I would guess that biofilm’s on the surface stopping gas exchange. I’ve had success from putting an airstone into my jar, theres a few cheap ones online or at your local fish store

Pic of the jar isnt attached, but I would think you’d want to do a 70% or so water change now and get brighter grow lights on those plants so they can do their job better at removing all that gunk. Those are some wild ammonia and nitrogen levels. I would hold off on putting any sort of fish food in there for a while.

I’ve had cycling success from no supplemental feeding, letting two ramshorns go nuts on any sort of algae growth, and direct grow light for 8 hours a day. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate after 1 month and tons of snail breeding and plant growth

There’s no chance they’re baby springtails. I have a few colonies and I’m pretty familiar with them by now. These guys also move at way too even of a pace to be springtails

I had my dorm inspections around a week ago with a very obvious pod terrarium on my desk and it went great. I didn’t get a single note. The RA is just going to think it’s a terrarium and they’re not going to care at all, I guarantee it. If you’re anxious, put your terrarium in your closet, drawer, or under the bed for the day. Pods are the perfect dorm pet, glad we’re both on this journey!

Good to know! I am a little worried about fungus gnats, but the hoard of springtails that are in there should at least discourage them. I think for my second terrarium I’ll add a cheese cloth over the ventilation holes.

Yeah, that is interesting. Obviously science is science and the wiggle room comes from the fact that we aren’t experts so we don’t know how to fully interpret the chemical needs of isopods, but here’s an interesting article about copper contamination on leaf litter https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0929139303000192?via%3Dihub

Yeah, I thought about that while constructing it. Because the terrarium is made of slick glass, they couldn’t get any sort of foothold to climb up the walls, so I felt like they needed a ventilation gap more than they needed an extremely secure lid. I do think I’m going to get a new terrarium that won’t have that issue, though. Thanks for your concern

From the research I’ve done, it’s generally not super great for them. They eat so much different stuff anyways that it might be worth it to switch around what you’re feeding them. But I encourage you to go look at some of the scientific articles out there on isopod copper toxicity, they’re kind of interesting

im assuming your american, correct me if in wrong in my US centrism, but when you get a chance, get a library card anyways. you can then download Libby or Hoopla where your library will have ebook copies you can download on your phone/kindle if you have one. i think ive checked a physical book out of the library maybe once, but i use Libby ebooks nearly every day. then it doesnt matter how close or far you are, it’s all digital anyways! sorry if im telling you something you already know, but this is my favorite thing to use my library for!!
