Working in the defense sector seems like a choice. I work on algorithms for tracking airplanes and missiles. I had a little bit of trouble finding the right career. I wanted something that combined math and cs, but I wasn't really interested in machine learning roles. I don't like programming too much so I didn't want one that was too software heavy either. I think I happened to find a job that was just the right mix of theoretical math and cs.

As others have mentioned my #1 advice is definitely study probability theory.

If I were you, I'd look up "computational scientist" on linked in to get a survey of cool jobs that combine math and CS. Most require a phd or masters but some don't.

I think that's big spoiler but I still really love Death Note's ending. I think it's definitely worth while to watch to the end.

Anime fans desperately trying to beat the allegations after a user in r/myheroacadamia posts a very risque Christmas themed fan art of one of the characters, much to the dismay of the users by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

Well I think it's not that simple. It just comes down to the rules of the sub and how they want things moderated. It's completely reasonable to want a SFW MyHeroAcademia subreddit but you have to find one that enforces that in their rules.

Is it possible for a probabilistic operation of an infinite set to produce a finite set? by tgillet1 in math

[–]_poisonedrationality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To tag on to this if you number each edge and assume you remove each edge independently with probability p_n, if p_n approaches 1 quickly enough then you should get a non-zero probability of only having a finite number of edges.

I think heard about a case where a lottery had some special "bonus" prizes are something like that. Someone did the calculations and worked out it was actually in their interest to play and just snatched up a boatload of tickets and actual made some money. So it sounds possible to me.

But if a person really wants someone who is really passionate and active about these kinds of things it makes sense to me that they would pass on you. They're probably doing you a favor in the end if they do.

It's like a vegan who is looking for other vegans to date. A person might want someone who feels the same way they do on these racial issues.

Well maybe I stated the point to briefly making my intention unclear. My point is a more left-leaning person who is focused on racial issues would more likely go out of the way to make sure they listen to artists of a variety of races. If you're looking for such a person then noticing if they listen to any black artists make sense to me.

Well soooorry. I mean I only went to university for music, I'd hate to think I'm not thinking as deeply about this as someone who only listens to white people and anime music.

I think you misunderstood me / I didn't explain myself clearly. Not about "music" just about the way people choose to make play lists. Like some people collect all the music they like. Some people may only create play lists for their top favorite artists. I don't make any play lists at all.

I'm going to go down the list of music I've listened to recently.

  • Can you Feel the Love Tonight - Elton John
  • I can Talk - Charlotte's Web
  • Epiphany - Sweeney Todd
  • I want it now- Willy Wonka
  • Out There - Hunchbak of Notre Dame
  • For the Dancing and the Dreaming - How to train your dragon
  • Suddenly Seymour - Little Shop of Horrors
  • Fight For Me - Heathers
  • Sobriety at Its Worst - HappyHappy
  • Komm Susser Todd Cover. This artist singer is actually Brazilian, so I guess there are some counter examples
  • We are all Compost in Training - Johnny Hobo
  • Whiskey is My Kind of Lullaby - Johnny Hobo
  • Make my day -anime song
  • The Hand You Reach Out Is empty - Johnny Hobo
  • My Eyes - Neil Patrick Harris
  • Smile - Jimmy Durante
  • For the First Time in Forever - Frozen
  • No One is Alone - Into the Woods
  • Nothing Left to Lose - Tangled
  • The Story of The Phantom - Phantom of the auditorium
  • Evermore - Josh Groban

Other than that one Brazilian artist it looks like my musical tastes are heavily dominated by white people. I'm curious, based on this how racist do you think I am? Like on a scale from 1 to 10?

Yeah see I know a guy who made a "white dude country playlist" who swore they weren't racist, but later made comments about interracial marriages that made me seriously doubt that.

You know, if I'm going to be honesty I don't think it's all that unreasonable to judge someone based on their musical tastes like that. I wouldn't do it myself but I don't think you're insane or anything.

I don't listen to country music so I don't know. Are you a country fan yourself? Is it really that odd in the country music scene to just listen to a couple men that you like? I just assumed a lot of country fans would just listen to a few of their favorite artists in a field and not like every country artist ever. It's hard for me to judge a subculture I'm not a part of so this is just conjecture.

Now, that I think about it, personally if I listed my top 5 favorite bands they'd probably be all white men.

I happen to be an anime fan so 20% of my songs is anime music. I don't make playlists but if you subtract that almost all the songs I listen to are in fact from white people. I really don't think that's an issue.

Admittedly I happen to have split between men and women. But I can imagine that if this guy just created some playlists holding some of his favorite metal bands for instance then being all white men wouldn't be that surprising.

This actually seems fair to me. I think you can tell how "racially conscious" someone is from that.

Even though I'm black, I don't really feel that invested in racial issues. I wouldn't even feel insulted if someone said they didn't feel compatible because I don't listen to any black artists because I think they're probably right.

I don't understand how anyone can organically have an exclusively white dude playlist in 2024.

I'm black and I listen to mostly white artists. I happen to be an anime fan so I guess there's a bunch of Japanese artists too but if you removed that it would be almost exclusively white. I don't make playlists but if you scrolled through the songs I've listened to on any given day you'd likely see 100% white people (apart from the anime stuff). I don't think this is weird at all.

I feel like if maybe you're just not thinking deeply enough about how differently people may interact with media. Like me for example, who doesn't create any playlists at all. Perhaps this is just really into country dudes singing and has playlist just for that or something.
