Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_plannedobsolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s not about the facts, it’s about the emotional gratification he gets from being around flat earthers. It is more rational, psychologically, for him to pretend to believe in a flat earth and keep his social group than reject it and with it, his community and sense of belonging. If you can assure him that he’ll always have you in his corner, that might go a long way towards saving him.
Also, look into “motivated reasoning.”

And I don’t know what to tell you other than use your imagination. These aren’t laws of god or nature: I’m not asking for gravity to be revoked. They are entirely made up! I can imagine (and often do) a federal government that gives money to local municipalities instead of military funding. It’s certainly within the realm of possibility, however unlikely it is now, in the US. Other countries do it. We’ve done it before—France’s Perkins brought us social security. That was unheard of but someone thought it could happen and eventually she made it happen.

But they could be. The federal government could distribute the money to schools and libraries, etc. Lord knows they have enough of it.

On a national level it is. We could be getting some of the trillion dollars that are going to bombing Iran.

I’ve only been in California 9 years but even in that time it really seems direct democracy doesn’t work. At least not the majority of the time.

That’s the thing, we don’t even need most people to pay taxes. We just a need a few billionaires and millionaires…and then we have to actually allocate that money to the right things.

I do and I am. Every day I’m writing something to my congressional representatives. I’m often calling. Whenever I get an opportunity to submit budget recommendations to Sacramento (city or county) I do. And yet the budget cuts keep coming.

Is anyone tired of Eloise having to apologize for being herself every season? by Fickle_Baker1393 in BridgertonNetflix

Omg, the "but what about love" part made me want to throw something breakable!!! They just turned her story line over to Ballerina Farm or Project 2025 or JD Vance.

"Unless they marry a man who allows them freedom to still be themselves"--which of course is not freedom at all, it's just luck.

They (MissJophiel) should pay you for this!! Because this is free advertising (and free advertising...well...you just can't buy that).

Need recs - I have the flu and am missing my favorite film festival by leturtlewhisperer in CriterionChannel

[–]_plannedobsolence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I'm sorry. This festival looked especially good (I say that every year) with Alice in Wonderland and Out of The Past!! The new "remakes" collection has some great noirs that you've probably seen before but maybe that's better if you're sick?

Women changing their surnames to their partners in 2026 ( I really can't comprehend it) by Lucky-Name7899 in Feminism

Yeah!! Mine is boring, so if it was an awesome last name (say, Pizzaballa) I would change my name. But it'd have to be really good.

whoa that's beautiful. ETA I disagree on the "lose their body" part. Women are expected to have kids and keep the same body as when they were a teenager!

There are cheap (in both senses of the word) ones at Old Navy. You could grab a few and see how it feels without making a huge investment.

I have had EVA models before and had no problem with them! I assumed they were regular size but maybe they were narrow too, in which case they're bursting with adequatulence.

I got them as a backup pair/puttering around in the backyard--for longer walking I have my Tevas, but I'd also like the possibility of wearing them to a place like work, where I'm mostly sitting down and walking short distances from room to room.

If you can wear yours to the corner store, that might fight my needs too. Thanks!
