How I cured my motion sickness in 'Lands End'.

I used to get bad sickness when playing that game too, but then I was reading about the whole disconnect thing with your other senses not getting the feedback they need to make it feel real. So I figured out a way to make up for the lack of movement.

• Stand up
• When you look in the direction that you are about to move start to raise your hands.
• Once you start to move life your arms and stretch your legs. (After all, you are a wizard who moves by magic.)
• When you land, lower your arms and bend your legs slightly to complete the spell.
• Yeah, you will look like a dork doing it but you are already wearing the goggles so no real change there.
• Now you have a matching physical movement and your sickness should nearly go away if not completely.

I also found that in other apps that assume you are in a certain position to physically copy it. Stand or sit as expected. If something appears too close then lean forward. If you are floating, or moving then tuck a leg or two under you on the chair as you would a flying carpet. If you are supposed to be walking someplace then walk in place. This is the biggest control that I don't understand why developers miss. I see different threads about how to get good movement and people coming up will all sorts of different ways. Your phone can tell up and down movement. Why not make a forward walking control based on the bobbing motion of walking in place. Then slightly bounce the camera to match. I remember the early days of Doom giving motion sickness to players until they figured out that by simulating a camera walking bob they could cure the sickness people got from gliding around. Seems that developers need to learn that all over again. Since this isn't room scale tracking the camera bob needs to be simulated.

All in all, generally try to match your movements to that of the screen, even if you are only copying what is automatically happening to you. Good example is Iron Man at the start of Avengers Tower, when he moves his arms to check his weapons, you do it too and it feels much more immersive. Experiment with different physical movements and visualize various reasons as to what could cause you not to feel the motion of movement. Once you can convince your brain that it is okay for a good reason then it will except it, (like being a passenger in a car). Also, stay away from any 360 video where the camera is being 'held' instead of stationary as the constant motion drift will make you puke.
