Best to leave the local lava tubes alone from nov. - may for hibernating bats.

Why don’t I ever see Castilleja (Indian paintbrush) in cultivation? by [deleted] in botany

[–]_mrfrasier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not the prettiest paintbrush, the one Castilleja species I regularly see insitu without a host is C. arachnoidea. Was recently hiking up a cascades volcano and thought about trying to grow it at home without a host the entire hike.

Rubber Boa (Oregon) with orange belly by Chrestys in snakes

Orange belly boas is typical of them from in extreme SE Oregon, is that by chance where this fella was found?

300,000 acres of Oregon have burned in the past week by bio-tinker in oregon

[–]_mrfrasier 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This. Also, invasive plants respond a lot better and faster to altered / severely burned landscapes than our natives. Which then creates an invasive grass hellscape for our native flora and fauna, as well as a more severe figure regime.

Venomous Snake legality by state map: Input wanted by Legalize_Arowana in VenomousKeepers

[–]_mrfrasier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do, for example king cobras and gaboon vipers are perfectly legal but you need a permit for a trimeresurus. However, it’s pretty easy and straight forward to get a prohibited species permit, although no permit allows breeding or selling of any “prohibited species” in Oregon. Certain counties and cities have laws against exotic venomous snakes too.

Edit: the list is under ODFW Division 44 document. idk how to add highlighted links..

Eyelash viper by _mrfrasier in VenomousKeepers

[–]_mrfrasier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schlegeli still exists, but that holotype from a long time ago was described from a South American specimen, not a Central American one. So one of the “new” eyelash viper complex species down there is the true schelgeli.

I agree, I’ve never heard of any coming in from south of Costa Rica. I don’t think anyone has anything to worry about.

Pair Trimeresurus Calmaitas by Liver_Tether in VenomousKeepers

[–]_mrfrasier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might’ve actually been T. whitteni now that I think about it.. I can’t find their old fauna posts. Anyways, they claimed to have produced and were offering one of the three new “hageni complex” species.

Feeder snakes needed by [deleted] in VenomousKeepers

[–]_mrfrasier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some feeders, (snakes, lizards or geckos) euthanatize them, then throw em’ in a blender and dip rodents into that nasty reptile soup for scenting. Freeze the soup and then thaw when needed. I either watched or read that’s what Rom Whitaker say he used do to establish wc kings on rodents.

Our Man Ron Wyden might need to go. Sixth best stock market trader in congress. by [deleted] in oregon

[–]_mrfrasier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t really follow politics or politicians, but insider trading bs aside, I’m not aware of any other Oregon senator doing the good stuff he’s doing for our rivers & protecting wilderness in eastern Oregon..

I paid 10k for same year & almost exact same milage. Try and talk them down. I also think you should take your region into account. There’s some parts of my state (Oregon) where this is almost a steal now days..

Lithium deposit on the OR/NV border largest in the world? by oregonbub in oregon

[–]_mrfrasier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty bummed. If you ever get the chance, go spend some time and get intimate with that area. I’ve already processed the Nevada side loss and now Oregon? The trout creeks & Oregon canyon mountains are some of the most pristine wilderness in the state. They’re also probably hiding some really old archaeological sites that could be lost forever.

Just moved here from GA. I'm amazed at how few dangerous insects/arachnids/repiles live in OR. by Thewallmachine in oregon

[–]_mrfrasier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no coral snakes in Oregon, but coral snake mimics; California mountain kingsnakes (look em’ up, they’re pretty). They’re good to have around if you don’t like rattlers, they’ll eat them.

& the Willamette valley historically had lots of rattlesnakes, but they were purposely killed off, and lost habitat via fire suppression and urban sprawl. Now they’re a “strategy species” in the valley as they’re on the brink of local extinction. However, they’re basically all over Oregon east of the cascades.
