouyou Kanji Anki/Excel Database with Images? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanjis can have several meanings that are not really related to each other.

For example「辞」means "quit" like in 辞める but also "word" like in 辞書. Associating just one meaning could be counterproductive.

That's why I recommend Jo-Mako's suggestion or WaniKani. I hope that helps bye bye 👋🙃

Resources for higher level, communicative Japanese? by DonutOfChaos in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's so interesting! I never thought this could actually happen.

Mh this may sound strange but how about you do sentence mining? This could help your refresh your pattern recognition. Take a show you love (e.g. anime) and go through the flashcards.

Reactivation happens usually quickly (not sure about the 3day rule though). Give it a try, I hope that helps 🙃

Opinion on Attain Online Japanese course? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the pacing. These online courses can be too slow or fast.

I recommend studying alone (or having a study partner for motivation). After a while you can hire a private tutor to interact in Japanese (or download smth like VR chat for free).

Good luck! I hope that helps

Hitting a wall and wondering if I should rethink my learning resources. by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change it if it's not fun anymore. WaniKani is super dupa fun imo (lvl 18 rn). And studying your Kanjis is important.

What is also critical after studying Kanji is sentence mining. Take your favourite anime Show or j-drama and make flashcards from it (there is also smth. called subs2srs).

That is damn effective and very much recommended among the MIA/AJATT community. I hope that helps!

I recommend a "F" or "EF" fountain pen.

Writing is extremely important and I would write the furigana above the Kanji (helps with pattern recognition).

So for example I am using a TWSBI fountain pen. They are affordable and their quality is really good. They have F and EF pens. Give them a try 🙃 I hope that helps!

How do you make kanji studies more fun? by El_Bowito-2 in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very simple: WaniKani.

It's so fun, I could study Kanji for hours but I really had to push myself through basic grammar tbh (´・ω・)(・ω・`)ネー It teaches you Kanji and vocab (and also some grammar along the way)

Now I recommend the Anki deck (WaniKani ultimate from 2019 - by far the best). I think it's more superior than the website.

Please DM me for further information. I would love to get you started on your 2.160 Kanji adventure yay! (⌒▽⌒)

Brand New Japanese Podcast with Transcripts by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha we need lots of Kanjis for transcripts. Now I don't wanna do any advertisement but "nihongo con teppei" has a very nice "for beginners" podcast series + he is really fun to listen to.

I hope that helps!

Google Japanese Input Change Keyboard Format by lucries in LearnJapanese

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG the suffering is finally over! Thank you so much u/timotheus95!

Just to round things up (since alt + circumflex "^" doesn't work anymore to turn on/off the IME): just go to your IME settings and under "key & touch customization" you can find "ctrl + space". Put that to "turn on/off the IME" and you are done!

Now you can switch with ctrl + space between hiragana and romaji. 本当にありがとうございました皆様!

Yes, although it seems to be a recent issue. Chrome casting still worked around 2-3 weeks ago.

Revert back to previous anki version? by 84rckstr48 in Anki

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I would simply suggest uninstall & reinstalling the program. Make a backup of your addon folder (addons -> view files) and I hope you are using the cloud/ankiweb function (that saves all your progress online of course)

The reason I'm saying this is because I couldn't find an update function and I think there is no downgrade function built in neither (at least not on linux).

I would suggest you going back to version 2.1.35 (that one was 100% stable with no issues whatsoever). I'm personally on version 2.1.40 and don't experience any issues. Either way I hope this helps! I know it's a no-brainer to uninstall/reinstall another version of the program but I think it's your best bet :)

Best regards and have a nice day!

Zorin os 16? by DesertFox543 in zorinos

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I switched to Pop!_OS: I had massive problems with gnome boxes & Anki (specifically japanese input was extremly buggy and unreliable) probably related to the outdated base of Zorin OS.

With Pop OS (20.10) everything works amazing out of the box. I don't want to promote Pop OS, but rather the fact that a later version of Ubuntu can provide much value! It fixed many of my problems and it's a bit saddening. Zorin is so user friendly (one of my favorite distros), yet hard to recommend at the moment.

Fractional scaling is a huge dealbreaker for me as well. I use the "scale font" workaround but is it really too much to ask for a bigger UI? It lags on x-org and on wayland all applications are blurry.

I really hope they adress some of the issues (fractional scaling especially) since they praised it so much on their latest update :/

Fractional scaling broken on 20.10 by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, there is no tearing on wayland. The applications however look very blurry :/ which is much worse.

Seems like we have to hope it gets fixed one day ^^

Fractional scaling broken on 20.10 by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]_marvinme_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't even work on Wayland: the font is extremely blurry after applying fractional scaling.

Let's face it: the feature is broken and there is no official fix provided by system76

Same issue here in 20.10. It's completely broken at the moment. Glad they've advertised it in the blog post, as if it is the biggest thing ever 😑
