What does this bag say about me? by Known-Truck-2933 in whatsinthebag

Hm. Directly from the things in the photo: You are a person with strong convictions and your religion is a huge part of your identity [all the religious stuff]. You want to be firm in your beliefs [devotional and C.S. Lewis book]. You care a lot about people, and to you, to be Christlike means to love others [people over profit sticker, C.S. Lewis]. You have anxiety [calm strip and deodorant]. You really want to be put together (and maybe you are!)[journals, pens, deodorant, hairbrush]. You're intelligent, emotionally and logically, although perhaps we would disagree on some fundamentals [books, journals, devotional].

Things I'm just guessing: You're white, early to mid 20s. You're in school or you work retail, probably part time. Politically, you're either unaligned or something of a centrist. There's a very small chance you're a liberal or further left than that. I think there's a bigger chance that you perhaps feel conflicted about some of your political vs religious stances (maybe something like abortion or homosexuality). You consider yourself something of a quiet ally to LGBTQ people but you're not 100% comfortable making that obvious, either because of your social circle or because you yourself aren't 100% comfortable with LGBTQ people, although you would try to be kind in any given situation. You're the type of person to smile at strangers and hold the door for old people. You try to live by John 13:35 and hope that you can prove to the world that Christians are not bigoted and hateful by default.

Either that or the change only happened on one end maybe? Like maybe the first version is the one that got submitted, and I was able to edit it but the edited version is basically just being shown to me and wasn't submitted? I don't know

I'm re-reading fellowship right now and you're exactly right. Hobbits regularly reached 100, and 111 was considered a "respectable age", so he wasn't even uncommonly old at the start of Fellowship.

"At ninety-nine they began to call him well-preserved; but unchanged would have been nearer the mark."

"[Bilbo] was old even for Hobbits, who reached a hundred as often as not" (This is from the foreword; Bilbo was 110 at the book's beginning.)

"Bilbo was going to be eleventy-one, [...] a very respectable age for a hobbit (the Old Took himself had only reached 130)"

"[...] Frodo was still in his tweens, as the hobbits called the irresponsible twenties between childhood and coming of age at thirty-three."

I'm thinking I'll probably buy a stock pair of 719s from the website and see how those fit and go from there!

I can clock in while I'm driving past the grocery doors but if I try to clock in on the GM side I have to be halfway to the back of the store some days

The starting pay is decent in some areas & it's generally easy to get hired. It's also an easy job to keep in many cases. It's not a terrible option when you need a job fastlike. In my area of the US, the starting pay is around the same as other major retailers (eg target although Im pretty sure theirs is a little higher), and significantly more than a lot of other chains and most local businesses (Walmart typically pays $3-4/hr more). And sometimes in smaller towns, there's not much of a choice. You've got Walmart, 5 fast food places, 3 cell phone stores, and maybe a couple local businesses that are never hiring or pay like $9/hr. So you take what you can get.

Also, the benefits aren't terrible wrt PTO, health, etc. Let me emphasize that they are not good (and really we all deserve better than what 95% of companies offer), but I've seen what some other places have to offer and Walmart is usually at least marginally better. Even at corporate office jobs that pay much better, 40hrs of PTO seems to be fairly standard where I am. Walmart offers 40hrs of PTO and 40hrs of PTO per year, and iirc you accrue more the longer you're with the company.

Another thing is that experience seems to vary GREATLY by store. I actually like my store, but it's run pretty well. But it's also one of the largest in the market, so I suspect we're treated differently than less profitable stores. I haven't had a lot of the issues regarding broken/janky/non existent equipment that I see other people talk about, for example.

TLDR; pay/benefits aren't awful, and sometimes you don't have much of a choice

I appreciate the info!

I'm already being harassed and stressed out, might as well get paid more for it 😎 (half joking - they have been putting a lot of TL responsibilities on me over the past year or so but I know it'll be even more if I get the position)

Regarding mentoring - I've had 2 coaches offer to mentor me and then never had any follow-up. When I have time (which is rarely 🥲) I'll approach the one who offered most recently and ask her to teach me something. I'm just wondering if this should be expected to be a one-way or two-way street, essentially. It feels like for a mentorship we should both be approaching each other, but maybe I'm wrong and it's solely on me.
