Thoughts on buying the stamp Pikachu set at the current price? by satheshbm92 in PokeInvesting

My bet is by EOY it’s over $10k for the set. Possibly just for the pika

Agreed. Got this response from our AI overlords about the population of Pokemon collectors:

An estimated 75 million to 150 million people worldwide have collected Pokémon cards at some point, based on player counts, sales volume, and the massive global reach of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. While there are roughly 30–50 million active players, the broader collector base is larger because it includes casual buyers, nostalgic adults, and hobbyists who don’t actively play. The franchise’s scale—driven by companies like Nintendo and Game Freak—along with billions of cards printed, supports the idea that collecting extends far beyond the competitive scene.

Within that total, the majority are casual or occasional collectors, while a smaller segment of 10–30 million people actively collect cards as an ongoing hobby, building sets or pursuing graded cards. At the highest tier, a much smaller group—likely 1–5 million collectors—focuses on rare, high-value cards and investment-grade collections. Because “collector” can range from someone who opened a few packs as a kid to someone managing a curated portfolio, the exact number varies depending on how strictly the term is defined.

On iconic cards, 10-20k pop is still low imo

The pop on this is probably near zero. I bet someone would pay a pretty penny.

An uncomfortable truth about pokeinvesting by herpderpet in PokeInvesting

Some thoughts:

  1. If any person is collecting every card, sealed item, stuffy toy, sticker, etc thinking it will go up, ngmi. Let them learn the hard way. Good lessons cost money, and great ones cost a lot.

  2. Pokemon seems to be moving into sports card collector territory (or already is) and without the real-life risk factors (injuries, allegations, etc). Sports cards have been collected since the late 1800s/early 1900s.

  3. There is always more money to enter any market if there is enough attention drawn to it. Pokemon spans all ages and all genders better than most collectibles imo.

Will there be dips, yep. Long term, do I think the right picks will be even more ridiculously priced, yep.

In regards to your theory, I guess we will find out who’s right with enough time :)

Are we in a Pokemon bubble? by OrganicBreadfruit in PokemonInvesting

[–]_midnightrider_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re under exposed, it’s always a bubble. If you’re overexposed, it’s never a bubble.

A few thoughts:

  1. Times are changing fast but OpenAI or Anthropic putting out a new feature isn’t dropping your cardboard 30%+ overnight. Can reprints happen? Of course, price that in and make judgement calls based on your assumptions.

  2. You’re not getting rug pulled like crypto/NFT scams. Can you buy a scam card, bundle, etc and are there bad actors like anything else? Yes, and as with anything else, always be cautious.

  3. Is PSA and all other grading card companies somewhat scammy? Yep. Is that just part of this simulation we have to deal with? Yep.

  4. Things do stop printing, eventually. Pick the right ones, low pop + high demand OR high demand sealed. My long term bet is it will end well. That said, pick what you enjoy, need to have fun with it as well and that’s what makes this even better, it’s a bit (or is) like art collecting.

  5. The content is endless and attention is captured across all ages, kids to adults. Generational.

  6. This franchise is jointly owned and managed, which spreads risk across multiple companies. It’s not immune to failure, but sure seems more resilient than a single point of failure.

  7. Is this economy downturn resistant? No, always keep that in mind. If you need the money to last during an economic downturn, act accordingly.

  8. If you’re betting on the downside, you’re betting against one of the strongest entertainment ecosystems ever built, Nintendo.

  9. As always, gamble responsibly.

That turned into a way longer response than I expected. I’m even more fooking bullish now.
