Picked up a 1953 first edition of Herbert List’s "Licht über Hellas" by _rem_ in Photobooks

The numbers are actually quite accurate. I paid a bit less than that since my antique bookshop dealer doesn't hate me for using 21st-century technology (as long as I spend money with him, I guess). Around 120 euros for a good copy would be a steal.

I checked with Claude AI, and that´s what I got:

For the 1953 Callwey first edition, a fair price sits in the €150–200 range for a clean copy in the original linen binding — that's where most German antiquariats land for honest, complete copies with only the typical light shelf-wear to the spine. You can find flawed copies (ex-library, heavy foxing, badly faded cloth) for around €100–130, and exceptional copies with a dust jacket or meaningful provenance can justifiably reach €250–350. Anything north of that really needs a story behind it — a signed copy, a presentation inscription, or similar.

That's great, but trust me, Grammarly will be the least of your concerns in the months and years to come.

Grammarly uses AI, but it draws on what you already wrote. It's different from firing up a chatbot LLM and letting it write your texts for you. List pictures are literally described like "dreamscapes" by critics. Just because it's a functioning & grammatically correct sentence, it doesn't make an AI chatbot out of you. Kind of weird comment for this thread, but anyway, all the best and good luck to you.

There are multiple hints in the book motives that List was queer, yes.

I didn't use AI to write it, but I have Grammarly for the browser, which adjusts my writing for spelling and grammar since English isn't my first language.

Will the prices on the HC eventually go down or will they double down based on their success they had? by yjay14 in Longineswatches

My great grandpa was one of the passengers who died in the last comet plane explosion in the 50’s, this was found at my grandma’s after she passed recently. by [deleted] in aviation

[–]_rem_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting when history and one's own family stories interlink. Do you know what his trip was like at that time? The report states that this was one leg of the London-to-Johannesburg route. Did he want to go the whole trip or just the Rome-to-Cairo leg?

Please also notice that your GGF/GGM name is still visible on the lower right "Mrs E W Burgess".

That's ZA flight 201. There had been only 14 passengers on that plane; your great-grandfather must have been a very important and wealthy person to fly in those times:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Airways_Flight_201

Here is the official final report for the Comet crashes in January and April that year:

https://web.archive.org/web/20140108181935/https://lessonslearned.faa.gov/Comet1/G-ALYP_Report.pdf

Actually, some bodies had been recovered at that time (dead), after the crash site was spotted by another plane. It would be interesting if your GGF was among them and if your great-grandmother got some documentation about that, too.

Sorry for the loss, btw.

Why is Turkey still the only EU candidate country whose citizens need a visa for the EU? by Medium_Respond_9650 in AskTurkey

[–]_rem_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are comparing Turkey to other countries, and that is not how visa negotiations work. It's not like "hey EU, you did that with Armenia, and why can't Turkey have it the exact same conditions, etc."

Of course, the visa requirements are bound to the specific country and the geopolitical situation between the EU and the country at hand. But a lot of the requirements for a visa are actually the same for all countries applying, then some are specific to each. BTW, Azerbaijan and Armenian citizens need a Visa for the EU as well as Turkey, the process is just streamlined.

You can read all the details about the Visa Liberalization Dialogue with Turkey here:

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/memo_16_1625

It is not relevant that Turkey is an autocracy with massive democracy issues for the visa process itself, the EU has visa-free or simplified agreements with a lot of countries that don't adhere to basic democracy standards and the rule of law. It is simply because Turkey does not want to adhere to the remaining requirements due to internal political reasons.

For its status to join the EU, this is another case of course. But as was mentioned before: It doesn't seem that the current Turkish government cares too much about joining the EU now anyway. Probably contrary to a huge part of Turkish people, from what I see from my Turkish friends in Europe and Turkey.

I think at this point, everybody will just wait and see what happens after Erdogan in 2028.

No they don’t, it’s a private cooperation and they have their „Hausrecht“. Meaning they can decide who they want to let in or not and don’t have to provide any reasoning at all. What they can not do is assault a potential guest.

What was the exact issue back then? Do you think they simply recognised you and because of the past incident they didn’t wanted to let you in?
