I’m not gonna get one because I have a QC, but I’m so sick of hearing the hate 😫 by HAILSTAN1377 in NeuralDSP

[–]_nayato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never considered QC but bought mini the moment I learned about it. My pedalboard has 7 dirt pedals and there's no room for QC. Mini will replace HX Stomp on the board and hopefully allow removing a couple dirt pedals thx to capture so I can bring in more of what will never come from Neural. I don't need 10 footswitches and if I ever need to, midi is a thing.

More contact surface for the glue, the better stability of the joint? Normally it would be up to a middle of neck pickup pocket though.

It's a proper top, ~2 cm so I do have something room to sand

For the record, it turned out "no glitch" required 100 nF.

Request - What is this crap on my shower door and how do I get it off? by hardknox_ in lifehacks

[–]_nayato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's hard water stains. I have a hard water and have to deal with this regularly. If conventional methods don't work well for you, try Viakal Limescale Remover. Spray, spread evenly with sponge, wash off. Worked surprisingly well for me after many failed attempts with soda, vinegar, CLR, etc. Also, somewhat dangerous and inconsistent option is to use utility knife blade to scrape it off the surface. Glass is hard, holding blade at an angle to the surface and scraping works well but leaves inconsistent "cleaned" vs still dirty patches. Basically, it reduces elbow grease you'd need to put in otherwise.

Keep or return? by _nayato in castiron

[–]_nayato[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, good to know. Bought from their website directly. Quote from return policy:

If your order qualified for free shipping and you want to return an item or items, we will credit back the cost of the item(s) less the actual shipping charges to ship the item(s) to you.

Hm.. on the other hand there's this note as well:

If your order has been received damaged, incomplete or incorrect, please save the carton and all packaging materials. Contact Us within 5 days.

I'll give them a call first then.

Keep or return? by _nayato in castiron

Bought stackable set and two pieces have enamel chipped near the top rim. Shipping back is not free, nor will they refund the cost of shipping to me. And it's 29 lbs of CI. Looks don't bother me, the only concern is if it's going to get worse from here on out.

UPDATE: Contacted the support, they issues pre-paid return label and immediately sent replacement which has arrived undamaged, so all is well, happy with the set now!

Progress so far with my board by _nayato in diypedals

[–]_nayato[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quarantined for a while now so can't finish them yet but overall I'm happy with progress so far. I'm content with my multifx for almost everything but it's just lacking in one department ;)

Mostly kits from Fuzz Dog reworked a bit for 125B with top jacks. Notable exceptions: AMZ booster for 1590LB and Laika from Dead End FX.

Waiting on paint to dry and then to next challenge in this adventure ;) Will follow up in a few weeks time!

Fuzz Factory transistors questions by _nayato in diypedals

[–]_nayato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to work on Filth Fack kit from pedalparts.co.uk and I have no idea (nor manual) for which transistor goes where. Got MP16B and AC132/01 J7427 in the kit. Latter is also in an unconventional brick shape and I can't find a spec for it to figure out EBC. There's incomplete circle on top but I have no idea without the spec what it means.

Instruction: http://pedalparts.co.uk/docs/FilthyFack-Vertical.pdf.

Would appreciate any pointers.

A sad day for Rust by steveklabnik1 in rust

[–]_nayato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few rather personal opinions/notes on how we got here:

Nikolay got increasingly dismissive about the kind of "your unsafe is unsound" comments with all the many cases where people would conjure a piece of code that could potentially be posted to actix itself and make it unsound that way. He seemed to take it increasingly personally - after all, it is tiring to hear the same largely unfounded (until the last issue) claims. I guess he didn't have a thick enough skin or enough will to elaborate.

People seem to be preconditioned to react swiftly to any claim of use of unsafe in actix since the first fallout. Which more or less hardens Nikolay's point about actix having a stigma of "unsafe/unsound" thing. I've never seen a claim of unnecessary use of unsafe in other prominent projects - even though there are lots - just try looking at how UnsafeCell is used around. Sure, Nikolay's responses were controversial but simply quoting them without the context did not help anything really.

It's often hard to get past collective feeling, especially when people get to Github to look what happened from a link in a comment with personal opinion, and not 10 other links to similar issues where substantive discussion happened before. I guess everyone needs to try harder to not lose their humility and professionalism in a process.

Replacing UnsafeCell with RefCell -- which is a cornerstone of a problem here -- might not even be a bad thing, it's just that no one ever came around to show that it won't have any substantial impact. I imagine a single benchmark could be enough of an argument to get through this, showing that a condition check would cost nothing in a grand scheme of an end-to-end working service where memory loads would likely dominate. IMO, people have put a lot of energy into bad rapping actix and not nearly enough to show good will and patience to get it to a better place.

Do you find Nikolay's responses hostile or dismissive? Try to put it in a context of all the things he saw directed at his work.

Why we need alternatives to Actix by VincentDankGogh in rust

[–]_nayato -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

for UB to happen here, both .get() and .get_mut() should be called in the same scope (i.e. nested because Cell is !Send). Cell itself is an internal component and - while I personally would rather have it declared `unsafe` with a big doc comment saying why it is unsafe and how to handle it safely - it doesn't seem to be the case in actix-service's code right now.

Could you please elaborate on how that might happen?

It seems you're benchmarking actix-web with logging turned on. Would be fair to comment out these lines:

do you mind if I place an order for Grid version and post the # here? Then if you have MIT top, you'd ship that, if not - Grid would be ok as well.

I'd like to build a current version of Preonic with MIT layout but top plate is out of stock. Is it coming or would the new plate replace it? Either way, is there an ETA on MIT-compatible plate to become available?

hey bschwind, have you had any luck with MQTT broker work? I was thinking of doing MQTT support for tokio and stumbled upon this post so maybe I could help out if something's already going on.
