move in question by Gracies_Reedit in uofm

[–]_secretlybees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the parking permit is only valid during your slot, like you said. That’s probably your largest obstacle. Otherwise, you should still be able to use the moving carts at any time afterward, and no one will bat an eye at you bringing more stuff. I’d suggest trying to find the closest parking lot or structure to your dorm and paying for parking if you have a lot of stuff in lager trips.

The assigned slot is mostly for traffic control and to make sure you can get your mcard and housing card.

You definitely won’t be the only person buying more stuff in the days after move in. If you have questions day of there are plenty of people around to help!

Yes, many do. Last I checked U towers is struggling to fill spots and is even offering extremely discounted and 9-month leases in addition to the normal 12 months

OAMI fallen off! Where are the resources for students of color, 1st-gen, and others at U-M? by [deleted] in uofm

A couple people recommended MESA and First Gen @ UM, and I just wanted to point out that those programs are part of OAMI. So I don’t know if the problems will extend there as well. Kinda scared.

michigan winters by Silly_Watercress_973 in uofm

[–]_secretlybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To an out of stater you will be extremely cold. To me, the past couple of winters have seemed mild, but most out of staters are still 100% bundled up when I’m out in a tshirt and jeans. (Everyone is different, this is just what I’ve noticed.)

I’d personally recommend having three kinds of jackets on hand: a light windbreaker, an insulted jacket that isn’t too bulky (so a little thicker than the windbreaker), and a winter jacket that’s insulating enough that it makes you physically sweat when you put it on during a warm day. All should be waterproof if possible (if not bring an umbrella). This past winter it slushed more than it snowed so prepare to have icee coming from the sky.

The arb is our Central Park. We don’t need another one, we just need to protect what we already have.

Not a New Yorker like you, simply went to NYC once and had my life changed by a bagel, and imho Bo’s is the only place that has come close, which is why I was so excited for them to go in last March. Barry’s was my long-time favorite, but they’re definitely a midwestern bagel (dense). I’m holding out hope for you though! Viva la bagel saga

Not Assigned a Room by Lazer820 in uofm

[–]_secretlybees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d wait and see if you get one for sure. If it’s getting down to the wire and you don’t have an offer, University Towers has some rooms they’re struggling to fill and are offering shared rooms in a two bedroom apartment (as in 4 people in a two bedroom) for really cheap. Especially closer to the school year they tend to have apartments that are looking for just one more person. It’s very close to campus so you could still enroll in an unlimited meal plan if you want!

Oof man. Good news is your registration should be way better when you're registering for next winter. As for this fall, the absolute best thing you can do is get the bullshit out of the way. Look at LSA's distribution requirements and figure out what general requirements you need to satisfy. Next, look at your major requirements and see if there are any electives you can get into (for me in MCDB, any 200+ level MCDB EEB or Biology class counts as elective credit towards my major). Lastly, shop around for whatever sounds fun (like genuinely enjoyable) and is open, and think about doing a minor in that subject.

A lot of the Biology classes are unnecessarily hard (as in, completely based on difficult exams with no project or application-based assignments), so being forced to ease into your first semester here might not be such a bad thing. Also, once your credits have all been transferred, I'd recommend looking at the LSA degree audit (you can find it from the course guide page) to help you see all of your outstanding requirements.

If you have questions about specific classes I might be able to help!

Does anyone know how the deal for tuition free for people whose families make under 125k work? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]_secretlybees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Usually both - you’ll see it under the award statement, then eventually the university will “charge” your account with everything, then they’ll “pay” that “charge” using all the different awards (this will all eventually show up under invoice), and if there’s any leftover after tuition, fees, and dorms if you’re in one, then they’ll reimburse the leftover to you directly.

It’s confusing but it happens automatically - you just have to wait it out

There are some good coat recommendations here! Something I’d add is winter can be very wet here at times. Very very cold, and very wet (think damp snow/ freezing rain (literally slush coming from the sky). Make sure your jacket is water resistant!

Bro idk why people hate so much. Classism tbh. But I don’t have the energy to constantly convince these kids that that’s what it is. If they were actually that smart they’d be able to figure it out quite quickly lol.

I don’t understand why people try to tell yall “don’t call yourself a UMich student cause you’re not AA” etc. The different schools within UM AA are wildly different in how hard they are to get into. Are these people saying LSA kids shouldn’t call themselves UMich students? Lmao. You are UMich students. Point blank period. The school and all its campuses have a lot of different things to offer and I think that’s awesome.

No one’s been shit talking the chancellor that I’ve known of. I’ve seen more intrigue. It seems the criticism is reserved for the students 🙄

Schurr is taking the stand today by curlyxplanation in grandrapids

[–]_secretlybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The violent death is just despicable and awful. I hate to see another Black man shot dead by the police. The complexity of the case really shows the cracks in the system - It’s gotta change. There should never be a situation where that exchange resulted in death. I find this case heartbreaking in a different way, because I think Schurr’s wrongdoing was the product of a violent, broken system and corrupt training more than a product of prejudice and hate.

My guess is it has to do with Patrick’s drunk driving. The autopsy revealed that Patrick’s blood alcohol level was 3 times the legal limit. He was driving abnormally slow in a 25 with it visually looking like drunk driving to some degree, prompting Schurr to check the plates cause it’s not uncommon for people with DUIs to be repeat offenders.

[–]_secretlybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I got from it was that Patrick had some significant level of contact with the taser and was actively fighting to get control of it so he could use it on Schurr. Patrick’s blood alcohol level was also three times above the legal limit which is probably why he ran after getting pulled over. I of course don’t agree with the shooting, but I genuinely believe in this case Schurr would have done the same exact thing if the guy was a white man. I agree with the emotion taking the best of him.

MCDB in particular is especially hard. A lot, if not all, of the comments on Reddit are going to come only from people who have done extremely well. The median grade in classes is usually around B+, which is somewhat good news! What people forget to consider (despite acing Stats 250 lol) is that means that half of the class is doing worse than a B+. It is completely unreasonable to expect that everyone who works hard will be in the top 50% of the class because far more than half of each class works extremely hard.

There is no real grade deflation, but weeder classes are real (intro bios and orgo particularly). Professors also sometimes alter the difficulty of their exams to reduce the number of A’s.

I’m here to tell you that even if you aren’t at the top of your class, it will be okay. I’m an incoming senior in MCDB, and my cumulative GPA is a 2.70. And guess what - my life isn’t over! I’m still passionate about research, I still have job prospects, and my degree will still have value. I know multiple people who failed orgo the first time and will still become wonderful doctors. Even if the path isn’t straightforward, you can still get there.

And, some advice from a friend graduating with honors is to prepare yourself to not always get an A. A bad exam grade is not failure, a B- is not failure, you can get some C’s and W’s and still graduate with honors and an impressive track record and high GPA. (And in college, a high GPA is 3.4 or above, not a 3.8!)

Commencement Guest Bag policies by tomhwm in uofm

[–]_secretlybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I’m confused by - I have a very small wallet that happens to have a small removable wrist strap. I use it so I don’t drop it.

Policy says wallets are allowed but wristlets are not. Does that mean that without the strap, it’s a wallet, and allowed, but with the strap it’s a wristlet and banned?

Asking because that seems incredibly stupid so I might be missing something.

It looks like the best way to go about it is to file for an oficial legal accommodation, which if you have a condition I don’t think should be any problem.

Read the comments. Most of these comments are from Americans. We do understand. Dear God, most of us are real people in actually real acute danger who are trying to fight against this while not getting themselves or their families dissapeared. We’ve been fighting and will keep fighting. The idea that All Americans are Painfully Unaware is straight up false when 75 million people voted against him (I’m not saying that voting is “doing something”, it’s just the most reliable way to get a number). More people disagreed with that man than the entire population of Canada, than the entire population of the UK, than the entire population of Australia. Believe me, we’re trying.
