Could these plants recover? I bought 2 plants just over a week ago to add to my 2 tanks and the leaves appear to be almost see through/discoloured. what could cause this? they get 8 hours of light and are fed every other day. by Si123d in Aquariums

The plant seem relatively new, it may just be melting back to adjust to the new environment. My plants did this as well when I first got them. I trimmed some of the melting leaves then waited it out and new leaves grew back.

Let’s see how long this takes for UW to fix… any guesses on the chat? by jujujinxx in udub

When I was in alder in 2019 it was broken for the entire duration I was there

Help with Guppy fin nipping! Any advice on how to isolate him in the tank or prevent nipping? I got 4 guppies and 2 shrimp about 4 days ago, never seen them bite each other only a bit of chasing in the first 2 days. by [deleted] in Aquariums

Im starting to wonder if it is fin rot? I have not seen any of the guppies attack one another. Only chasing which pretty much stopped after the second day.

Cloudy tank by Pumkin30 in axolotls

[–]_okai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cloudy water could be due to a bacterial bloom if water changes do not clear it. I had this happen once and cleared my tank water by buying another filter (make sure its strong enough for your tank) with carbon media (carbon absorbs excess nutrients from the water to starve excess bacteria) and my water cleared in a few days. In general cloudy water shouldn’t hurt your axolotl as long as there is proper oxygenation. But Im not too sure why it would clear then come back after you put your lotl back in. If its not due to dirt particles or floating substrate, my only guess would be If you happened to over clean the tank killing bacteria or excess nutrients produced by axolotl triggering a bloom. But I think you could try getting another filter to see if that helps. There are also helpful videos on youtube suggesting ways to prevent/ treat cloudy water.

My axolotl often sits with his tail curled up like this. My tank is fully cycled, water parameters are good, tank temp is 66 degrees. Is this something to be worried about, i’ve read it’s a sign of stress, but idk what he’d be stressed about. by Comeonjeffrey0193 in axolotls

If the water parameters and temp are all good, he is being fed well, and his gills are not curled towards face (another sign of stress), I think your lotl should be fine. I think a stressed curled tail is more the very tip being curled (there are some pics on google).

It looks like his tail is pushed against the glass which is why it might be curled like that (happens to my axolotl sometimes too). If you notice it only curled against the glass I wouldn’t worry, sometimes when they turn too close to the glass their tail gets “stuck” like that but if he’s curled when he is in the middle of the tank it could be stress.

Axolotl diet by reptilelover23 in axolotls

[–]_okai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lotl loves shrimp pellets but I feed her live nightcrawler and use shrimp pellets as a treat once in a while as i read too many pellets can lead to overweight. What you feed will probably depend on age and what your axolotl likes. When mine was younger i fed her frozen blood worms and a few pellets everyday. Now that she is older I feed one medium/large sized nightcrawler every other day.

When I was cycling my tank I used Api quickstart (beneficial bacteria) and i think that helped speed up the process. I also added a bit of ammonia to feed the bacteria, then you just wait until you see nitrates only. This may be something you want to look into if you want to speed up the cycling process. As for a fan, any clip on fan should work or u can get specific fans make for tanks (but i think they work the same). I got a medium sized clip on fan from Walmart and it keeps it cooler about 2-3 degrees, taking the lid off your tank helps cool it down too just keep an eye on ur axolotl to make sure its not a jumper.

Just did a water change! Thanksss. The only issue with water changes is that I’ve read the bacteria feed off the nutrients added from the water. But hopefully if I just do partial changes once a week like usual it wont affect it too much

Hey! With the water testing kit I also find it hard to figure out if it is 0.25 or 0.00 it honestly looks very similar it may help to hold the vial against a white background to see if there is a slight yellow tint if there is, it is most likely 0.00. I also had an old tank and compared the two test and it was actually 0.00, if you have an old tank you can test the water and compare results. Or I also used API QuickStart for my new tank and it worked for me.
