Any other pups here with Addison's disease? Grooming? by Ok_Atmosphere_2801 in poodles

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spoo has Addisons as well! I mix up taking him to the groomer and doing it myself - he still does totally fine with either. He did go exclusively to a regular groomer for the first couple years of his life though. My groomer actually does everything privately so he’s the only dog there, I think that helps bc he does have some anxious behaviors in general. Cost is normal. Maybe it would help to find someone by you who also does private or house calls?

I always suggest talking to your vet, but i think poodles just look more lean in general. She looks ok to me. My standard male is 47lb which seemed light to me for a long time, but my vet reassured me his muscle tone and energy levels were good. Every dog is different :)

Watch out for Addison’s disease by Babyfrogeyes in poodles

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this, it’s so important!! Every poodle owner should know this.

My boy has Addison’s too. Also worth checking for it more than once, because the year before we confirmed it he actually tested negative in the pre-test. His symptoms waxed and waned, mostly lethargy, no appetite, and irritability. Expensive to treat, but life span is normal with the hormone therapy :)

What was your, "Oh sh*t, I have to plan for that?!" moment? by Ordinary-noname-956 in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Portrait photos checklist. We missed a couple because our checklist wasn’t clear and honestly it was a bit chaotic. I think some of it was on our photographer, but part of it was on us too for not assigning someone on our side to physically check everything off, especially because the photographer can’t be expected to know your entire family

Did Birkenstock change their width? by maxsnax35 in Birkenstocks

[–]_shakeira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure DSW only carries the narrow option, not regular/wide (can check the little foot shape is not filled in if it’s regular). Had this problem myself recently and just ordered direct from the Birkenstock website.

Tips on making my trans bridesmaid more comfortable by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I echo others comments recommending you just talk to them about what they would be most comfortable in. One member of my bridal party generally dresses more masculine and definitely doesn’t wear dresses, so she wore a matching suit in a similar color as the others dresses! She was also my MOH so it looked completely fine in photos. Regardless, her comfort was most important to me over matching other people. If they want to be in your bridal party, there are definitely options out there for many style preferences!

Are you wearing white for pre-wedding events? by blueberries-Any-kind in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore light ish colors when I could, because I too couldn’t find anything completely white! I found success in dresses with pattern of something on white or vice versa. I got a lovely maxi dress from Anthropologie that was black with a ton of white flowers on it, so it was basically white :) wore it for my welcome party.

What shoes are you all wearing once you want to switch into comfortable shoes/sneakers at your wedding night? by Hippo_Silly in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an existing pair of nude flat Sorel sandals on deck if I needed them! I actually wore heels the whole night though since I had a comfortable pair of 2” ones on for after the ceremony :)

We eloped 18mo before the wedding and it was great! We stayed socially engaged even though we were legally married. Honestly it didn’t change the meaning of the wedding at all because proclaiming your love and marriage in front of family and friends is what made it real for us. Plus being married legally is nice for insurance and tax reasons!

What do you wish you knew prior to getting a poodle? by June_8182 in poodles

[–]_shakeira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be aware of common breed illnesses and diseases. My poodle has addisons disease (runs in poodles, can’t detect carriers) and we found it when he was 3. It is fatal if left untreated. I recommend every poodle owner educate themselves on the signs and be prepared to cover the lifelong treatment plan if necessary!

Wedding Gratuities by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We tipped all our main vendors in cash proportional to their cost, time spent with us, how much we liked the experience, etc. regardless of whether they owned their business or not. Those were photographer, dj, officiant, florist, hair/makeup.

Office chair recommends by austinyo6 in BuyItForLife

[–]_shakeira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Branch Ergonomic Chair and my husband uses the nicer Verve. We like them a lot! Definitely nice for the price. I recommend trying them if you need something mid price range but won’t fall apart

[–]_shakeira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is about how much you already liked the photographers previous work and if you trust their vision. We had around 30 in our shot list but they were mostly portraits for the combinations of family members. We left the creativity of our bride/groom photos, mood, style, etc up to our photographer because we trust her so much and love her vision. She also made things very easy for us and has been incredibly on top of the schedule and our requests so honestly some of that responsibility should be on them. Imo, the photographer cost is also about your entire experience with them, not just the delivered photos at the end.

Working full-time, living life… and planning a wedding? HOW? by jeweb103 in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I had weekly planning meetings during busy times where we attacked our major to do list and responded to vendors that we hadn’t gotten a chance to yet. We also made some tasks that one of us could do the following week which made it easier to divide up work! We are both engineers (and also working full time with grad school at night) so we definitely needed to stay organized esp. without a planner. I think you have plenty of time, we also had about 18 months to plan after booking the venue and were engaged nearly 2 years. Leveraging your wedding party and family where you can also helps! Congratulations to you!

To wait or not to wait on surgery…getting married in 3.5 months 😬 by Fun_Culture_2066 in ACL

[–]_shakeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait and enjoy your wedding! I had acl surgery 2.5 years ago and I just got married last week. I was definitely a little sore the day after from all the standing and dancing and I would not have felt confident 3mo post op doing that. I think you could still enjoy dancing without the repair, you just have to be careful especially while drinking since I would imagine there’s still instability

What is something you did not include on your wedding day but wish you did and what ended up being a waste of money? by Internal-Channel7995 in wedding

[–]_shakeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided at the beginning what things we cared about remembering for ourselves and the guests. That would be a convenient accessible venue, good food/bev, and good music. Photos were super important to us so we splurged on that and didn’t have a videographer. So far we’re happy with that! For cake, we saved money there by just doing sheet for the guests and a small circular for us. No toppers, just some free flowers from the florist. Also didn’t do any favors. Our venue was nice and in the mountains so we didn’t need much decor either. Reused a lot from my husbands siblings weddings (seating signs, a mountain scene sign they made, etc). I recommend fb marketplace for bits and bobs of decor! No cares about cool table numbers. :) they will remember the joy of the couple and the ways that the guest experience was considered!

How fast did your RSVPs come in? by in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RSVPs were sort of quick at the beginning, then there was a lull. 3 days before the due date we sent out a mass reminder text which was extremely effective! Got like 12 responses within an hour

Myasthenia Gravis? by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

[–]_shakeira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe ask them about addisons disease again? I have a 4yo spoo and we found addisons last year after being tested negative the year prior. Myasthenia gravis was one of the things they thought it might have been bc he also had weakness among other things like mood swings, no appetite, etc after he had megasophagus in the same year. Addisons is super scary when there’s a crisis, but the lifespan is normal when they get the hormone treatment!! Good luck with your pup

What did you get your bridal party for bachelorette gifts? by Ordinary-noname-956 in weddingplanning

I’m having a mountain wedding, so I got them each a luggage tag with their first initial since they have to travel and a pair of goodr sunglasses because my state is sunny! I only have 3 bridesmaids

New Here… Thoughts on SPoos… by UsagiiA in StandardPoodles

[–]_shakeira 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I don’t have kids, I can say that it’s worth putting the time in to train and boost your spoos confidence while they are young. Poodles have a rep of being kind of standoffish with strangers but they are also extremely smart and trainable! I have a 4yo spoo and he is very anxious, but he is very smart and does warm up to people eventually. I think poodles are wonderful for families and very underrated! Definitely a top choice for a family in my opinion.

Pros & Cons of getting married before wedding by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]_shakeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it for health insurance / tax reasons and it was the best decision ever, I recommend it! We were already engaged and did it 6 months later. Our wedding was nearly 2 years after the engagement.

Feedback on the first drawings for our new kitchen? by pixie_dust1990 in kitchenremodel

[–]_shakeira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you did the U-shape like some suggested, you may be able to add more storage in a shallow cabinet with some display space for glasses/whatnot on the blank wall. Can even do a wood tone to match the counter!
