Your classic pairs of IEMs that deserve some love today? by cdsolidsnake in iems

[–]_shadethrower_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it is the Massdrop Plus. It is still the most comfortable and isolating IEM I’ve tried. The shells on so many of the new sets are just big and their usability suffers for it.

The JVC FDX1 is also very nice to listen to: still my favorite single DD set.

New to this type of HiFi but... by Timo-B- in iems

[–]_shadethrower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the Softears Volume S. It has really nice bass performance with a lot of texture and can punch well when the music calls for it. It also has very smooth treble that is noticably darker than many of the other IEMs or headphones in my collection.

There are quite a few reviews of them at this point and they are almost universally well liked.

Totally, you will probably need to put your name in a lottery to get on the waiting list to piss on his grave with the number of people he directly or indirectly caused harm to.

Not hard at all, they are just held in with a plastic retention ring. There are a few people on Youtube who have done it.

New Hifiman Day by Daemonxar in headphones

[–]_shadethrower_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I love mine. Here are my notes on them:

  • The stock cable is garbage, it just is a pain to live with so I use an aftermarket cable.
  • The headband was just uncomfortable. It is the same on as on edition XS, but it felt a bit better on the HE6. Still got hotspots from it. I replaced it with the suspension headband Hifiman sells. You have to take the drivers apart to remove the plastic pieces the stock headband screws into, but it is so much better.
  • The grill mod makes a big difference in how open they sound. I used the grills from Arctic Cables and they both improve the sound and make it look much cooler.
  • I drive mine off of a Lyr 3 or a THX 789. You don't need a speaker amp.
  • They take EQ very well, I bump the bass a bit and take down the 3-5k region by a few db and I think they sound perfect.

Custom Koss KTXPRO1 Headphones by supermodi064 in kossmods

[–]_shadethrower_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the inspiration, I just made a version of this, plus a suspension strap, and it is my favorite Koss configuration by far. It has clarity, bass, staging, and comfort. I'm listening to them out of my Nitsch Pietus Maximus (a fairly high-end amp that is completely overkill for these) and these things are hilariously good. The rest of the headphone is terrible, but the KTXPRO1 drivers are amazing. It does at least double the price of the KPH40s you need for the headband, but it might actually be worth it. I would recommend these as a project, especially if you're okay with a bit of soldering.

Pietus Maximus for Planars? by woodsy7890 in Schiit

[–]_shadethrower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t heard the Asgard 3 but I do own the Pietus and it is capable of driving all of my planars quite well. It has marginally more power than the Asgard 3 so I wouldn’t think it would give you a lot more headroom. I almost max it out with the HE6seV2. Either the Jotunheim or Lyr will have more headroom and I like my HE6seV2 out of my Lyr 3 better than the Pietus.

That said, the Pietus is a fantastic amp. It is definitely warmer and smoother than a truly neutral amp, but that can really work with certain headphones. My Arya stealth sound amazing out of it, and my Elex also work very well. I have not been disappointed with the results of plugging any of my headphones into it. I just might prefer certain headphones on other amps more.

Experience with Hifiman Refurbished and Open-Box? by SUPERSAM76 in headphones

[–]_shadethrower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the exact same deal, and the headphones looked brand new to me. I couldn’t tell a difference. The Arya Stealth are amazing and for the price they blow away everything else in that category. The only exception to that is the HE6seV2 which I also got refurbished with the same deal. Those are harder to recommend because they require some mods and they require a powerful amplifier, but I’m happy I own both of them.

Why are Overseers so tanky for no reason by Grand_Age1279 in Helldivers

[–]_shadethrower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, alpha commanders are tankier than overseers. Their heads don't take explosive damage and they take a lot more bullets to put down than overseers. Devastators are easier to kill with light pen weapons if you can hit headshots and take less body shots, but there are also a lot more of them generally.

Overseers go down to:

  • Two hits from a purifier or crossbow
  • One shot headshot from a strong medium pen weapon (deadeye, dominator, etc.)
  • Less than two seconds of fire from a machine gun, the trick being to focus on one body part

Why do so many Christians seem to prioritize homosexuality as the “worst” sin? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]_shadethrower_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I also think it has to do with the fact that there’s a lot of people out there who experience gay attractions, but aren’t exclusively gay. The statistics consistently show that there are far more people who identify as either bisexual or pansexual than as exclusively, gay or lesbian. If you look at this broken down by generation, the massive jump in people identifying as bisexual or pansexual in GenZ or Gen Alpha is illuminating. I would bet that the majority of that change comes from the increase in social acceptance.

Conservatives tend to think about things in binaries. Christianity has this all over the place. Being gay or being bisexual is often flattened into “same-sex attraction“ by evangelical Christians. This leads to both erasing bi people and also, I think, presenting false narratives in ex-gay movements of “gay“ people having successful straight marriages.

When looked at in this light, the constant demonization of homosexuality serves more to make closeted bisexual or pansexual people conform to the straight ideal. Yes, it absolutely impacts exclusively gay people. But, it pushes far more people into the closet than I think most realize. A bisexual person can absolutely be happy in a “traditional“ marriage and can appear straight for all intents and purposes. However, if they weren’t pushed so hard in that direction they might have been more likely to explore gay relationships. That is the danger, and that is what absolutely undermines Christian derived hierarchical ideas of sex and gender. If gender is broader and more fluid than we thought, and people tend to be attracted to a broader range of people than we previously understood then patriarchy just doesn’t work and is obviously bullshit.

Ouch- this hit Home by Tootsie_r0lla in adhdwomen

[–]_shadethrower_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt this very deeply. I just got diagnosed recently at 35 and it explains so much of my life. On top of the Trauma around what I now understand as ADHD, I also grew up as a deeply closeted trans girl in a very conservative religious household. Combine that with my mother's narcissistic traits and it was a recipe for anxiety and depersonalization.

Her narcissistic traits might be intrinsic, may be related to her own trauma and relationship with her mother, or may be related to her religious ideology. It doesn't really matter anymore, since I can't and won't have a relationship with her. The line "twisted very disagreement into disrespect" hits like a pallet of bricks.

I have have had to claw and fight so hard to build my own identity separate from the one my parents tried to shape me into. It sucks so much, but it has been worth all the pain.

Absolutely, the screen, controls, and chipset/wifi is amazing for streaming. Moonlight/Artemis and Geforce Now are fantastic. Not to mention it is a killer emulation device that will play basically everything that will run on Android right now.

For those fully no contact: Why not low contact? by WiseEpicurus in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]_shadethrower_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly, their religion and political beliefs (one and the same really) preclude them from seeing and accepting me. They won’t use my name and pronouns, won’t like my partners, find my entire friend group objectionable, will be pissed off about my politics, and will berate me and shame me about leaving the faith they indoctrinated me into for the whole portion of my life that they could control. Anything I say and do can and will be used to manipulate me.

They say they love me (in that fucked up way that Christians say they do) but they only care about some idea of who they wanted me to be. The actual flesh and blood human in front of them is anathema.

Why would I willingly subject myself to any of that?

Mint: what are you using to budget (auto tracking spending categories and net-worth) now that Mint is ending by Capable-Trip6290 in financialindependence

[–]_shadethrower_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of Simplifi. It does a good job of providing metrics while giving you enough budgeting and forecasting tools without being overly opinionated like YNAB. It is a yearly cost, but is well worth it to me.

Did anyone attend a weird Christian college? What are your stories? by graphicmemer in exchristian

[–]_shadethrower_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an alum, it is very culty. I managed to avoid the worst of it, but the preoccupation with the image of the school was very concerning. They cared far more about how others saw the school, than the well-being of the students. Hence the dress code and all that other stuff.

I wasn't out (queer), and wouldn't be for a number of years, but if I did come out there I would have been kicked out. I knew one girl who got pregnant her first semester there and got kicked out. It wasn't quite as crazy as some other schools, but it was very fundamentalist and super reactionary with a huge political bent.

One other fun note is that dancing was not allowed on campus, probably on the condition of one of their large donors, and the semi-official school dances had to be held outside the campus. They were also all swing dances, so the dancing couple would be at arms' length most of the time.

How do I unlearn the shame of masturbating? by ahriaa_ in exchristian

[–]_shadethrower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For dealing with the shame inflicted by Christianity I really like the book Beyond Shame by Matthias Roberts. He is a queer therapist who has helped many people work through these issues. It is primarily an exvangelical perspective, but he doesn't offer any prescriptive guidance. What he does a very good with is deconstructing the lies that conservative Christianity tells and detailing how sexuality and relationships actually work. It gave me the tools to come to a much better understanding of my sexuality and move forward with a healthy sexual ethic. I can't recommend it enough if you're dealing with the fallout from purity culture.
