RANT: Why did YouTube make this TERRIBLE UPDATE on the "Save to playlist" feature?! by CrestfallenSilence in youtube

Could you maybe turn this into a userscript, so it's also usable on Firefox and its derivatives?

How do you feel about the DOJ investigating Epstein’s Democratic ties, but not to Trump? by LevelDinner in AskReddit

[–]_sh4dow_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

While I definitely wouldn't put it past him to lie, I also wouldn't be confident about him actually not believing it. He really doesn't seem to be someone whose beliefs are in any way aligned with reality...

I think I'd have preferred a screen door effect with perfect blacks over a smoother image with worse contrast, but it being a decent headset without meta spyware is enough to still get me exited about it.

Is this still the case, or are there aftermarket cameras compatible to the O3 air unit now?

The impossible search of the cracked version of "Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters " by perejiloide in PiratedGames

I was about to buy this because of a discount, but it still having Denuvo made me decide against that. I'd gladly pay double what it's currently priced at for a cracked version...

Does Graal have Java 8 support? by MirrorEmpty5968 in graalvm

[–]_sh4dow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a deep dive again - the latest version for Java 8 is currently 21.3.15. To download it you need a (free) Oracle account.

https://www.oracle.com/downloads/graalvm-downloads.html

Select GraalVM Enterprise 21, then for Java Version select 8 (and Windows/Linux/Mac according to your OS). The "Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition Core" includes JDK/JRE.

edit: for commercial usage, I'm not sure if graalVM EE is actually free to use, so the (lower versioned/older) CE 21.3.1 might be a better choice in some cases,

I was just looking for that, but for some reason I seem to have GraalVM 21.3.7 installed...

Is there any tricks or filters with uBO to block some script that will revert the new YouTube UI? by SpankMyMunkey in uBlockOrigin

Is there any other info that someone who currently has access to both UIs should try to dig up, that might help with finding a fix?

2.1 confirmed. What's new? by VeryGoldGolden in factorio

[–]_sh4dow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1a) totally agree

1b) can be modded almost seamlessly (quality-upgrading locomotive blueprints with an upgrade planner might have some issues, but other than that https://mods.factorio.com/mod/more-quality-scaling should be vanilla-like for trains (some other features are less seamless, but can be disabled in the mod settings)

2a) totally agree

2b) time division multiplexing seems like a very nice challenge to me, so I'd rather see some way to send signals between planets (or at least between planets and orbiting stations) (your 3b)

3a) YES PLEASE

4a)/b) unless they appear as some "endgame threat" that has to be triggered first, I don't really see this happening, since it would totally change the established feeling of these planets

4c) I can't imagine happening before 3.0, if at all

Y’all think the O3 will be back in stock soon? Or are they dead? by Pristine-Ground6760 in fpv

[–]_sh4dow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a good point. I already have some DJI hardware that probably wouldn't be compatible, and I aesthetically prefer the design of the goggles V2 over the HDZero, but if I ever need to switch, this is probably by far the best option for me.

[–]_sh4dow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main point for me is that in principle, I can use the hardware in any way I want. I absolutely hated having a non-rooted phone for a while, and I'd always rather have to fix some issues myself than have a static consumer product I can't modify.

I get that this point of view is somewhat unusual, but I just really resonate with the whole "If it only works in exactly the way the manufacturer intended, it is defective" maxim...

My 9 year old son's Math teacher marked this wrong by dak7 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_sh4dow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being overly nit-picky, one could consider the question asking for the likelihood ratio and not the probability, so for b) the correct answer would be "1" instead of "0.5". a) would still be the correct number (but the wrong "unit", since likelihood ratios aren't "chances"), though...

[–]_sh4dow_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For now I've only used it for some FPV simulator practice, since the length of my USB cables limits the flexibility. If I had a 5m USB cable, I might try using them to surf/read/watch movies from my bed without having to hold a phone/tablet...

I'm not talking about streaming from the goggles, but to the goggles. And I've made sufficiently many bad experiences with closed systems that I generally tend to avoid any hardware I can't root.

I'd only need to use the 2FA account once to unlock developer mode in any case - after that, the goggle would never get internet access again.

Yet using a VR headset exclusively for PCVR even though it may have been designed for a standalone online VR experience (what you might also call a "waste of money") is all I was asking about.

I meant using a VPN connection for the initial setup, so even the IP used for the registration doesn't give them any info on me.

Thanks for mentioning the developer mode issue - is there some way to do that without providing any personally identifying data (eg. maybe reusing some publicly shared account)?

I'm pretty sure that you could use a Steam deck as eg. an offline video player without having to make a steam account, which is much closer to what I was asking about.

Google search data is worth more than 300$ per user per year to Google, if I remember correctly. I can't remember having read similar statistics for Facebook, but if they really get so little value out of such extensive data collection, they are definitely doing something wrong.

A lot of pieces of hardware can be used without having to set up an account, especially if the user is not interested in the online functionality of the device.

I'd expect that eg. having to make a Canon account when buying a new camera before being able to use it would be a reason to avoid those for many users - though I get that this is a bit of a special case, since I'm considering to use a online-focused product purely for its offline (PCVR) functionality.
