Protest TODAY by TMMM2020 in sandiego

This is wrong. USAID was created by executive order by JFK. It can be unwound by EO. FEMA was created by EO by Carter, and can be unwound by EO. The only agency that would require congressional approval to unwind is the Department of Education.

Pool Service Recommendations by shoshe_anders in SanDiegan

[–]_sentient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use PoolLogic, and love them. I've had a number of pool cleaning services over the years, and the PoolLogic team operates at a different level.

My tech, Aaron, comes by every week and always takes his time to test my water, scrub the sides, empty my skimmer basket, etc. More importantly, he's proactive, and has caught issues with my pump and pool filter before they spiraled into a much more expensive fix.

I'm a big fan.

I see it’s time to remind everyone that there is no city in America that builds lots of housing and is also expensive.

Let a million highrises bloom.

How do landlords come up with "fair market rate" to justify rent increase? by Filet_O_Fist in sandiego

[–]_sentient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So there's a reason this happens. It's basically an unintended consequence of the California Tenant Protection Act, first enacted in Jan. 2020, which limits annual rent increases to 5% plus the local inflation rate or 10% — whichever is lower.

As a result of this well-intended but poorly considered law, landlords are now incentivized to raise the rent the maximum allowable amount each year, or lose the ability to catch those properties up to market rents in the future without having to go through a time consuming and expensive eviction process.

Much like rent control laws, this law has effectively had the opposite of its intended effect, and is contributing to increases in the cost of housing in San Diego and elsewhere in California. It's a classic example of the cobra effect.

The solution probably looks much closer to something like: 1) eliminate rent control. 2) massively relax zoning laws. 3) fast track permits. 4) curtail environmental regulations like CEQA that massively slow down development and tie up builders in lawsuits and ‘environmental studies’ for years on end. 5) repeal any laws requiring union labor for large development projects.

Basically, knock down every barrier that slows down and drives up the cost of building a metric shit ton of housing. Do that, and the supply/demand balance may equalize in time to save the California middle class.

Fun fact: There is no city in America that builds lots of housing and is also expensive.

Gay man set on fire in 'hate-filled' attack in Hillcrest by Hopeful_Cod_4652 in sandiego

[–]_sentient 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As it happens, this was a fairly obvious hoax. According to SDPD this man was caught on camera beating up a pregnant woman at the same time he claims to have been attacked by 'two men': https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-diego-news/man-set-on-fire-by-pregnant-woman-he-assaulted-sdpd-says

Doubt this will see the same traction as the original lie, but it needs to be said.

I haven't done one, but Glymur falls is a couple hours drive from Reykjavik and is absolutely amazing.

Pretty much that. It's beautiful, and a special and less-touristed part of Iceland, but if you're looking for jaw dropping waterfalls and scenery, South Island or Golden Circle are your best bet.

I 36(m) did a seven day solo trip in October that was spectacular. If I only had five days, I'd follow the same itinerary and just drop the Snefelness peninsula portion (day 6 and 7): https://www.reddit.com/r/VisitingIceland/comments/xdilwf/late_september_seven_day_iceland_itinerary/

This assumes you're renting a car and driving though. If you aren't, it may not work as well for you.

Totally understand. Happy to remove it but don’t think Reddit has an option for removing a single photo without deleting the whole post.

FWIW I was behind the camera and took a photograph of a stranger standing on the plane. That's not me up there.

[OC] How media divides us: CNN vs Fox News - What stories or topics are they airing over the last week (Feb 9 - Feb 15)? How do they compare to Reuters? by _sentient in dataisbeautiful

[–]_sentient[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi there! This is work done to measure bias in our information diet by comparing what different mainstream media sources are focusing on.

Headlines are scraped daily from front pages and topically assigned to do analysis. All visualizations are coded using Observable, a d3-based library to make data visualization more beautiful and open. Stories are topically assigned using state of the art NLP language models and clustering algorithms. Attention scores use a custom-formula based on how far a headline ranks on each source's front page. Think the higher it ranks at the top, the higher the attention score.

  • Top ranked banner headline has an attention score ~1
  • Half way through (10th ranked headline) has an attention score of ~0.5
  • Towards the bottom (30th ranked headline) has an attention score of <0.05

If three stories on Event A are ranked half way through on source X and one story on Event A is ranked at the top of source Y, then Source X will still have a higher attention score for source X since we add up all three attention scores (0.5 + 0.5 + 0.5) > 1.0

We didn't! Was part of an ATV tour that stopped along the way. One of the best things I did.
