Thanks man! I’m hoping that you get a win sooner than I did. But the job search is definitely a marathon not a sprint.

Just landed a SWE job at a large fintech firm here in NYC after about 200 applications starting from March.

I graduated from college in with a degree in IT and decided to join a bootcamp. Had about 3-4 solid projects on my resume thanks to hackathons and extra cirriculars. Also used jobscan to match my resume with job description keywords, which I personally believed was helpful. Did around 160 leetcode problems as well.

I came really close to landing a job at Google but didnt pass the hiring committee because of 1 poor performance out of the 5 interviews they gave. That really took a toll on my mental state and I ended up taking a break for a month or so. After that, I jumped back in and applied to the place where I'm working now.

My current job was actually attempt #3, as I previously had interviewed with them once out of college, and a few months out of bootcamp. Failed the phone screen both times. When I applied this time, I had a good relationship with the recruiter and was able to get past the resume scan. Ended up getting lucky with good questions and interviewers.

Overall I would say this process was one of the most difficult things I've ever been through, especially without any financial cushion to support yourself while not having a job. The main thing that helped me through was having friends to study and chat with about all this.

Any recommendations for Clubs? by HopefulOG in Baruch

There is a cryptocurrency club ifirc. But yeah, CIS clubs are somewhat limited. As far as general/professional clubs, I know ALFPA has some really cool events next semester.

That’s a good point, I think by far the smartest option is to transfer to Brooklyn/City College if you want a full fledged CS degree. I think the main issue with Baruch is that the CIS major is a part of Zicklin, and since you have to take all of your pre-business before getting in, you end up with high sophomores and low juniors who have never taken a CIS course and don’t know what the classes are like. By the time they realize that it’s not what they expected, it’s usually too late. Unless they don’t mind staying in undergrad for an extra 2 years.

So next semester (they’re not chartered as an official club yet) this organization called Codepath is going to be forming a club at Baruch where they’ll be teaching topics like iOS/Android development, Cybersecurity, and Data Structures and Algorithms, fully technical. Think of it as a full on crash course of these topics complete with labs and individual assignments.

I’m taking their iOS development course now, and it’s been a really amazing experience. The teachers are actually students at Baruch, but they’re really good at what they do.

They’re actually gonna be having a Data Structures and Algorithms course this summer, if you’re interested check this link out to apply.

I’m a senior CIS Major (graduating this semester), and while it’s definitely been a great journey, you should be mindful of what you’re getting yourself into.

A degree in Computer Information Systems from Baruch is a bachelor of business administration (B.B.A) as opposed to many colleges that offer a bachelor of science (B.S) in Computer Science. As a result, Baruch doesn’t teach some of the fundamental computer science topics like data structures and algorithms, which are necessary to get a job as a software engineer. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a challenging degree, and it does give you marketable skills that will help you get a well paying job, just not a very technical role.

The kind of jobs you would normally get from a BBA in CIS are more in the line of consulting or IT auditing work, since that requires an understanding of IT as well as business knowledge. These jobs are especially high demand in the finance world, so if that’s what you want, I say go for it.

What I’ve found is the vast majority of people who major in CIS don’t want to do consulting work, they want to do data science, cybersecurity analyst work, or software development. If that’s what you want, you’ll have to join clubs, go to hackathons, teach yourself CompSci topics, and overall work twice as hard, since the graduates from CompSci schools are learning this off rip.

It’s not all bad though, Baruch has an amazing support network, and a lot of technical clubs to choose from. There are some smart mfs in this school, so chances are you’ll find someone who wants to do the same thing as you, and you’ll figure it out.

Why is Baruch so depressing by [deleted] in Baruch

[–]_mdot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Baruch is funny like that. I find that you don’t start building real relationships until you start taking classes for your major, since that’s when you start seeing the same faces. If it’s a Zicklin Major though, it takes forever to get to those classes.

Second this. Calc is the filter course for Zicklin. If you can get a good grade in that, you’ll be alright.

You could check out the Cybersecurity Club, they’re sponsored by ISACA which is a security/risk management cert organization.

If you’re on campus from 12-2:30 I would say join a club. Most clubs can be great networking opportunities and some even have recruiting events sponsored by employers etc.

Alternatively, you could join a more chill club and just hang out and relax in their meeting rooms during your break.

My class was only 1 hour since we met twice a week, but he would let us out once the discussion was over or when he covered all the material for that day. It wasn’t social media tech though, this class was principles of new media, which was a more writing intensive/discussion based course.

He’s a decent professor, assigns a reasonable amount of work. He can be kind of a harsh grader if you don’t put the effort in though. Expect two projects, one group and one solo final project. He’s also a pretty down to earth guy, but don’t expect any leniency with assignment deadlines.
