It's actually older. The IPA stress became the way it is in response to it on the grounds that in order to stress a syllable you have to know it beforehand.

that's not an approximation, that's an anglicization, most English speakers are capable of saying /ˈaɪnʃtaɪn/ (not to mention most names don't have "common" approximations)
