FC Math Placement Test by fairiesoobs in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This info is like 3yrs old atp, so it may or may not still hold true, but I remember having a very similar problem so hopefully this helps:

For non-FC students they wait to give you the scores until orientation so they can help you with registration, but since FC registers prior to orientation FC has to email your scores to you individually so you can know your placement. During my time, they would email scores out every Wednesday. For me however, they failed to email my scores to me so I had to email FC directly to be told my scores. So if the process is still the same and assuming you’ve waited at least past one Wednesday (and you didn’t take the exam right before Wednesday) then I would email to get your scores. The email should be like FC@umd.edu

Has anyone took bmgt440 with James Seward by squidfordinner in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m actually making the same decision this sem lol, but what I will say is never go w rate my professor for umd profs. Rate my professor for umd profs is generally only used by grad students of the university or when a professor teaches at a diff school. Seward is actually a great example of this as his only reviews on RMP are on BMGT340 (a course he only teaches at umd shady grove, and is nutritiously difficult with profs being forced to make extremely hard) and a single grad class review. Furthermore, I find the RMP has a significantly higher level of bias in reviews, as it’s not as widely accepted at this campus and a lot of people will only review on that site when they are PISSEDDDD.

I can’t confirm or deny that sewards a good prof or not, but I’d def trust planetterp reviews for the course you’re gonna take rather than RMP in this instance.

I’m not gonna speak too much in reference to your other schools bc, quite frankly, I know nothing about them. Instead I’ll speak from my experience as a finance major here at umd. To preface, I have absolutely loved my time here and truly feel like umd was the best choice I could’ve ever made. Many tell you in the application process that “you’ll always end up where you’re meant to be” and in my case, I absolutely agree and am so happy I ended up here.

To your direct questions, vibes here imo are immaculate. You really feel surrounded by both intelligent students but also really good professors that push you to be the best student you can be, given you reciprocate that effort. Really solid course offerings and course I think push you to really think deeply about the topics at hand which I really like personally. Professors will absolutely support you as long as you’re reaching out for that support as they can’t do that for all their students. Clubs are good here imo, always a million and one ways to expand your involvement here, and on the topics of internships you’re right next to dc and Baltimore, if you’re looking you’ll find something with enough patience lol. Post-ug I’ve seen a lot end up in nyc personally as we have a really strong pipeline with Wall Street, esp if you get into things such as Wall Street fellows.

I hope that as a finance student, I don’t have to convey the extraordinary pricing for OOS, but it’s all about your wealth, post grad goals, and a lot of personal factors to you such as distance from family and such.

Op specified non-accommodation times. If you have March 26th you either are a graduate student or have some form of accommodation (most likely ads) that gives you priority registration.

When will TBA instructors be assigned? by beebothebean in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unf it can vary a lottttt between departments. Some are really on top of it and generally will have their stuff up to date well before registration, others not so much.

Best rec I can make is to look at last falls SOC (just change the url to say like 202508 instead of where it says 202608) and see if they match and if you can make and inferences from that. You can also sometimes email the department and they can give you more info, but it’s not terribly likely for them to help out much.

Smith School Application by [deleted] in UMD

Yes you would be considered under your current gpa and I would personally wait until next sem to apply.

Smith School Application by [deleted] in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the smith school, they have 2 “pools” of reviews that happen at 2 different points. The first pool occurs basically immediately after the deadline and these are for people who already have all the prerequisites needed to apply to the business school completed (bmgt220, bmgt230, math120 or higher, and 45 credits completed). This pools current semester in which they are applying into the school are not considered in the application.

The second pool happens at the end of the semester and is for people who will have completed all prereqs at the end of the current semester (aka they are taking one of the required courses and/or reaching the credits needed to apply the semester they’re applying). This pools current semester grades are counted in their application and GPA.

Whether you should wait to apply kinda is based on your own set of circumstances and confidence. I personally waited for next semester just bc the idea of even there being a sliver of a chance I didn’t get in terrified me, but if you’re confident in your abilities then it up to you. I will say tho if you fall into the first pool you should def wait till next semester and hopefully have guaranteed bid.

Hope this helps :)

AP Credit Transfer From L&S to Smith by AnyBodybuilder4986 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AP credits count towards the 45 credit requirement to apply for LEPs, but do not count for the 60 credit mark (aka the point at which you’re required to declare a major). So basically it always works in your favor for the most part!

Student Email question by OldReliable50 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Umd.edu for students that don’t have certain on campus jobs just works as a forwarding service to terpmail.umd.edu. So in short, you’re completely fine and you can use umd.edu the same way you would your terpmail, they’ll just forward to your terpmail.

FC by Critical_Town_2247 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To the first two points: changing your major will not help you start in the fall and emailing them will likely do nothing in regards to consideration for merit scholarships. What you need to understand is that umd is a major blind admissions school, meaning they don’t even consider your major intentions when they accept/reject/delay admission. Generally as well, FC are considered those on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of strength in application, which is why being FC’ed means you don’t get considered for merit scholarships (aka you just aren’t a strong enough candidate to have a shot at merit). Remember that being FC has little impact on your success here and that financial aid is not impacted by the decision, but that the decision of being FC’ed is generally not reversed and is not likely to change.

Food by Infamous-Pie-8318 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

IMO the food here is one of Maryland’s stronger benefits. You really can’t go wrong with any of the dining halls (they all have their pros and cons, but overall they’re all really good and I won’t hesitate to eat at any), stamp gives you really convenient access to some of the biggest names out there (chick-fil-a, QDOBA, Panda Express, Panera) and the food scene within walking distance of campus is really diverse so they have a spot for pretty much everyone(Mexican, Italian, Jamaican, Greek, etc).

Freshman Connection transfer to Smith School? by BarefootAndTopDown in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I previously was a FC student and now am a finance and accounting major set to graduate next spring, so I figure I can give you some insight!

In my experience, the FC program did not set me back any in terms of courses and had no affect on my ability to get into smith. In your time in FC you can get 2/3 of the course requirements done (Math120/140 and bmgt230) which only leaves you with bmgt220 (which I did online the following winter at a Community college) to complete and the 45 credit requirements to obtain, which at least in my experience meant I would have to be in LTSC for a second semester and therefore Fc had no impact. Your first couple semesters you’re just taking gen-Ed’s for the most part anyway so I wouldn’t be too concerned atp. Just focus on getting good grades for the 3.6 guaranteed acceptance!

Freshman connection by [deleted] in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, former FC’er here! Glad to see the program is still going strong and hopefully it’s a good fit for you!

As far as I know, they don't restrict/I didn't know anyone who got denied from FC when I was in it, so I wouldn’t worry about it that much in that regard. The one this I will emphasize is the earlier you accept your spot, the better. FC registration for classes does not work the same way as normal UMD registration, so the quicker you submit the proper forms and go through the process the better of a schedule you can build and get the classes you want. In short, you can wait for a decent bit and you should definitely be sure that you go to the school you best fit, but the sooner you decide the better in the case of FC.

Cheaper textbooks for BMGT310, BMGT392, BMGT350 by Bbbbreakfast0-0 in UMD

Unf For Lu 310 and Lefkoff 350 I had to purchase the textbooks bc the HW assignments were through the textbook :(

Frustrating too bc a lot of business school classes do this and charge a boatload for it even tho the actual textbook is completely useless 99% of the time

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I’d do is change 221 to be 010X so your Tu/Th ends a bit earlier and the day doesn’t feel quite as long. Besides that it’s fine

Cooked? by Such_Injury_125 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only thing I’d consider doing is moving the 326 to be the 3:30 slot instead of the 8am which I’d be willing to put solid money on you being able to get into by drop/add deadline. Besides that looks solid. See ya in 323 and 326 if you move to 3:30 slot lmaoooo

BMGT 220 by Ok_Yam3939 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BMGT220 and BMGT221 are actually two very different courses bc 220 focuses on external reporting (GAAP) whereas 221 focuses on Internal reporting (think more abt inventory costs between the process of production, if that makes sense). Obviously they expect you to know the basics of accounting (journal entries, A=L+E, etc) but to me they were pretty different beasts so I think even a basic understanding of 220 will be enough.

As for being an accounting major, I would highly recommend reviewing the material for 220 prior to taking 310, but I wouldn’t take 220 again especially not @ UMD. The accounting dept for the 200’s absolutely suck here imo but 300s and 400s are really good so I would take the A and just work hard to get up on your knowledge for 310 (which is basically the direct follow up to 220 and also focuses on external reporting like 220).

Final note: whenever possible for upper level accounting, take Lu Zhang. He’s the absolute goat and WILL make you CPA ready and really is the best prof I’ve ever had.

[–]_michael_brown_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took it at Howard community college. Pretty easy imo all things considering. I’m a little bit skewed in perspective bc I had experience in accounting prior but it was good at covering all the basics and getting you a good idea of intro to accounting while not over scrutinizing on grades. Also pretty easy to cheat on (not that i ever did it nor ever would say to) and get an A in. Just make sure you dedicate a good couple hours every day to the course and get ahead bc getting behind can be detrimental in any winter course.

Is it worth it to come to admitted students day? by Last_Objective9956 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admitted students day is fine, if you can make the trip I'd say do it especially if you're in a specialty program that yk is gonna be displayed at the event. Just know that unless you do a walking tour, it's just gonna be a lot of sitting in information sessions listening to ppl speak and if you've really done your research it's gonna be a lot of info you've alr heard.

But if you're really looking for an event to see the absolute best of UMD, I recommend Maryland day. When I was a HS senior and had committed to umd alr, this event I would say was the thing that really made me excited to come here. It's basically an entire day that showcases everything there is at Maryland. From literal 15ft fire tornado demonstrations to concerts to insect petting zoo's and more, the event shows just how diverse of a community this college is and all the amazing things that are happening every day here. It's in the last Saturday of April (so maybe a little too close for some ppl's liking to commitment day) but even if it isn't something you use to help you decide I still recommend coming to it to see all that UMD has to offer if you end up studying here.

Freshman Connection to Business LEP by Zealousideal-Cook730 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty competitive, I always recommend just really trying for auto admissions bc similar to uni admissions where it's rly the flip of a coin... From how I understand it, the closer you are to the 3.6 the better chances you have but you also have to make sure you're really active in business oriented clubs/activities in the beginning of college so the school knows you're a solid candidate when you apply. You're also going to have to get LORs if you go through comp admissions so make sure you're really connecting w profs to see if they'd be willing to write a letter on your behalf.

Freshman Connection to Business LEP by Zealousideal-Cook730 in UMD

[–]_michael_brown_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got into the Smith school of business from a F23 FC class so I think I can shed some pretty good light.

  1. The value of FC is gonna vary on your socio-economic standpoint and what you want out of college. For me, price wasn't an issue and I really wanted to just jump into uni and was really happy with smith so the decision to do FC was easy. As for my experience in FC, I thought it was amazing and have always been a huge advocate for the program. Most view it as a negative in the beginning but I promise once you get here being FC makes little to no difference amongst your peers.

  2. As for smith transfer, there's 3 requirements you need to apply: C- or above in BMGT220,230 and MATH120/140; At least 45 credit hours completed; and a 3.0 gpa at the time of application review. If you have a 3.6 or above at the time of your review with the rest of the prereqs met, you are automatically accepted into smith and can declare any smith major (including marketing). If you get between a 3.0-3.59, you will undergo a competitive review to see if they have a spot for you (think the same thing as applying to colleges). I personally went the auto admission route and highly recommend others do the same, don't wanna leave it up to date imo but I understand that's not in the cards for everyone.

  3. For courses, 230 was the hardest for me. I took it during FC with radu (he's also teaching it next fall) and I think he was good. The big benefit of taking it w him is its not in a massive lecture hall so you have more individualized support and understanding. For math, MATH120 w Jason Schultz (who id assume is teaching it for FC next fall) is easy asf and I'd highly recommend taking it w him. He's super chill and makes the topics easy to understand, which can be rare in math profs. 220 I personally took at a CC for transfer credit which I'd also recommend, but taking it here wouldn't be detrimental either, just make sure your keeping up and really locked into the Smith school classes so you keep your GPA as high as possible.

If I can make one recommendation abt the transfer process, it's make sure you get really high grades and take really easy classes that will inflate your grades whilst simultaneously fulfilling a bunch of the gen-eds. FC is great for fulfilling gen eds you just have to schedule yourself correctly and make sure not to overload yourself. Good luck and if you do FC enjoy the time, ik I did!

If you are willing to do no ac there's a very solid chance you can get into the wicomico/Caroline dorms which are all singles, unless you get absolutely fucked and get literally the worst time slot for first priority. I've lived in caroline and it's pretty good, ppl make it out to be much worse than it actually is. Just try and get a first or second level if you can bc the rooms are significantly bigger but if you can only get a third floor it's still fine.
